i am late for work because i was lusting after spacious west coast apartments, with views.

i moved into a new office for job today

it has fire alarm system, sprinklers, working mail chutes, heat, air conditioning, and janitors. all these things the old bldg didn’t have can u believe it

place i worked at last year didn’t have hot water! dressing rooms with showers, but no hot water lol

oh yeah it only had one type of water at a time: either hot or cold but you couldn’t really choose

also the elevators were so slow i quit using them, and during the fire today the news says one got stuck on the 7th floor

yay i found apartment (not officially but sort of). Moving Day is fast approaching!!!

finding apt was so annoying. you have to reload craigslist all day basically and jump on things in the first 10 min. in my experience. i am subletting until aug 15 bc i didn’t wanna do a year without seeing it, also don’t know how much money i’ll have in 3 months. could be a lot, could be none!

also it’s hard to find a job when you’re not there. experience teaches me that hiring parties generally think out of towners are too much work. i might line up temp legal stuff just as security, though.

hey harbs i was jk about baltimore sucking. i have no idea. i’ve spent all of three days there, as a tourist. i think it might be kind of an interesting place. i have no idea. urban exploration? lots of brick? heart of the east coast? hey a city’s got john waters and matmos and amon repping for it, it can’t be bad, right? great ballpark there. massive abandoned factories. birthplace of babe ruth. i’m into it.

i was there for like 12 weeks last summer and i found it didn’t suck or not suck, it’s just a place to live. i liked my job ok and people in the office didn’t seem miserable or overworked. i don’t wanna live somewhere really cold anymore (e.g. where i grew up) or in the south (too hot and southern). also relatively cheap. and i think i am just a permanent east coaster. the midwest bothers me. it is really windy and people are weird and kind of annoying. anyway i’m not looking for some place people idealize like portland or something. i just wanna live somewhere average. like sort of good but sort of bad!

i don’t care if you say it sucks anyway. i was just wondering because it seems like a place you would like.

i also considered milwaukee and philadelphia but eh. milwaukee is like a much colder version of cbus, which i am not that excited about to begin with. philadelphia the office i was looking at is not hiring any recent grads this year because of $$$. oh well! also i had an interview for prestigious nyc job and was sort of relieved when they didn’t like me :)

hahaha i have the same problem. two boxes with clothes in them have been sitting in my room forever. i’ve been writing on my list “unpack boxes” since august. last night i finally opened one because i needed my jacket. so maybe i’ll unpack them this weekend.

i wore a dress to work the other day that i discovered after i unpacked the box that has been doing duty as my bedside table and people were like ‘ooh new clothes?’ ‘uh no actually it’s like 3 years old i just forgot i had it lol’

I get the same way, I think I miss Indiana/Arizona but then I go back there and nope that is not it. I miss the folks and the good times had with them, but not the place. It is more heartsick than homesick I think.

lots of tax deductions available if you move more than 200 miles for a job! Boxes, temporary storage, hotels, moving van rental, etc. Have done this twice—it was worth researching and keeping receipts. Deductible even if you don’t itemize iirc.

btw, you know our Mad Men watching friend MM has done this back-n-forth bicoastal move stuff a lot! (SEA-NYC-SEA-NYC in 4 yrs! and moving back to SEA in another year probably!) He shipped/mailed most of his stuff last time.

i did that when i came out but i am really attached to my bed and figured that trying to sell it and the couch and then re-buy back east would not be v lucrative as opposed to just shipping everything in relocube, which is only a few hundred more than it cost me to ship everything in june!

yeah, when my son moved to FL, he compared renting truck/driving vs. moving company vs. door-to-door moving (pod things)—he squeezed all his stuff into one pod and didn’t cost much at all.

reading moving company reviews had me so terrified that even though some quoted lower prices than the pod i just feel a little more at ease with the pod situation.

uhaul is not expensive but by the time you add gas + hotels it would be a lot... but man, a cross-country trip would be so awesome! i am considering taking the train for 42 hours instead. montana! and you can check 3 bags free (as opposed to planes, where you have to pay).
