i took the train from dc back to boston with 3 other guys i used to work with. my boss was afraid to fly so instead of a 90 minute flight it was a 13 hour train ride. we left at around 8 pm and had the bar car to ourselves the entire night. we tipped well and they let us drink until 3 a.m. when we had a lay over in penn station. we ran out and grabbed a couple of pints during our wait then went back and passed out in the sleeper cars.

it was actually a fun trip.

best time ever on a train: overnight from Malaga to Barcelona, me and buddy get bored and go to cafe car. End up drinking ALL THE BEER with three Scotch dudes. At one point, one of them disappears into the night at a whistle stop, returns 20 seconds before the train leaves with another case because the cafe was (a) closed and (b) out of beer.

this is the point of overnight train journeys. I miss runs down to Naples from Turin, with big jugs of wine and ham bread and cheese to go with it.

have any of you dc’ers rode the accela? when i went to nyc & boston a few months ago i was going to take the accela from ny to boston then fly home from logan but it turns out the train was like $120 more expensive than an american airlines flight from lga to bos.

I rode the Acela many moons ago, when it was apparently less ridiculously expensive than it is now. I liked it a lot.

the acela ticket cost only $20 more than the regular train, last night. i don’t think acela has raised its prices recently at all, but the rest of the ne corridor trains have basically doubled or more in price.

I’ve taken Amtrak NYC to Grand Rapids and it took like THIRTY-SIX HOURS which is RETARDED but I had a Pullman cabin to myself and nowhere else to be so it was kind of an adventure until we were stopped for hours waiting for freight traffic in Ohio somewhere. Except being alone was kind of a drag.

they just took delivery of those locomotives when i was still living back east but because of the condition/quality/age of the track it couldn’t run at the higher speeds between boston and nyc.

I used to love taking Amtrak home to Buffalo for the summer from Providence in college, even though it took forever. gave me meditative time to prepare for shifting from college life to home life.

oh it was fine, actually, because yeah i was with friends and bikes and wine. but it still wasn’t a mode of transportation to take seriously you know?
