OMG POLAR BEAR PAINTINGS IN JIM ROBINSON’s OFFICE!!1!!!!
watch that scene again. as soon as Des looks away from the painting, it is GONE. unsure whether this intentional or just a horizontal flip of the film for some reason, but it disappears as soon as it cuts to the next shot.
people be trippin’ on those paintings over at the fuselage because they look like the painting claire’s boyfriend made, years later
napkins instead of beermats
what is a beermat?
Okay, a coaster. I wikied it.
Some beermats are collectible items. Tegestology is a latin term defined as the practice of collecting beermats or coasters, with practitioners known as tegestologists Collecting beermats is an especially popular hobby in Germany. There is an international collector’s association called IBV in Germany since 1958. The British Beermat Collectors Society was founded shortly afterwards in 1960 and currently has around 300 members spread around the world. Like the IBV, it organizes regular meetings for collectors and also publishes a monthly newsletter. Other notable clubs associated with tegestology include the South Australian Coaster Collectors Club and New South Wales Coaster Collectors Club. There are many subcategories of tegestologists, including those who are solely interested in porcelain or other specific kinds of beermats.
The London bits were much more convincing than the portrayal of Brixton in one of Charlie’s flashbacks, which was hilariously bad.
I think Charlie is going to die, but we’ll spend the whole season waiting for it to happen.
Also, am I the only one who finds Claire’s story really interesting? There’s still that whole thing about the baby being special—and I’m assuming the psychic dude in the first series was experiencing the same phenomenon as Desmond?
Hurley appears to have got over his girlfriend dying like way quickly. Isn’t it about three or four days?
Anyone else find the whole “Mr. Eko is dead, the island killed him” really unsatisfying and annoying since it was never alluded to again in this episode?
The London bits were much more convincing than the portrayal of Brixton in one of Charlie’s flashbacks, which was hilariously bad.
surely just equally bad.
perhaps Charlie will accept his fate and go on a kamikaze mission to rescue Jack/some other herculean task to benefit everyone else.
claire’s *story* is really interesting but i don’t think it’s come up since the first series!
she’s jack’s sister you buttheads
I like her new fringe.
yes, she looks really great in this last episode...
perhaps Charlie will accept his fate and go on a kamikaze mission to rescue Jack/some other herculean task to benefit everyone else.
That would be pretty great. Though I suppose it would take some more convincin by way of near-misses that Desmond saves him from. And then maybe the mission would serve a redemptive function and he would survive. Though he already very flagrantly cheated death one time (the hanging episode).
good point, he’s already been dead (they never touched on whether he had any kind of NDE) once.
things that have not yet been mentioned/people who have not yet appeared this season:
- the two kids (and why they were out in the jungle with ‘Others’ bare-feet)
- rose and bernard
- rousseau
- michael and walt
also am i bein insane but is alex really the daughter of benryman and rousseau?
i don’t think so/think that would be stupid
but can’t rule anything out
I think she’s DEFINITELY Rousseau’s daughter but don’t know whether Benry is her real dad or just her adoptive dad.
xpost
oh now i remember what i was going to say last week: rousseau *captured* ben. so either: no they’ve never met or: he raised alex ‘as a father or: it was an inside job, rousseau helped benry get inside the losties’ camp.
i need to watch the episode where the phoney psychic comes clean again.
Anyone else find the whole “Mr. Eko is dead, the island killed him” really unsatisfying and annoying since it was never alluded to again in this episode?
Yeah I was thinking about that too. I think focusing heavily on the flashback/dream/whatever took away a lot from what’s going on on the Island at that moment. I mean, we really need to know what happens with Locke and looking north and I suspect by the time THAT episode rolls around, we’ve already forgotten why we should care.
I was just reading someone’s complaint that at least part of why LOST is losing steam now is because there’s too many personal subplots, whereas in the first season, everything that happened on the Island almost always involved the entire ensemble cast. It’s really hard to follow what’s going on with one group (Losties) when there’s something else happening with another group (Kate/Sawyer) and yet another happening at the same time (Jack).
i think the rigidity of the format (ie the one character, one flashback) thing makes it really difficult for them to handle simultaneous action, which is kind of annoying. i suppose the last episode only sovered a few hours of island time, but those hours were probably covered on the prison island in episode six. i think they either need to kill a bunch of people or figure out how not to ignore them so much of the time.
sounds like the ratings are slumping enough for them to probably try and wrap it up either this series or next woot
perhaps Charlie is ‘next’ because as with Ana-Lucia and Eko he has killed an Other (as have Sun, Sawyer and now Juliet—possible clues as to who will cop it further on in the series)
i doubt charlie will die really. it would be a bit straightforward.
perhaps the spirit of rock n’ roll will perish within him.
Yeah I sort of wish they’d mix up the Others Island stuff with the beach/ensemble scenes in each episode a bit more. Either that or have Locke, Sayid and Jin go in there and kick arse and get Jack back asap.
unfortunately Island Momus now has a name (SPOILERS DUH)
it’s a bit like in ‘final destination’ where all the characters are named things like ‘alfred hitchcock’.
i am so psyched for Flame exploration
been thinking over s03 and why i’m not quite feeling it enough yet and it comes down to: MORE SAYID PLZ, i think.
wash your mouth out. the fuck it has.
— temporary enrique (miltonpinsk...), December 21st, 2006 2:46 PM.
but my frustration with the show was largely because i knew there’d be a big gap after the first 6. now it promises to be every week until the end i’m pretty happy with things.
hmm. i was off my medication.
that or: i kind of knew the six wouldn’t work, even though there were some great bits, but these last two haven’t done it for me either. maybe they should have made the six *entirely* about jack kate and sawyer on the other island and not bodged the other stuff. thus ep 7 could have started with more of a bang. getting them *off* the island is/was a big chore.
yeah like what they did with the tailies. but that would have risked alienating the section of the fanbase who aren’t Jack/Kate/Sawyer fans.
Ben can’t be Rousseau’s husband, because he has been on the island his whole life, whereas Rousseau & fam & crew crashed there 16 years ago (I feel like I should specify “16 island years”.
only if you believe ben and rousseau! also he could have got rousseau preggers even if they are both telling the truth there. or juliet’s magic drug maybe created her...
danielle was already pregnant with alex when she got shipwrecked right?
SO SHE SAYS.
but yes.
err juliet’s magic drug wasn’t created in 1988.

How to Fix It
For characters: Kill Jack. Kill Kate. Kill Nicki and Paolo (or whatever) and never, ever, ever make such a grade school attempt to introduce new characters again. Make Charlie interesting again instead of the whiny, jealous infant he became. Don’t screw up Desmond. Cripple Locke and bring back his mystic bent. Let Sayid loose. More Sun & Jin. Make Sawyer say something besides “offensive attention-getter, unimaginative nickname. Sarcastic comment and/or question.” Oh, and maybe explain where Danielle is after all this time.
Let Sayid loose.
Most truest of all.
Charlie was never interesting.
Benry flashback is urgent and key (either tie-in with Rousseau/Alex or do separate ones for them also).
More Sayid. I’ve been saying it since, er, there stopped being so much Sayid.
I think they said somewhere the season would end with a Ben flashback.
i think the losties and others may kind of join each other in some way, at least by the end of the show.
I’m still pissed that Sayid’s “Keep two, kill the rest” thing didn’t come off.
are they going to give fuckface Pickett the same kind of funeral they gave his wife? how will Juliet explain his death to Tom, Ben and co? it’s hard to imagine any of them giving a shit about him really.
NRQ OTM. Eyepatchy dude + smokey monster (also possibly + barefooted kind posse [may still be other Others!]) may turn out to be shared enemies. Or maybe Jack + Ben + Juliet + Tom get kicked out of Othersville for their shenanigens.
barefooted KID posse
More Sayid. I’ve been saying it since, er, there stopped being so much Sayid.
I would love a show with Sayid just taking out Others Rambo-stylee. He can get rid of Charlie as well.
There’s lots of reasons to miss Sayid, not just for his badassery: 1. he’s this show’s Professor, I miss him building radios out of coconut leaves and Hurley’s butt-sweat, 2. of all the man-candy on the island, he is the Great Romantic, 3. Sawyer saved all his best nicknames (Cpt. Falafel) and zingers for Sayid.
i had forgotten that he and hurley built a radio and heard the past. harumph.
‘the wire’ has ridiculously elongated stories, but it does at least touch base with minor characters from time to time.
Sayid had the best man-on-man friendships too (Sayid + Hurley, Sayid + Charlie esp), besides Sawyer and Jack (what a shame having 6 episodes starring both almost exclusively and no Jawyer/Sack time!!).
Did anyone check out the Polar Bear Mural thing?
One painting, in a style reminiscent of the mural Desmond painted on the Swan’s wall on the Island, has polar bears, an inverted Buddha, mountain peaks, and the word Namaste on it. It and the third painting are on the wall opposite of the bar. Many viewers initially thought that the Namaste was written backwards. In the actual filming and the majority of the scene, the painting appears to Desmond’s left, with Namaste written correctly. In initial shots the film was reversed, causing the painting to appear on Desmond’s right with Namaste written backwards. It is unknown if this was intentional or not.
In the orientation films they say “Thank you, namaste, and good luck”—namaste is a Hindi salutation.
There have been a lot of paintings of a similar style in LOST (Hatch wall mural, this one, Claire’s babydaddy’s paintings, etc)—I think this is because they were all painted by director Jack Bender.
Jack Bender
big clue here
hahahahaha
oh now i remember what i was going to say last week: rousseau *captured* ben. so either: no they’ve never met or: he raised alex ‘as a father or: it was an inside job, rousseau helped benry get inside the losties’ camp.
yeah but IRL we know that this whole scenerio was written, shot, and aired with the intention of benry being a minor character.
my co-workers have just discovered ‘heroes’ and are saying it’s better than ‘lost’. this in itself, without me having even to watch ‘heroes’, had reminded me to be stauch.
Yeah, there’s a little groundswell re: Heroes being the new Lost because it comes fast & furious w/ the twists AND puts out, instead of waiting for the right time to make w/ the revelations.
They are both teh awesome.
LOST has the brainz, Heroes brings teh ham. But I would take Lost over Heroes any day.
I haven’t even seen Heroes, I’m just being a goof.
They are definitely of an ilk, and I think Heroes may be more instantaneously gratifying to watch. But I’ve yet to have Heroes dreams, whereas, in sleep, I can’t excape teh JACK FACE.
no, i watched heroes all weekend, it’s much more satisfying
characters don’t hold back figuring out things, or walk past relevant clues to the shows mysteries without noticing them
same themes, time/fate, etc, much less frustrating
if all the characters in lost just sat down and had a long conversation about everything, they could figure it all out
this happens in heroes
But LOST viewers haven’t figured it out, how could the characters?
certainly not the viewers fault
i watch heroes and i detect a new plot line, immediately i get all defensive like i’m watching lost and i’ll never figure out what’s going on for like another six episodes or a whole season—
but they don’t stretch it out like that
I’m sick of people saying Heroes is better. What, do you want me to watch TV all the time?
OH NO
jaymc otm. i ph34r heroes for that reason.
kind of hesitant to stroll into the heroes threads and start posting though, this is my home
(heroes is better)
I watch TV all the time. :(
I’m also a Grey’s Anatomy addict which is incredibly sad.
‘heroes’ won’t be on normal tv in the uk for a while and i can’t be arsed to torrent it; but might watch it now.
there’s nothing reprehensible about keeping up with your serialized dramas
What Cutty said.
Roz, from one (US?) GA fannie to another—was the 2nd part of that OMG MEREDITH FELL IN THE RIVER thing broadcast last week? I thought they rebroadcast Thursday’s show on Friday (because ABC knows how to butter their bread), but instead I got a rerun of the 2-parter where the Friday Night Lights guy gets blowed the fuck up by a homemade bazooka shell.
Desmond = Isaac—Charlie
Daddy Chandra Suresh = Dr Marvin Candle x Christian Shephard
DL & Micah = Michael & Walt
cutty manages to keep up with 2nd tier UK comedy too — give the man kudos.
David, I’m not in the US but I’m guessing you mean what happened after she fell in the river, and whether Izzy kills the guy on the boat?
Yeah it was—at least, I dled it last Friday.
was the 2nd part of that OMG MEREDITH FELL IN THE RIVER thing broadcast last week?
It was...on Thursday night. They usually rerun the newest ep on Fridays but not this past week for some reason. Oh okay I am busted as also a GA fan.
xpost
I kind of hope they kill Nikki and then Linderman takes Micah so DL can be all “they took him...right out of my [phase shifting] hands!”.
Those sumbitches. (ABC, that is.)
Nick, if it makes you feel any better, GA employes a comic booky guy on their production / writing staff, just like Heroes & Lost.
Anyway LOST; I think the past two episodes, if not the structure of the season (the first 6 were really strong, but the 3 month gap was just too much), has really lost (lol) a lot of LOST’s steam, but I think over the next few episodes—as they get back to loser island with Sayid and Locke who are obviously about to go on wicked awesome island exploration adventure—the satisfaction factor will leap.
consider walt—
we know he is “special”
we know he has some “power”
we know he was put into a “room”
when was the last time we heard anything about him?
It wasn’t A room, it was THE room.
I’m thinking it was the BRANEWASH room, but I expect that’s what they want us to think, and it was in fact some completely different room we still haven’t seen.
Good old L O S T.
consider brother mouzone in ‘the wire’ though!
it’s the same thing (if you want it to be).
and iirc, no mention of Walt since S2 finale, to answer yr Q.
The others also got “more than they bargained for” when Walt joined them.
naw, you knew mouzone was coming back, that’s all you needed to know
how is the wire received in the uk? do you have subtitles?
The Wire... well, that’s the one show that I have vowed not to start watching. Yet. For hard drive considerations.
I only watch L O S T.
Only 2 more episodes before a Sayid-centric ep. Can’t freaking wait.
how is the wire received in the uk? do you have subtitles?
— this is cutty (holle...), February 20th, 2007.
no-one gets the one tv station that shows it (fx); i would say it only just ‘broke’ in the media with the dvd of s03 a week or two ago. every critic says it’s the best thing ever etc but it’s still practically art-house cinema, audience-wise.
Heroes is dealing with a similar number of characters and same-size scope right?
I’ve been avoiding it but will probably plough in soon (ditto Balactica—oh daers). also pending are The Wire, 24 from 4th season on and the entirety of Mahabharat.
This week has seemed longer than the 3 month break.
