RIP MATSUZAKA(‘s 2007 Bosox career)?
the well-placed source blamed Boras for stubbornly being unable to get over the flaws in the Japanese posting system, saying that he has been unwilling to negotiate and that he has acted disinterested in even making a deal.
this is gonna happen at the last minute though, right?

It Really is this Simple, Right?

1. The Red Sox bid $51.1 million for the rights to negotiate with Daisuke Matsuzaka, with the expectation that a significant fraction of that $51.1 million would be netted back to them in the form of kickbacks or other compensation from Seibu.
2. The amount of the posting fee was just a little bit too conspicuous, and Major League Baseball made clear, both publicly and privately, that they were going to put the kibosh on any such compensation.
3. The Red Sox are not really that interested in paying a real $51.1 million for Matsuzaka, plus whatever salary they’ll pay on top of it, and never really were.
4. The Red Sox, therefore, effectively priced Matsuzaka out of the major leagues in 2007.
Now, Matsuzaka might still sign in Boston, but there’s a real chance that he’s been a non-entity to them for as long as two weeks, when the commissioner’s office made its “no side deals” declaration. If the Red Sox thought that $51 million meant $25 million, or $30 million, and it really does honest-to-goodness mean $51 million, then there’s really nothing that Scott Boras can or cannot do to get his client to Boston. Boras is a less important part of this process than people are making him out to be.
Rather, what I suspect is going on is that the Red Sox are trying to determine whether Matsuzaka really is worth a real $51 million after all, in consideration of the continued inflation in the market, the Yankees‘ signing of Andy Pettitte, and perhaps the public relations cost of failing to reel in Matsuzaka at this stage.
Some fun names on Matsuzaka’s PECOTA comparables list, by the way: Kevin Appier, Luis Tiant, and Darren Dreifort.

I still think it’s gonna happen. The way the market is now, even if he turns out to be a merely league-average starter, the going rate is at least 10mil per year...going up to 12 or 13 (which is better than halfway between the sox’s apparent 7–8mil offer and Boras’s 15mil demand) seems rather reasonable (I know, I know, plus 51.1).
UNLESS, they’re working on Clemens RIGHT NOW as their fall-back.

The free agent market may be out of control, but I can’t really accept the notion of DM earning less than Gil Meche.

6yrs/$52m is a fucking steal even with the $51.1 to Seibu.
I don’t know about a ‘steal’, but it’s certainly a LOT more easy to live with than the ridiculous numbers the ass-clowns in the press have been throwing around for weeks.

Plane has landed

BEDFORD, Mass. — The plane carrying Daisuke Matsuzaka, Scott Boras, and the Red Sox contingent has landed at Hanscom Air Force base.
Tom Werner, Scott Boras, Theo Epstein, Larry Lucchino, and Daisuke Matsuzaka were all seen leaving the plane and getting into trucks.
The caravan is going by police escort to Mass. General Hospital, presumably for Matsuzaka’s physical, which is required before any deal is finalized.
What if he’s no better than, say, Josh Beckett? Doesn’t this press seem a bit ridiculous?
What if he’s no worse than KING Felix or Dontrelle? Will he get an SI cover? Enquiring minds want to know... *I* want to know!

OTOH, they basically signed the guy for $103M over six years, which is less than what the Dodgers gave to Kevin Brown eight years ago. It’s approximately what Barry Zito is worth in this market, and DM could be a better than Zito over the next six years.

Yeah, but because of crazy luxury tax rules and the ability to market in Japanese half of that $103M isn’t even “real” money and it might even be recoupable (which you can’t say about the $100M that Zito is going to get.)

I have no idea what the solution/replacement is, but the Red Sox completely broke it (the bid-winning team is in such a ridiculous position of strength that the agent/player has no choice but to sign for whatever draconian amount is offered.)

I mean no one, no where honestly thinks that this guy is worth less over the next six years than Adam Eaton, Ted Lilly, Vincent Padilla, et all (and Matsuzaka is younger than all those guys) yet somehow he’s going to be making significant less than any of them is.
Devil’s advocate:
Matsuzaka is making much more than King Felix, Dontrelle, Brandon Webb, etc. and he’s making about the same as Johan Santana.
So why should he be making much more than those guys?
1) All those guys are younger than him (I think.)
2) They will be free agents in less than SIX YEARS and able to negotiate much more lucrative contracts than the one he just signed.
3) They are eligible for arbitration in the interim and/or able to sign lucrative contracts through their arb years.
All that said, I won’t argue that the system isn’t screwing those guys too.
DM is on the market now. If Johan, Webb, Dontrelle, Felix, and Boof were all on the market now, they’d be getting ARod $$.
