Pretty sure I’ve included everything major... no 7“ or CD singles.
What’s yr favorite?
my top 3:
1; GGD
2; Zomby full-length
3; Atlas Sound
obviously This Mortal Coil box set is a beauty but i haven’t heard it (read: can’t afford it)... gotta be good though!
atlas sound.
bon iver is on jagjag dogg
gang gang dance record is literally the only thing in this list that doesn’t trigger my gag reflex
i really liked the twin shadow single they released not sure why it doesnt count? i guess its not a ‘record’ ok
of these ive only heard zomby and inc. and i guess id vote for inc.
joker is ok in spots too i guess
ilxor
bon iver is on jagjag dogg
4ad presumably released it in uk/europe?
Gang Gang Dance: Eye Contact—excellent! haven’t gone back to it recently, don’t think it has quite as high peaks as st dymphna, still a vg album though
Zomby: Nothing [EP]—better than the album, enjoyable but not something i’d rave about
Zomby: Dedication—a few good ideas, mostly sounds unfinished
Joker: The Vision—i was hoping to like this after seeing lots of “ew too many pop/r&b vocals!” reactions but really it was very weak, the problem wasn’t that it was too pop but he has v little idea of how to make vocals fit on top of his beats
St. Vincent: Strange Mercy—i really couldn’t get into this and i did try! it just sounds like a mess and her songwriting isn’t strong enough to compensate
tUnE-yArDs: w h o k i l l—ha, talking of total messes. for some reason i was expecting to like this but i found it completely unlistenable, and the lyrics are pretty dubious too
Bon Iver: Bon Iver—reprehensible in every way, also FUCKING BORING. needs 2 die
i haven’t heard the others. maybe i should get into throwing muses at some point? i have been meaning to for about 15 years, after all.
oh apparently i have heard the inc ep? it’s in my itunes and it says i’ve played it once. literally no recollection of it at all
i really liked the twin shadow single they released not sure why it doesnt count?
just didn’t feel like cluttering the poll with 20+ singles etc.
This is kind of between St Vincent and Gang Gang Dance for me, both of which were v v strong, but the deciding factor is that the new St Vincent album is actually even better than the last one, while the GGD one is just ever so slightly not as good.
I’m not gonna be an Old Skool 4AD fan and kmt at some of the releases—4AD were always kind hit and miss, that when they failed they failed spectacularly, which is always more interesting than just releasing safe and boring records. But I guess that’s what’s disappointing, the dullness of the failures rather than the “WTF was that?” but y’know blah blah it’s not the 80s any more.
I had thought Mountain Goats were still on 4AD...? When did they switch? Fwiw I would’ve still voted for GGD since that has my favorite song of the year on it but All Eternals Deck probably would have made me think twice...
st. vincent
Genuinely agree with everything lex has said itt
holy fuck 4AD were the worst label ever in 2011
Zomby album by some way from Gang Gang.
Mountain Goats are on Merge now
