I’m guessing this isn’t *the* Opal. Ach, it’s so easy to google potential band/artist names now (or look at last.fm), why do people just not bother?
I think people have the right to perform under their given names whether they share it with some metal band or whatever.
And it’s like really like dancehall queens and metal bands are competing for marketshare either.
Opal (the original) is neither of these things, btw.
Oh alright, I shouldn’t have assumed that.
Emily’s point is valid, though. It’s the easiest thing in the world now to see if anyone else has put out records using the name you want to use. If you choose to go forward at that point, be ready to make some people irritated.
Not really sure internet penetration in Jamaica is that great (a quick google search says not really, no), esp. among the poor, but OK.
And also, back to my other point, it’s not the end of the world or even a big deal, like at all.
“Intentalo” comes as a breath of fresh air on this playlist. I didn’t even know it was nominated. I’m still not convinced it works all that well translating tribal into pop, but I will vote for it.

google will! i love last.fm but i’m not sure it’ll ever really have the necessary sway for that. you have many situations where there are multiple artists with the same name, but if they’re all confined to different locations (karizma and kingdom spring to mind) i doubt it bothers them...

a) Tell this to actors. Really, you are not aware of the fact that it is almost impossible to make a case for performing under your given name if there is a previously existing member of Equity who uses it?

Okay, I’m not au fait enough with the artists to be entirely sure what point you’re making, so if I’m misunderstanding you feel free to correct me. But, on a surface level, you seem to be equating making a name in tribute to another act with taking the name of another act entirely. Which is so different as to be ridiculous that you’d even suggest that they were the same. It’s perfectly reasonably to call yourselves a pun, a tribute, a nod or whatever, as long as the name itself is different.
As in, there is no way that ‘Horace Andy’ and ‘Bob Andy’ are the same. How do you make that distinction between ‘Opal’ and ‘Opal’?
There are loads of examples of bands accidentally taking on the same names as other bands, Nirvana being perhaps the most prominent example. When I was scanning around for more music by Sully, I ended up coming across a Canadian indie band, an Irish producer and ended up buying something off Boomkat I’m pretty sure is by none of those three artists.
Yeah, and you know what? One of my bands googled, we found an obscure defunct band had already taken the name we were going to use, and WE CHANGED IT. Because we weren’t a bunch of dicks.
btw, my #1 album is by the 18,000th group named King.

They’re not really done in tribute to the established artists, they’re essentially done so the new artist can jump on the bandwagon of the bigger artist’s popularity. Like if in the late 50s a new rock singer had come out named Elvis Peterson and no one batted an eye. But yes, you’re right, those examples are not the same as Opal not checking for the existence of a band called Opal.
This is a big generalization, but my point was that in Jamaican music culture there is much less of a perceived ethical harm in copying—there, I believe, this wouldn’t be seen as a dickish thing to do. OTOH since the band Opal have been defunct for two decades, I’m not sure what the harm is anyway? You make a good point about actors and Equity, but I see lots of (I) and (II)s behind actors’ names on the imdb all the time.
