It’s time once again for the annual fun fest that is our EOY music poll. Since there’s a good probability we’ll be shifting over from the sandbox back to real ILM at some point in either the nominations or voting process, we’re starting nominations a few days earlier than we usually do. J0rdan, seandalai and I have discussed it and we’re keeping things exactly the same as last year, since last year’s poll was such a success. Problem is, I’m having trouble accessing how we did last year’s poll because real ILM is down. SO, from the best of my recollection, I think last year’s nomination process worked like this:
You can nominate 25 (or fewer) items total. If you nominate 3 albums, you still have room to nominate 22 tracks. If you choose not to use all 25 of your nominations, you can (at your discretion) nominate things by proxy for other people who didn’t have enough room under the cap to nominate those things. This happens every year anyway, so I figured I’d go ahead and address it up top.
Nominations will wrap on Thursday, January 5th at 7pm EST (that’s midnight for Britishes and 4pm for the US West Coast). Voting will begin the following day and be open for the next two weeks. This nominations period is the time to familiarize yourself with and be introduced to new music, as it lasts a whole month. The voting period is all business. Get in, get out and then forget what all you voted for (we all do).
On your mark, get set... GO
Has musically abdicated for good?
I haven’t heard from her at all since I asked her about doing it last year. I haven’t even seen her around since well before then. So...I guess so?
Also, just remembered: plz don’t embed youtubes in this thread. Hyperlinks are fine, but embeds will bog it down for some people.

* I’m not sure if the Kami-Sakunobe House Explosion album and its tracks count... Some of the tracks and the album itself were released in Japan in 2006, but it was released outside Japan only in 2011. What’s the policy on these? I think it should be included, as most folks didn’t have the chance to hear this material until this year.
** This is an old track, but the edit only came out this year on Ben Liebrand’s Grand 12-Inches 8 compilation, so I think it should count.
One more thing... please use the following format for all your noms:

Yeah, we’ve always allowed things that received an int’l release in the current year that may have been released earlier in a specific country. Especially if new material is included on the int’l release.
Early request that the singles thread be titled ‘Everybody’s looking forward to the ILM best tracks of 2012 poll’.

THE 2010 ILM SUPER-MEGA YEAR-END ALBUMS ’N’ TRACKS POLL™—VOTING CLOSED
Message Bookmarked
Bookmark Removed
In a short amount of time, you will be able to vote in the 2010 ILM Albums ’n’ Tracks poll. Here is how it will work:
*A ballot will consist of (up to) 25 album votes and (up to) 25 track votes.
*Both categories will be allotted 650 total points each.
*An ordered albums/tracks ballot will count the points down from 50, 48, 46...6, 4, 2.
*An unordered albums/tracks ballot will have 26 points assigned to each vote.
*You MUST copy + paste your votes directly from the final list(s) of nominations, as syntax is of utmost importance.
*We must receive your ballot by midnight EST on Friday, January the 21st. That’s 5am on the 22nd in London and 9pm on the 21st in California. If you live outside of that 8-hour umbrella, please consult a global timezone map.
Beginning the 24th, J0rdan will countdown the singles and I’ll follow with albums once he finishes. As with the recent 20th century poll, our man behind the curtain is seandalai. Shower him with praise for handling the computation.
The online ballot and master nomination lists will be linked shortly so voting can begin. Thank you for participating!

Yay! thx
Was thinking it would be nice to allow split weighted/unweighted ballots this year—with trax in particular I have ~10 favourites but would quite like to spread points evenly among the other 15.
I think we threw in that option before closing voting last year? Maybe we didn’t.
We decided not to include it, I think.
Okay, then that gets changed this year. There will be split weighted/unweighted ballots allowed. :D
yay!

I don’t think we allow compilations of old material, do we? (assuming that’s what your last nom is)
Single artist greatest hits comps have traditionally been disallowed, but compilations like that where the end result is really the only place you can find such songs (essentially making it a “new” creation) are fine with me.
I’m sure we’ve allowed comps before. Or maybe that was just stuff that lay dormant and unreleased at the time, so although it was old it was still the first release.
I’d be sad if I couldn’t nominate Bangs & Works Vol.2 as it’s one of the newest, most relevant things to come out this year, and no you can’t really get hold of the individual tracks without going to Chicago and sifting through thousands of records.
Which reminds me:
ALBUMS
Machinedrum—Room(s)

Ok cool.
I guess basically comps will have to be included on a case by case basis. Things like archival various artist comps should always be allowed, because the end result of grouping all those tracks together is a “new” creation. Technically a single artist comp is new as well, but that just doesn’t smell right for what we’re doing here.
(Unless it’s a single artist comp of previously scarce or unreleased material, i.e. Arthur Russell from a few years back)

I feel a little weird listing compilations, actually, but this whole strand of Pakistani music was unfamiliar to me (not that I know much about Pakistani music) and I assume it’s largely unheard in the west. It wouldn’t surprise me if most of this music is also nearly forgotten in Pakistan, since a lot of it was riding western popular music trends of the time, obviously.

Before I do my tracks list, what’s the rule on something like “Super Bass” again, which was an album track in 2010 but didn’t become a hit until 2011?
If it placed last year, it’s out; not sure what the rule is otherwise.
Yeah, if it placed in 2010, it’s out. But if its presence was more of a 2011 thing (which is definitely the case for “Super Bass”), it’s def eligible.

2011 is the year I think I finally lost my way with modern music. Whether it was because I have finally given up on pop music, have lost all faith in mankind having ppl pretend skrillex or kanye don’t suck, or just because i made the mistake of getting tolstoy audiobooks for work thinking it would be easier than reading them, I dunno. Ok, most probably the last one.

glad people are feeling phaedra, i first saw her perform in oslo at the start of the year and it was one of those albums that didn’t necessarily blow me away immediately but sort of snaked under my skin and stayed there (and re-emerged when the weather got cold). gorgeous melodies, gorgeous details. very still.
Both that album and the Jenny Hval record were good singer-songwriter things on Rune Grammofon this year.
Her voice reminds me a bit or Julie Delpy, albeit with a Norwegian twist
or of
oh yeah the jenny hval album was good too! i should go back to it—i got both at the same time and ended up favouring phaedra so much that i forgot about hval somewhat...

Jon Brooks—Music For Thomas Carnacki (Radiophonic Themes & Abstracts)

Listening to the Phaedra album, just wow. I was expecting a Tangerine Dream knock off, not this.
Yeah I think the name is more likely to have come come via Nancy Sinatra than Edgar Froese

Hype Williams—Farthing Wood Dub
Pocketbooks—Sound Of The Carnival
Pushy Parents—Secret Secret
Thee Oh Sees—Dead Energy
Tunabunny—(Song For My) Solar Sister
(19/25)
The Thee Oh Sees track is a much faster and harder version of an earlier released track. This version came out this year on the split with Total Control.
it still alarms me everytime to be reminded that a) there’s a band that calls themselves Hype Williams and b) there are people that can bring themselves to listen to them.
tbh I would listen to Hype Williams the band over Pushy Parents, Humousexual, or Tunabunny if we are going srictly on horrible band names
well sure if you put it that way it’s hard to argue
would listen to a band called Tuomasexual though
cosign
I make a point of only listening to bands with astonishingly dreadful names.
Tracks noms up to 895 as of the last spreadsheet update (wow!)

It is so fucking big is this thread, too big for me. Apologies. I think I need to consult my old friend Rita Lynn.

you voted for a radiohead song
haven’t voted for anything yet. plus I am considering nominating a second Sunny Sweeney song. i might even vote for “Remind Me” as it is a decent song, but who knows. i just thought it was funny.

Well, that’s odd. I wouldn’t consider listing something by (say) Dave, Dee, Dozy, Beaky, Mick and Tich as “v/a”. It’s very much a collaboration.
I agree it should be listed under the artists—I just pointed it out so that (a) you get your nom back (b) it doesn’t turn up twice on the final nominations list.
hey whiney have you heard Wiccans—Skullduggery
Cool beans and thanx

i might vote for that shit
definitely going to vote for
teams vs star slinger—s/t
haha i feel like at one point was p much openly begging ppl to listen to that record
It’s a great record, I kinda slept on it until I saw Star Slinger doing his thing live and it was mindblowing, the way his beats seemed to fold in and explode on themselves.

oh god why was i even complaining about ‘hype williams’ when ‘joy orbison’ is still a thing that exists
he’s called O Joy Simpson now.
i think joy orbison has changed his moniker to joy o now. hype williams (the band) really suck though.
thought that na’tee mixtape was 2010?
Yeah he’s Joy O now, I liked his record ‘Jels’ this year
Oi ineloquentwow, I have already nominated that myself. One of the ones that I nominated that already hadn’t been nominated.

Oi excuse me!
should’ve changed his name to The Joy Omittable
I Didn’t Mean to sound rude lebateauivre. It is hard to keep track of what has already been nominated.
No problem, didn’t take it that way! I felt disappointed with myself for I hate others for not looking if something hadn’t been nommed yet. But with this one I though “surely not”... And I’m very pleased I was wrong :)
A couple more I’ve just discovered:
Amanda Applewood—I Love Boys
Wussy—Pizza King
Not sure what the dealio is with comps but if possible I’d like to nom for
Various Artists—Still Going In Offices
Which is a compilation on Savoury Days, half is new stuff, half is old but generally ridiculously obscure post-punk/DIY/Messthetics-type releases. It’s fucking ace.
browsed through the spreadsheet and found out that someone nominated Kasia Nosowska’s single (and that’s nice!), while nobody nom’d my fav Katy B cut yet, so:
TRACK:
Katy B—Witches’ Brew
(17/25)
clemenza, are those albums or trax?
TRACK
White Town—She’s A Lot Like You
(21/25)
Sorry—everything I’m nominated or will nominate is a track.
White Town is making new music?!
also, thx clemenza.
I forgot about that White Town song. It’s good!

The Original 7ven is the band formerly known as the Time. I’ll add my tracks to the Spotify list. Kitchen’s Sink are genius—Australian punk somewhere between Flipper and garage jangle pop. Here’s the video for 116.
I’d also strongly rep for the Unknown Mortal Orchestra album, which was slow to flower on me, but really emerged as one of the more unusual and beautiful albums of the year.
Loving the Spotify playlist, maybe partly because I clicked “Time” and am listening from shortest to longest. Haven’t yet got to stuff longer than 3 minutes...

Jamie, u fuck with the Pistol Annies record?
ah shit just realised was viewing the thread with 500 messages not showing so my search wasn’t working. gimme a min and will repost the tracks list (albums one is fine)
wow, thx for nomming “Suicide Demo”! almost forgot to do it myself
ALBUMS
Peepholes—Caligula
(19/25)
ah ironically it’s only county line that was already nominated.
hmm i definitely prefer the Pistol Annies to the new Miranda solo, but to be honest i’m starting to find her a little annoying. not sure why, i find something in her voice just a little too smug and unfeeling from time to time.
actually as a proxy for my wife i will put in some commercial country tracks from this year that i’ve enjoyed when she’s played them:
Tracks -
The Band Perry—If I Die Young
Rascal Flatts—Easy ft Natasha Beddingfield
that Band Perry album is actually really enjoyable!
Shanell-My Button
25/25
Have been saving my last nomination for a while, was planning to use it for the Horrors album but I’ve totally fallen in love with this song over the last couple of days.
TRACKS
Connan Mockasin—Forever Dolphin Love
William D. Drake—Homesweet Homestead Hideaway
The Devin Townsend Project—The Mighty Masturbator
Ulver—Stone Angels
To Arms Etc—The Black Pampas
North Sea Radio Orchestra—Berliner Luft

ALBUMS
To Arms Etc—To Arms Etc
Van Der Graaf Generator—A Grounding In Numbers
The Devin Townsend Project—Deconstruction
TBH I don’t really know what my top albums of the year are. I’ve missed out on so much. Still 12 nominations remaining but I doubt I’ll use them all (if any).
Do we still nominate here even though ILX is back up? If so, here are the handful of things that might populate the lower reaches of my ballot, since everything important has been covered already—a.k.a. I LOVE YOU ILM.
TRACKS
Delilah—Go
Dark0—HYLI
Kirko Bangz—Drank In My Cup
Ke$ha—Shots On The Hood Of My Car
Carly Rae Jepsen—Call Me Maybe
TV on the Radio—Will Do
Prince Club—Love Jackson (Original Mix)
The Good Natured—Skeleton
Active Child—Playing House (feat. How to Dress Well)
Seany Mac—One of Those Days (Organ Mix)
Re: that last one by Seany Mac—it was released (according to the internet) in 2009, but none of us knew about it until this year when it appeared on two mixes by Physical Therapy and How to Dress Well. Do we do “year of impact on ILM” or is it totally out of the question?
Keep noms in here for the moment. I’ll make a thread on proper ILM later tonight.
though ILX is back up
really? when i type the original ilxor.com-url, it always redirects to the sandbox here.
