ftr i do wish donald glover had gotten the spiderman role

Henry Rollins confronts Donald Glover about the use of the word Blipster in a NYC record shop xpost

album would’ve had a lot more semen jokes

xp

I’m not sure if it’s that having fame before standup means you’re going to be bad at standup. I think it’s more that standup is really its own discipline to such an extent that you need to practice and work really hard at it to get a level of comfort and to be successful on the stage. More likely that if you’re already famous, you’re not necessarily willing to put in that work — or you’ll sub in the stuff you’re already comfortable with without developing the new skills. xp

that’s exactly what i meant fwiw, i just didn’t want to type all that out

oh, yeah, otm then

plus it’s also the refuge of guys who become comedy stars in TV or movies and then stop getting a lot of roles and realize they can make good money filling a comedy club any night of the week even if they’re really not built for that line of work, which is how we get something like the Michael Richards debacle

LOL @ the idea of donald glover “dominating either movies or TV

The second Community gets canceled he’d be offered his own show by FX and Comedy Central, probably network tv, and would get a first right of refusal for every single role that Aziz Ansari would get offered.

how many references to sister, sister does it to get to the center of donald glover

i just

by proxy you’re comparing the careers of robin williams and aziz ansari, which....

I get a little off-track, bear with me...

rereading this p4k article & wondering if maybe childish gambino doesn’t lack self awareness per se but just isn’t up to the minute on rap trends? i get the feeling that we’re in a whineyesque bubble here, what was for the past two years a trickle of stereogum updates (Beyonce Ass Moved by Grizzly Bear Concert) has only really become a tide circa somewhere between mbdtf & take care. not sure how perceptible the trends ian cohen &c (myself incl) are distinctly aware of are on a macro/college campus level

i don’t think that donald glover’s awareness or unawareness of the growing intersection between rap and indie music has much to do w/ whether or not he succeeds in creating an outsider persona, unless you want to give him pity points for ignorance

i think the outsider persona is more palpable to other audiences, incl ones that share that ignorance. not that that isn’t an audience who also share the horrible taste & sense of humour. but in the same way most people hearing Foster the People are unaware of indie dance pop trends of the past three years, probably fewer are aware that it’s indie rock artist bon iver mumbling crap eight minutes into a kanye single, or know who lil b is aside from a guy who makes funny jokes about bitches wanting to have sex with him for improbable reasons. and i think the childish gambino persona is considerably more novel if you’re not clued into these micro-narratives. not that you’re not an asshole if you like this music—but it frames an argument about his Self Awareness around audience groups & the reviewer’s nerd knowledge rather than the music itself

but Strongo man you’re breaking my heart

lol sorry man. god knows i’ve put in my time trying to like it. and it’s not as if you don’t know i watch hella tv so this isn’t some Hipster Shits on Something He’s Never Seen from His Olympian Williamsburg HQ or some shit.

there’s something about the rhythm of it that’s off to me. i get the same vibe from parks and rec and happy endings and a lot of other current shows. the 30 rock rhythm on +8 or something.

relatedly/unrelatedly i fell really hard for the drake album while ilx was down

community has a fabulous rythm & density of jokes imo but i hate 30 rock and parks & rec

what, we don’t like auto-tune the news around here

parks and rec makes me strangely angry, like i get really resentful that there arent any jokes [lazy childish gambino zing]

parks and rec makes me strangely angry because it’s the third iteration of the office and i think we’ve all had enough at this point

community is television for people who frame their Mensa membership cards but still eat boogers

dying

lol

Shit like this makes my fucking skin crawl:

“If there was any doubt that Community was one of the smartest half-hour comedies to ever air on network television, allow us to enter this into evidence....”

http://www.wired.com/underwire/2011/11/community-beetlejuice-easter-egg/

Might as well replace “Community” with “xkcd” and “comedies” with “web comics” if that’s your definition of smart. Oh, sigh, why couldn’t Buñuel muster such droll commentary when he did Le Charme Discret de la Bourgeoisie?

An endless string of meta-commentary and audience-aggrandizing patter was so **SMART** when it was called <i>Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back</i>. Get bent.

you know we have a community thread

haha i prefer this guy to whiney

idg the using html tags thing

it’s meta

And putting some imaginary line in the sand between this cutesy, hyper-pop-culturey, clever-qua-clever shitcom and the Twitter raps of Childish Gambino is like pretending Jackass didn’t spawn the Steve-O rap album

discreet charm of the bbcode

what about arrested development, do you have a rant about that

I hear there’s a movie coming out

arrested development sucked/sucks shit too, but i dont need to make longwinded hipster refs to express that.

i have to say the buñuel reference convinced me its not whiney

rereading this p4k article & wondering if maybe childish gambino doesn’t lack self awareness per se but just isn’t up to the minute on rap trends? i get the feeling that we’re in a whineyesque bubble here, what was for the past two years a trickle of stereogum updates (Beyonce Ass Moved by Grizzly Bear Concert) has only really become a tide circa somewhere between mbdtf & take care. not sure how perceptible the trends ian cohen &c (myself incl) are distinctly aware of are on a macro/college campus level

well part of the problem is that he seems to have not been keeping up with rap trends for the past decade, or that because he is sooooo indie, he only has a handful of rap records and doesn’t know what the shit his record should sound like in 2011.

nah come on the buñuel ref is classic whiney

“this seems highbrow enough to make my point, just hope no one actually calls me out on the specifics”

yeah theres fact that it doesnt make a tonne of sense in context but it seemed a v unwhiney ref idk

mostly i’m just lol’ing at the thou protestest too muchest from one of the four or five ilx posters with one of the most recognizable sentence-making styles of all-time.

buñuel more like poo-nuel

just occurred to me that a crispin glover would likely be as good a rapper as childish gambino, but danny glover would likely be better

/too old for this shit

btw, the last autotune the news skit was released in 2010; all the cool kids are dogpiling pompletune the mousse

forks just figured that i’d give you a heads up that i’m going to allow you to ridicule me for at least a year when the 9 minute riff raff sodmg youtube freestyle is on my 2011 p&j ballot

s’all good fam

you can take the kid off the blog but you can’t take the blog out the kid

in many ways jordan, i like to think of myself as the jaz to your hova

the kool keith to your gambino as it were

smanging the replay button

lol is this the first youtube-comment-based meme on ilx?

i recognized Al in this thread instantly. it was pretty incredible. all for funny posts too

i have given up on the new display name thing because i feel so dense not being 100% sure who will smif or joey joe joe junior shabadoo is

i dont know will smif obv im d33j

oh ok

lol cld tell deej from a mile off

deej was somewhat obvious but not whiney-level undeniable

just occurred to me that a crispin glover would likely be as good a rapper as childish gambino, but danny glover would likely be better

idk have you heard “Auto Manipulator”?

NB It’s not a good song

Though I don’t think it’s trying to be.

i don’t understand why this artist is apparently the only one people want to discuss in the sandbox?

258 new answers and every other thread is tumbleweed

because the only other ilx baiting record is by a dude already discussed to the point of having nothing interesting to say, whose record was made dull by eminem

feel free to start all the me’shell ndegeocello threads you want bro

that doesn’t really answer the qn. why do you want to talk about this guy so much?

i started an entire r&b thread and no one posted in it!

i don’t even understand what joke that’s meant to be

because he is a relevant comedian/entertainer/rapper/writer who is easy to lol at and is also on a tv show many of us like?

of course we know you hate comedy, so maybe you don’t understand.

oh i didn’t know he was on a tv show, i don’t watch tv. not sure how to turn it on tbh. why do you want to lol at bad music instead of talking about good music?

kmt @ comedy obv. no one should try to be funny, ever

who’s trollin whoooooooo...and who’s bein trueeeeeeee

well not everyone can do it so well without trying like you (xpost)

lol

i’m being real! the last time i was in the house by myself and i wanted to turn the tv on, i ended up...having to watch x factor on a shitty internet stream :(

kinda lol, mostly sad

was even more sad when i first read it as x files

wait...is lex being straight-up about the comedy thing?

yeah a few months ago there was a whole revelation on some thread about lex being against the entire human pursuit of comedy

comedy is conceptually abhorrent to me

lmao

lex is right. why are we spending all this time talking about childish gambino when we could clearly talk about how insane lex is

i once dreamed of a career in comedy but i gave it up once i realized i could never create a character as funny as the lex

i’m not funny! i don’t do funny

if you think you get to decide that then that probably explains the root of your problem

Is lex one of them indirect Neil Hamburger comedians

“it’s funny because I probably know every hip-hop influence on that album”—a friend

so wait he’s heard of obscure local chicago producer kayne west?

so wait he’s heard of obscure local chicago producer kayne west?

well tbf the implication was Kanye West and maybe something like KRS-One, or whatever has recently made a Pitchfork list.

KRS recently made a P4k list?????

Wow I am out of the loop.

“Alright, Gambino is a mastermind, fuck a bitch to pass the time

Mass Appeal, orange rind, smoke your green, I’m spendin’ mine

The beat is witches brew, but beware this shit is potent

E. e. cummin’ on her face, now that’s poetry in motion

Yeah, Gambino make it work, I’m the boss move somethin’

Yeah, this cool fuckin’ suits me, swag two button

Yeah, these girls be actin’ crazy when they’re dancin’, Black Swan

I ain’t fuckin’ at the club, put your clothes back on

This beat is a disaster, 9/11 this track

Rappers wanna battle me, I have to mail their heads back

And my clique make that dinero, so it’s time to meet the fuckers

I am runnin’ this bitch, you are just a dog walker”

jesus I thought you guys were cherry picking the bad lines or something like ILX can do now and then, but holy jesus, this whole verse is almost Shaquille O’Neal level rap

this friend of mine said this was his favorite rap album of the year. like I have to seriously question the friendship now.

there are like 5 great lines there

name them, brave soul

i mean run this bitch/dog walker is fine but great?

1. Mass Appeal, orange rind, smoke your green, I’m spendin’ mine

2. E. e. cummin’ on her face, now that’s poetry in motion

3. Yeah, this cool fuckin’ suits me, swag two button

4. Yeah, these girls be actin’ crazy when they’re dancin’, Black Swan

5. I am runnin’ this bitch, you are just a dog walker“

Black Swan = generic hashtag Young Money tripe

EE cummin on her face = whose face? the beat’s? Paul Barman-level one-line.

I think the bitch/dog walker one is eyerolly, the other two I don’t mind.

paul barman is infinitely better than childish gambino

Mass Appeal, orange rind, smoke your green, I’m spendin’ mine

wtf

9/11 this track is the worst.

nah it’s not a patch on the casey anthony line
