I’m a fan.

ban Johnny Fever

I watched his stand up. It was not funny.

Only thing worth the time was a Tracy Morgan story, but you know, that is more because of Tracy than Glover.

he is apparently every tumblr girl’s dreamboat

so obviously i hate him

lol

THE CHILDISH GAMBINO

“Freaks and Geeks” was actually alright, in a kinda lol @ nerdy guy trying to be Weezy way, but I heard Camp and good god is it awful. Like every other bar has a tumblr reference and songs are full of lines about how he doesn’t brag about his Emmy. I love the dude on Community and find his stand-up to be decent, but please lord do not cancel his show so he has more time for this.

Still not as ridiculous as that Drake picture thread.

that is what is blowing my mind

he’s really hot and he’s funny on community but he sux at rapping.

<—tumblr girl

my manez

and with one picture i immediately love him

The only rap-related albums I noticed in Paste website’s recently released list of their fave 2011 albums:

35. Childish Gambino – Camp

48. Drake – Take Care

http://stereogum.com/890842/pastes-top-50-albums-of-2011/list/

Funny stuff. Those pasty folks love their Bon Iver more of course.

I’m not going to go to bat for Glover because let’s face it, a large amount (if not all) of his rap persona is tied up in being as corny as humanly possible. I really like the “Bonfire” video, though.

I just remembered that his record features an ILM baiting line, “the only black guy at a Sufjan concert”.

So tempted to liveblog this record, “my name’s not Mumford, I ain’t trying to have sons”.

DO IT

“my name’s not Mumford, I ain’t trying to have sons”

Hmm. Ready the guillotine.

bon iver bangs harder than drake or gambino

this guy is complete horseshit

hi m@tt!!

dude is terrible, yes, and I am starting to regret impulse-buying his album in a fit of contrarianism... but he’s still less annoying to me than Drake

I think the worst of both worlds is that two minute interlude thing on Camp where Glover does his best to channel Drake by singing over a string section while whining.

Love him on Community, listened to this once and couldn’t get through it. First couple of tracks were alright but really I lost interest when I realised he wasn’t attempting to be the new Will Smith.

hey hoos :)

I love the dude on Community and find his stand-up to be decent, but please lord do not cancel his show so he has more time for this.

My sentiments exactly. I really love him on Community so I wanted to like this, but it is just bad.

Plus, he has all of the rape-y punchlines of Tyler, the Creator, except more obnoxious. Taking shots at some girl on Tumblr who called your use of rape jokes rape-y is NAGL.

^^ that’s...disappointing to hear about

“that well-spoken token”

he’s really really terrible but if there isn’t already there’s gonna be an infinite feedback loop of PEOPLE SAY I’M TERRIBLE, I’M GONNA RAP ABOUT IT -> man, this guy is fucking terrible -> PEOPLE SAY I’M TERRIBLE, I’M GONNA RAP ABOUT IT

i think the solution here is for everyone to stop watching/caring about COMMUNITY. i’m sorry, but it has to be done for the greater good of the nation.

wait he has a 75 on metacritic, he should stfu

if xxl says this about you — Taken on the whole, Camp is full of top-tier lyricism, honesty, uncertainty and triumph. — then you no longer get to complain about people telling you not to rap because you’re a nerd or w/e

it’s weird to me that for being a comedian, his music is incredibly humorless. like, i’m not saying he needs to be doing weird al shit, but his self-crucifixion complex is so off-putting. like, his music isn’t even as funny as das racist, let alone, like, ludacris (at least when he was good)

is Childish Gambino the dumbest name for an mc yet

btw if u guys didn’t know—he got “childish gambino” from an internet wu tang name generator

First couple of tracks were alright but really I lost interest when I realised he wasn’t attempting to be the new Will Smith.

Will Smith don’t gotta tumbl to sell records

Well I do

So fuck you and fuck your mouth too

have you noticed how every 5 star grammy-winning kanye west album is full of constant references to how people dare criticize him and try to stop his greatness?

i used to call childish gambino the new ‘eddie murphy’s music career’ but on the real this shit isn’t even as good as “party all the time”

at least kanye has been publicly vilified twice by people that like watch the view

Now I actually want to hear his Pitchfork retorts because you just fuckin’ know this guy’s been waiting for them to review his shit for months.

i’ve never heard this guy’s music or watched that show but the likelihood of me doing either after reading that review is now close to zero. a textbook hardsonning.

That review is really OTM

I would still rather listen to this than Dranke

(who is a German Drake impersonator)

To be fair, his work on Community would give you absolutely no clue that he is also a terrible, rape-y rapper. I wouldn’t condemn the show for his shitty vanity project.

ty for this joke

If we were out of sandbox, “Dranke, the German Drake Impersonator” would be my DN right now.

Not to start this conversation yet again, but Community is pretty dire as well.

the first line of that review is fire

“hashtag rap’s tombstone”

man, i hope so

u guys know you can set DNs?

I do now.

i kinda wanted to give that review a standing ovation at my desk

finally, someone has the courage to stand up to the overwhelming musical force that is childish gambino.

he’s gotten good reviews and sold big numbers for someone on an indie label?

lol n/a, I thought for sure you were linking a negative review that was using Tiananmen Square as an analogy

the review was funny but dude is an “actor/rapper” with a stupid name that people have been mocking since he turned into a rapper. no one really likes his music. it’s like zinging dr. morbius, it’s kinda fun but too easy to be satisfying.

i guess, i don’t know. he just sold 50,000 albums in one week, so some people like his music.

eh, I bought one of those copies and I don’t really like his music

I’d honestly love to see the breakdown of that 50k in terms of how many people had been following his stuff via blogs and how many bought it because “oh, dude from Community. I’d hazard about 20% the former, 80% the latter.

DJ Quik sells 15k and this guy sells 50k :(

tbh I bought it, not because I expected to like it, but because I figured Community was getting cancelled after this year and I wanted to throw dude some royalties

basically n/a’s point (if he actually has one) is that the review while, funny, was pointless because nobody actually cares about childish gambino or thinks that his music is good. i think there is ample evidence that both of those things are untrue.

I bought because my wife asked me to when she saw it was out, she hates it more than I do.

i don’t have much of a point aside from the album’s an easy target so pitchfork’s zingy review doesn’t seem like that big of a deal to me

i didn’t know about humble brag as a twitter thing until his post, but i’ve since looked it up and become just a little more misanthropic

Community’s Donald Glover chats with Marc about the Confederate South, black nerds, Spider-man, Tracy Morgan, Jehovah’s Witnesses, foster kids, and Childish Gambino.

Yeah, let’s keep steering this back to the days when we were all on the same side of hating Childish Gambino.

feel like microbrews are like skinny jeans or the arcade fire or something...there was a point when that mighta been a hipster reference point but today I can totally see a frat dude in skinny jeans w/ a local beer rocking out to the arcade fire.

I don’t actually like this guy I was just bored the other day

solitary posts that effortlessly sum up ilx

today i overheard 2 people talking about a Community joke (the ‘room temperature’ room) and one of them was a 60-year-old CEO and in the back of my mine i was thinking WAIT YOU DON’T FIT THE TUMBLR WHITE PROFILE

mine=mind

Pretty sure that dude is just a TV watcher and not the shrill idiot loudmouth HOW DAR U CANCEL SMARTEST SHOW ON TELEVISION OK TIME TO GO TO SANTACON ppl that are the most vocal about being community fans

wow is Santacon a tumblr whites thing now too?

game done changed

only 100 people watched community...but they all started tumblrs

i literally cant imagine what other type of person would be into santacon besides TWs

whiney the underlying point that you will never get is that most people watching (or quoting or talking about) any given show are just TV watchers and not part of an oppressively obnoxious cultural force

is that how you sleep at night?

what is 1 santacon?

it’s an event where people who bought whiney’s book at urban outfitters put on santa hats

You’re destroying whiney’s carefully cultivated narratives that help him sleep better at night, ship.

whiney knows way too much and drops way too many references to idk—hipster culture?—to somehow claim he’s exempt

i once started a tumblr (and after a month forgot about updating it) and enjoy community.

i take depression pills.

three things most probably related.

shipley you’re dumber than a Childish Gambino fan if you think that i believe literally EVERY community watcher is a comedy-mustache-wearing lolcat-trading fleet-foxes-jackin dipshit; but they are certainly the loudest and most shrill audience, so I’ll continue to lump your dumb ass with them because it’s hilar

fleet-foxes-jackin = they are masturbating while listening to the fleet foxes, or they’re stealing the fleet foxes’ stuff for their own fleet fox style bands?

was more an expression of surprise at how widespread/well known santacon is now, that’s all. also santacon predates tumblr by quite a bit so it’s just weird to me to see those two things lumped together. but whatever, keep fightin the good fight whiney!

xp

it’s all good, dude, i can deal with having my sense of humor attacked by people who say “hilar”

In further “2 much time spent decaying in front of laptop” news, definitely (“deffo”) thought ‘Santacon’ was in some way like ‘shotacon’ for a sec

santacon is kingfish status, I imagined tumblr whites skewing younger

yeah you should’ve switched out santacon with “rally to restore sanity” imo

either way whiney is like MJ in 96 itt

“Microbrew(ery)” is a term that refers only to the production capacity. “Craft” is more about the brewer’s approach to how the beer is made. Obviously there’s a lot of overlap — most craft beers come from what are technically microbreweries — but the terms aren’t exactly synonymous. (Some parallels with “indie,” probably.)

Anyway, I’m like a week late to this thread, and I still haven’t heard any Childish Gambino — though I did randomly see last week’s musical episode of Community — but I wanted to respond to this:

Like if you want comedy rap, this is at least a step above like MC LARS HORRISHIT or whatever, but there’s a whole school of MCs—Copywrite, High & Mighty, Apathy, Bumpy Knuckles, J-Zone, Celph Titled, Chino XL, even Joe Buddden—that do the constant hammering-away-at-punchlines thing. Sorry they’re not ADORABLE and on NBC’s Pomplamoose-comedy half-hour sitcom, Tumblr whites.

This makes it sound like people are deliberately choosing Childish Gambino over those other acts. The fact that Glover is on TV doesn’t make him better, but it does make him a million times more visible. Most people really don’t want to spend a lot of time digging for music they might like, so the guy who’s on a network sitcom has a distinct advantage. None of this is Glover’s fault. And none of his fans are claiming that he’s better than a dozen rappers they’ve never heard of.

should team up with the guy from the Better Off Ted sitcom.

haha jesus i love Better Off Ted so this is something else for me to feel horribly conflicted about

the epidemic of actors and show biz types deciding to be rappers is going to be so much more awful in the long term than Dog Star or The Return of Bruno ever was

the epidemic of actors and show biz types deciding to be rappers is going to be so much more awful in the long term than Dog Star or The Return of Bruno ever was

dunno what metric yr going by here tbh

no, there’s actually a jaw that happens between the chin and the neck!

thanks subway

I’m just saying I’ve never heard anyone in the NW ever use the phrase “craft beer”.

And I haven’t heard anyone say “microbrew” in years.

Seems v. 90s.

I heard someone say microbrew on Saturday.

Note: I am not living in the 90s.

i have never heard ‘craft beer’ in conversation ever, have not heard ‘microbrew’ much but then i don’t really want to live in a world where people talk about what they’re drinking beyond a “what’ll you have?” or “i have some ____ in the fridge if you want any”

tumblr brew

yeah i haven’t heard ‘microbrew’ in years. now i think most ppl just refer to beer by its name (ala “i have some ___ in the fridge”). honestly with the ppl i hang out with, the term i hear most is ‘good beer’ or ‘decent beer.’ like, “i’ll get a case of pbr but you might want to get a sixer of something decent, too.” esp since now you can get stuff that’s like maybe $1–2 more a six-pack than PBR, miles better, and available at the gas station (if you live in some enlightened state where beer can be purchased in gas stations).

i think too if you live some place with a lot of local breweries then the novelty of drinking something other than bud or pbr has long since evaporated and ppl just get w/e they like or is on special

such a good derail. anyways—i think once people get into a local microbrew (people still say that up here) the tendency is to stick with it, or failing that something equally snobby/expensive.

Well, all kinds of people like good beer; only certain kind nerd out about it

“Craft beer” seems p. widespread to me, from restaurant menus to local media features.

In conversation, though, I think I mostly say it when I’m referring to a bar or restaurant, like “They have a decent craft selection.” (Though I might also just say, “They have a good beer list.”)

turdy nerd shit, huh? now fulla rapeyness!
