Kendrick has a much less corny flow and vocal tone, he has more control, his voice doesn’t dip up in frequency like ka’naan’s does. it’s nowhere near as corny. i mean, they might have voices at roughly the same frequency but that’s true of tons of other rappers as well.

i mean, lamar just sounds cooler and less earnestly eager-to-please than kanaan, and i mean that in the sense of his vocals, never mind his lyrics. Lyrically, Kendrick is also a lot more oblique & less on-the-nose obvious about what his ‘point’ is, it’s a lot more about conveying a feeling than trying to hammer home a message

i just feel like you’re compartmentalizing rappers into such distinct categories that you can’t even begin to comprehend someone hearing a very elemental sonic similarity based on something more external and superficial — it’s like “no no they have NOTHING in common, this guy wears doo rags and this guy wears kufis!!!!”

i was reluctant about kendrick lamar at first but im over it now i think; i like that he’s got a weird way of rapping and i’m really excited about some of the production he’s getting & in the general dissemination of that style
sometimes i just wanna say
yeah fuck i only listened to dreamchasers the other day and meant to come straight here and rave about that beans verse. he’s one of the only rappers than can send shivers down my spine. i didn’t really get ‘middle of summer’ before but it works so well in the context of that tape.
middle of the summer was awesome, it captures a vibe that feels a lot more rare in popular hip-hop right now that used to seem more prevalent
def — there’s something evocative about that beat and him just kinda repeating the song title
verse is dope too, dude is a very storyteller
that track i guess isn’t much of a story, but it kinda is — very macro story
if i have a few bucks to spend that week i’m gonna buy them all just off the respect

This is no dis to mixtapes. I like mixtapes. But you have some people putting out mixtapes when it really is their album, but [calling it a mixtape] is just a security blanket in case the project don’t perform well.

the branding of actual well crafted albums as if they’re free quickie mixtapes is funny but i can’t imagine getting actually mad at it, like unwrapping a hershey’s kiss and it’s actually a gourmet chocolate truffle and you just throw it away in disgust

so kind of like the gourmet truffle is melted and a bit of the wrapper is stuck to it
except we’re talking about the mixtapes that are essentially albums (i.e. less dubious, less shouting)

I just don’t like the way “mixtape” has come to be such a sloppily applied, catch-all term. Quality of individual mixtapes is irrelevant.
calling something a “mixtape” these days tells me essentially nothing about the project.
is it a collection of songs by different artists mixed together? a collection of all-new material by a single artist? a collection of cast-offs/unreleased songs by a single artist? WHO KNOWS
