on the one hand you look at people he’s produced like florence and adele and he’s obviously good at foregrounding their personalities etc and subtlety isn’t really what azealia is about amirite, but on the other there’s her interest in singing and especially musical theatre and i could see that being brought more into focus a lot more for the sake of wider appeal. cos you don’t hire this guy without thinking of those multi plat albums.

otoh it can’t have escaped anyone’s notice that she’s made her breakthrough with a straight-up rap song. and tbh the “212” beat isn’t all that, it’s all her (and her personality being more important than her beats goes back to the first banks songs i heard in ’09)
’212’ beat is ‘wearing my rolex’ levels of corny fun. i think this is why people go mad for it as opposed to it being a straight up rap song.

my problem w/ the paul epworth thing is that clearly they’re trying to go the nicki minaj route in terms of turning her into a pop star who transcends rap, but nicki was able to do that partly because she had built a fanbase up over a year plus, she had already dropped multiple classic verses and introduced her personality and shit like that. if she went from “itty bitty piggy” to “right thru me” there’s nooo way she’d have the career she has now.
the whole azealia thing seems really hasty to me, they shoulda let her breathe a bit. i know she’s been in with labels for a bit now but idk.

even if the domo-kun mixtape is a chore to get through and i had to wrap my head around his weird anti-flow, i find myself bumping to “pound” and “loud pockets” and “overdrive” all the time and stopped listening to the slj track after a few days or whatever
the anti-flow is way toned down on this new tape tho. it’s still there enough to be distinctively him but it’s incorporated into a more regular rapping style. and i’m glad he’s both developing and keeping a distinctive approach

man i completely disagree that L’s earlier stuff was more memorable. SL Jones is like 100x better rapper.

im unsure whether or not young l’s young l music is worth listening to: does the initial awesome reaction to the beat propel you through the next 3 minutes of grating, repetitive rapping? i rarely make it through an entire song & just end up sampling each beat on his tapes

The Beyonce line is very wtf, and I don’t agree re: Kreayshawn at all, and then there’s this paragraph, which is just embarassing:

I think it’s still a pretty narrow sample size... Princess Superstar and Lady Sovereign are non-entities over here (and Toure didn’t seem interested in engaging with UK hip hop or how it would figure in at all—probably just would have muddied the waters since class/race issues are so different between the US & UK)
the earliest example I can think of ESG but they weren’t exactly rapping
