The Jesus & Mary Chain return to play their first shows in nine years
when they appear at Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival in Indio
California on Friday April 27th and at the Summercase Festival in
Madrid (Boadilla del Monte) and Barcelona (Parc del Forum) on July 13th
and 14th.
Jim Reid answers some questions:
1/ why are you doing the show now?
“Well, I would say ‘why not?’ there are many reasons really. Firstly
it’s taken this long for me and William to get to a point where it
would be realistic to do it, and to some degree each of us assumed the
other wouldn’t be interested, and it was only after we talked about it
that we realised this. Also Coachella were very persistent.”
2/ The last show was in 1998?
“Yes, the last Mary Chain gig was in 1998 and was such a bloody awful
mess, too much drink, too many drugs, nobody seeing eye to eye on
anything and the band just blew up, and I suppose you could say this is
another good reason for our reformation, cause that was no way for the
Mary Chain to end.”
3/ William lives in LA and you live in Devon?
“You can imagine the problems this presents.”
4/ Who else is in the band?
“On bass it’s Phil King, on drums it’s Loz Colbert, and on second
guitar is Mark Crozer, and of course myself and William.
5/ Will there be more shows and an album?
“I really don’t know. Maybe. I think we would like to and we’re looking
at another show or 2.”
6/ Are William and yourself working on solo albums?
“Yes, both are at the recording stage at the moment, and both will
hopefully be out later in the year.”

Since when have JAMC needed an insanely good drummer?
It doesn’t necessarily mean they’d be bad with one!
Actually, they had a blinding drummer around the time of Honey’s Dead and Stoned and Dethroned. They were an amazing live band. But then he left to join, like, Curve or Echobelly or someone.
I’d really like to hear what the JAMC would sound like with Loz. He’s a much... BIGGER drummer than they are used to. Not that he is physically big, but his sound is huge. They’ll never be able to confiscate his cymbals or his toms.

Did not know that. I wonder who it was. I’ve never seen the JAMC live, so in my head I expect them to still have crappy 80s drum machine sounds.
King and Colbert were playing together with someone recently, but I can’t remember who it was. I think it was either Jim Reid or Mark Gardiner, but it could easily have been someone else altogether. I didn’t go, anyway.
I wonder who it was.

Mark Gardener did a few solo shows with Loz, err, last year I think, at Sonic Cathedrals. I ended up not being able to go but grrr, coz the last time I saw Gardener my ex was playing drums for him. :-(
ride and the mary chain toured together back in the day i’m sure, just as ride supported oasis in 1994 and then lost andy bell to them.
oh wait, the rollercoaster tour was jamc, mbv, blur and dinosaur jnr wasn’t it? so, not that then.

It was different depending on the country. MBV and Blur were UK, Curve and I think were in US. But that would have been where the drummer stealage might have happened.
I’m not aware of Ride and JAMC touring together. My housemate would have exploded had they done so.
when I caught the Rollercoaster tour in Detroit, the line-up was JAMC, Curve & Spiritualized...JAMC and Curve were both in fine form...I didn’t get there in time to catch Pierce and Co.

i was at that detroit show, it was on devil’s night, i had concerns about being in detroit on that night. although by then newark was the arsonists place to be.
was it Newark or Camden that stole the Arson crown?
I’ve since moved, and I wish I had remembered to pilfer one of those orange signs the city would stick on abandoned houses, with the big eye, and the slogan “The eyes of Detroit are on you” or somesuch...realy cool-looking...
