is there new akron/family? that last EP sucked

do they have any recorded music better than just average? i’ll bring first album in car today and maybe re-assess, but so far i haven’t been blow away by anything.

I kinda disliked the EP/mini-LP/whatever at first, but it’s grown on me. at one point a couple dudes in the audience started singing “Blessing Force” and pretty soon everyone joined in and I realized what an awesome song it is.

the Angels of Light split is still my favorite though, if only for the balls-out rock’n’roll madness of “Raising the Sparks”.

the lyrics are terrible. the non-lyrical singing is not impressive either.

the songs are pretty typical and not anything to write home about at that.

it’s like saying that Vetiver blew you away or something. it’s pleasant and all that, but sometimes listening to music that reminds me of starbucks is just not appropriate.

The first time I saw them live I was also really taken by them. The second time I saw them live the opener was the Hamid Drake/William Parker duo. They reminded me what’s it’s really like to be blown away, and then when the AF came on they just came off like some shitty college goofball band and I wound up walking out.

Their records aren’t very good either.

Oh yeah plus when they got on stage the nerdier-looking guitarist was like “Yeah, a lot of you guys probably don’t know much about William Parker and Hamid Drake but you should really check them out.” UH, WHO THE FUK ARE YOU AGAIN?

I could see maybe if he was playing in Indiana or something, but this was at Tonic in NYC.

I liked ’em pretty well when I saw them although opener Richard Bishop was far superior. The records are pretty insubstantial. All in all, Hurting OTM.

I don’t mean to be the douchey guy who calls people out because he feels like they have somehow erred in forming their opinions, but... how much Akron/Family have you listened to? their noisier stuff (which is all they played at this show) is basically the complete opposite of what you are describing.

I’m curious, too, ‘cuz I bought that one with the food head guy on it a couple years ago. Bored me to tears. You say they have good records?

Their half of the Angels of Light split is easily the best thing they’ve done (although the AoL half, while fairly pleasant, isn’t quite up to the level of Sing ‘Other People’).

their hippie jamz are fucking incredible live—the first 45 minutes of the show i saw like a year ago was seriously a great great show. then they did some campfire bullshit and i hated that. also their poppier songs sound too much like modest mouse, about whom i dont care

after listening to first album in car for a day: yeah, this is still just average

the first album is okay; very mellow, the kind of thing that I can put on at any time and be 100% assured that I will derive at least a little bit of pleasure from it. but the only song on there I really couldn’t live without is “Running, Returning” (especially after seeing it performed live, where its precariousness becomes much more apparent).

I don’t think they *had to*—at least I hope not. It was because they put out an album with Hamid Drake. But I don’t know if he did any songs with them because I walked out. When I left he was chillin in the lobby and I actually felt compelled to give him a hug.

While “New” New Folk may not be justified as good music in the fact that its original or creative it can be justified as good music for being fucking beautiful. For the same reason I will never stop listening to Iron and Wine I can never get tired of New Folk.

I might like them more if someone killed their bass player.
