as per sherburne’s column about “mouth to mouth”
audion—“mouth to mouth”
faze action—“in the trees” (c2 remix)
delia + gavin—“revelee” (carl craig remix)
shit robot—“wrong galaxy”
martin buttrich—“full clip”
cobblestone jazz—“india in me”
loco dice—“sorted”
beck—“cellphone’s dead” (villalobos remix)
any others i need to know about? best of the best only, people.
redshape-the playground (deep space mix) (this one is actual techno, ghettoey hats and all)
zander vt-dig your own rave (amazing deep drones)
audion-i gave you away
justin maxwell-get off the bed
I like this stuff...I’d like some e-dancer style basslines to come back, that’d be cool.
haha all of these are in the latest mix I posted up at my blog...
coincidentally it’s being repeated here till 3am GMT....sorry to hijack thread but it’s a live stream at http://www.rnl106.com/audio.html if you do want to check those tracks....
carry on!
i like most of this, but find ‘India in Me’ to be the most over-rated track of the past couple of months. Perhaps even more than FZ, which had it’s detractors... everyone likes India in Me, it seems, except me.
that and i hope that “the new thing” tag is for effect.
cosmic is as cosmic does

Pastaboys—Tribute and Limit
not really tho. but equally boring!
what are you on?
you might as well just cut to the chase and get some trance records.
i don’t think this stuff sounds like trance, mike
it’s funny ronan, i feel like the b-sides to all the records you posted are better than the a-sides ...
redshape—“playground (original mix)” (amazing post-revelee synth madness)
zander vt—“then & before” (redshape remix) (endless percolations)
either that or clone record shop has the sides flipped!
ok maybe the pastaboys are close to trance.
you might as well just cut to the chase and get some trance records.
i see what you did there
part of me would rather be buying new trance records instead of settling down into collecting italo + postpunk
i mean, at least it’s NEW and NOW
wow mnml isn’t cool NYMORE...
wait I have an idea...
EPIK MNML IS SO 2009
you might as well just cut to the chase and get some trance records.
stop trolling and suggest a route beyond this impasse
why is trance is an impasse, but techno isnt?
I find a lot of this stuff (I don’t mean like every record mentioned so far, just the general tendency) pretty damn boring too. ymmv.
i don’t think all of it is boring, i just don’t see what’s so friggin new about some of it.
there’s nothing so new about it—a lot of it sounds like the very 1st irdial-disc tracks (insync’s “storm” for example, is a dead-ringer for “india in me”)
but hey! there hasn’t been anything like irdial before or after until now, so why complain?
bodzin’s “cucuma” fits here, sarah goldfarb “homodiskotekus” (at least during second half synth riff), maybe florent “g-net” and I still say much pom pom goes here
(insync’s “storm” for example, is a dead-ringer for “india in me”)
between this and comparing de9 transitions to early-90s laurent garnier, i think you might need a hearing aid
will you be my hearing aid? i will be your tiresias, if you will be my cadmus.
i like that clip. what is that? it’s very bleepy, maybe not spacey / minimal / trancey enough for this discussion. this is not ame / deep bobbins we’re talking about, people.
I just figured out what this music is missing...

come on, mike, that is pretty much the lamest thing i have ever heard you say.
please don’t try to tell me that Ø or TG would be better if their music was more “african”.
Ohm/Null Set and TG were not lame ass attempts at dance music. Seriously, you are on some weak assed shit and I am calling you on it.
This is like bunko eurodisco for the 21st century.
the symbol for SI resistance units is Ω, not Ø
Ø is PHI, right?
i don’t know this bunko eurodisco stuff, maybe i should ask dan selzer about it.
OK so you don’t like the new carl craig sound. but you’re not going to tell me why, other than that it is “lame assed”, “weak assed” and lacks the proper amount of “africa”.
where then should i be pointing my beaky noise for TRUE DANCE GROOVES?
hey vahid, could you recommend anything that even resembles “mouth to mouth”?
also, put up ripperton’s 10a & sleeper thief’s full of you.
that faze action remix!
only 2 of those records are from the last 12 months. i have the lotterboys and i like it, too! i’ll check out ICAN, haven’t heard the new aaron carl but i’ll look for that too.
go ahead and burrow into the past if you want, though, i’ll be here with my trance records.
oh shit, that faze action remix is great.
there aren’t samples around the net with that beck villalobos remix? i need to hear...
http://www.phinnweb.org/sahko/history.html
The Hyperdelic Housers were to spawn the first underground label of Finland, Sähkö Recordings, whose central place was to be in Helsinki. During 1993 Sähkö (‘Electricity’) already published five 12“:s. Early 1994 saw the first Sähkö CD, Metri by Mika Vainio, recorded as Ø (pronounced ”ohm“). Before this, Mika had already published in 1991 the first Finnish techno album Mindprobe by Corporate 09 which then consisted of Vainio and Pertti Grönholm.
Anything else I can do for you, son?
The ø is used in the fictional language Bork Bork Bork.
MINI LOUDSPEAKER—0.5W / 8 ohm—Ø 50mm
^^ that means 8 ohms resistance through a wire with a diameter of 50 mm, different resistance measured with a thicker or thinner wire, right?
except mika vainio thought Ø was the same as ohm because he saw “ohm—Ø” all the time in his electronics manuals??
it’s cool, he studied microbiology or something right? i wouldn’t expect any better from a “soft” scientist.
Storm is nothing like India In Me
The ø is used in the real language Norwegian.
I forgot...all Shonky production stuff to thread...
what are you on
vahid might as well just cut to the chase and get some
hot tub “acid jazz” records
i’ve already got plenty of those
i was listening to this earlier in the week ... good times!
To return to the original thread premise:
Reynold—Intercity
Big big big big tune!
there aren’t samples around the net with that beck villalobos remix? i need to hear...
Such can be heard in the Villalobos Fabric 7th anniversary set that was posted on ILM.
Don’t have the link, but have been actually meaning to find it again in the last few days.
that faze action remix is a hell of a thing.
Isn’t this just *cough*
ketamine house with even less going on in the way of rhythmic interest/funk? or worse, prog-house with the openmindedness (for better or worse) replaced with strict purist references?
I dunno, I don’t mind some of the records being mentioned here, I don’t mind stuff that leans towards trance either frankly but I’m not getting moist about the idea of this sound dominating the ’07
(translation: me trusting ILM less & less for dahnce/electronic tips, real world carrying on regardless/oblivious, siegbran posting once or twice with the prole/non-hipster overview on things, nothing changing except fashion.)
how is any of the stuff above less rhythmically interesting than “cosmic sandwich” or “doppelwhipper”?
well, if those are thee touchstones of k-house (knew that’d get me into trouble) no, they’re not. I guess I associate the druggier end of villalobos with that (dubious) term... or Perlon, if it was a bit more melted by descending/doomy trance melodies perhaps. I find Gabriel Ananda pretty bland frankly. In general though this stuff is all getting way less percussive and more synth-led isn’t it? And it’s all ‘deeeeep’ synths, that ache quality but go nowhere. It’s reminding me of that zzz Tiefschwarz Fabric mix, maybe they were ahead of the curve!
I dunno, I won’t start hating on Acid Eiffel but I’m buggered if I can be bothered digging/reading/thinking about a whole new wave of this stuff, I simply can’t hear any creative potential in it.
as I’m not being useful here I’ll leave it except to say in between ame/deeeep bobbins, “spacy bleep techno”, neo-detroit and mnml-electrohouse I am all smoothed out and losing interest quick ;_;
ahead of the curve = mathew jonson + carl craig
isn’t “percussive” a dead end in and of itself? (see: soundmurderer + sk1, late autechre, etc)
also if you’re losing interest in electronic dance across the board—not just you don’t like this stuff, but you also don’t have a pet scene that you are repping for—it’s probably nt the music, it’s probably YOU
In general though this stuff is all getting way less percussive and more synth-led isn’t it? And it’s all ‘deeeeep’ synths, that ache quality but go nowhere.
this is absolutely right! but if it went somewhere, it would lose the ache quality and the deepness, right?
that’s sort of like saying “well i love free jazz, i just wish it had more structure”
I don’t know if things are getting less percussive though. How many people are making entire mixes of the simply synthy stuff?
A lot of mixes I hear are still very spectrum-covering—there’s some spacey synth tunes, some allusions to bumping house, some deep disco, some prickly Anja Schneider/Sleeperthief stuff, some druggy house Fuckpony/Tuning Spork stuff, some insane tribal Guido Schneider style stuff... amidst all of this some spacey synth stuff sounds great and not particularly all-dominating/monomaniacal.
I mean, yeah, everyone loved Ame’s “Rej” (the real “okay, this sound has arrived” moment), but everyone also loves the Villalobos remix of “The Sinner In Me”, including Ame!
And really it’s not like this is a new thing. These tunes are to 2007 as Superpitcher was to 2003/2004. People have been talking about “neo-trance” since 2002, and really it existed well before that—Hypercity is basically a Sasha & Digweed mix with more clicks and snaps.
There has always (well, throughout this decade) been a continuum of “smooth” trance/techno-ish stuff throughout this loose scene, just as there has been a continuum of screwy percussive stuff throughout the same period.
People get too focused on a slight sonic shift at one end or another and think it’s the end/beginning of everything. Those sonic shifts are interesting and worth talking about (before mike t rushes in to colonise my argument) but not in such an all-or-nothing manner.
Also, let us not forget that Shonky is hot hot hot:
ihttp://myspace-484.vo.llnwd.net/00558/48/46/558606484_l.jpg
Oh well, click on the link.
Shades of Hank Rollins.

I claim this arguement for Spain!

ahead of the curve = mathew jonson + carl craig touche =)
isn’t “percussive” a dead end in and of itself? (see: soundmurderer + sk1, late autechre, etc) hmmm, I’m not sure I’m coming at this from an entirely “idm-microhouse don’t die yet!” angle...
if it went somewhere, it would lose the ache quality and the deepness, right? it would?? isn’t this just a lame & easy shortcut? isn’t like tons of detroit techno achy/deep AND busy/banging?
I’m sure it is a lot of me w/r/t losing interest. I’ll definitely still shill for Mobilee, Random Dubstep tunes, other bits & bobs... oddly enough there isn’t really one! new! scene that’s completely flicking my bean right now, but dilettante dabbling still turns up enough to keep me interested... I’ll likely stumble on new mix/label/tune that refreshes my perspective on it all again tomorrow, it’s usually the way!
I’m trying not to focus on this slight sonic shift really, or ascribe too wide a meaning to it. I’m simply a little frustrated that across the continuum so much of it seems to be chasing towards the same goal now (and yes, it’s a little boring to me, maybe only in isolation but still). I need to find more of the stuff that isn’t living in this niche (like The Field album! which I haven’t heard yet tho’ people complaining about it’s “Ableton-ness” makes suspect I’ll enjoy it, if that = ragged & underproduced).
I dunno, I’ve been digging old funk and soul recently, so maybe I am overdue my “it was all so much better in xxxx I don’t get anything out of the new stuff only listen to old music now” jaded old man moment :/
I was thinking of making a “Now That’s What I Call Percussive Minimal” comp before my computer died (again!). It had stuff like the Loco Dice remix of Daniel Taylor’s “MORD” and Guido Schneider’s “Channel One” and Sleeperthief’s “Full Of You” on it. Basically a lot like the Andre Galluzzi Berghain 01 mix but maybe a bit housier/moister overall. I still totally dig that style.
that loco dice remix = nu-trance I
I
less floaty ethereal minor key melodies, more rigid inhuman stomp plz!
for me the #1 statement of percussive minimal is locodice+villalobos “green + blue” mix comp on cocoon ... but you can kind of hear the move towards synthier stuff towards the end of villalobos disc where he gets into the swinging acid sound with that woody / dr motte / mystic bill sequence
i am actually kind of predicting yet ANOTHER acid house 303 revival this year, if stuff like “india in me” is any indication ...
also tim, i see you are a cheekbones man. is there any sort of gay analogue to “legs man / ass man / tits man”??
I don’t know if things are getting less percussive though. How many people are making entire mixes of the simply synthy stuff?

This is OTM, especially re the whole “deep house/minimal” thing but I have been thinking about this the last few days and I genuinely think this psychedelic house/techno could be quite a big deal and a good antithesis (ie not that dissimilar) to minimal...which probably needs to happen.
scratch my above comment. i like the aril brikha on kompakt better.
wait so are psychedelic house/techno and spacey bleep techno the same thing?
does that estroe record fit? if so, i think my favorite is that.
this one is nice too. the a-side is probably the most psychedelic bleepy neo-trance this side of that radio slave remix of jamie anderson. a bunch of these tunes are like “mouth to mouth” it’s true. couldn’t imagine them all together, but they are very effective when used alongside other stuff.
thank you for the radio slave jamie anderson heads up, josh. i also like modena on the rekids website
very interested in the style of music on this thread
David K—Mayann [Cocoon] fits right in here
i haven’t heard that first one you mention, but that Aril Brikha single is okay at best...compared to a lot of his other (especially older) stuff. (Though about that single: Bergain is really quite nice. Winter is just...not...that...interesting. Berghain would be even sweeter with some quality alto female vocal samples over it). (Reminder to self).
In terms of the regular discussion: India in Me just isn’t that good, though it doesn’t sound like what v says it does. I’ve said it before in other threads— the love for this track baffles me over and over again. And I like some other Cobblestone Jazz.
On a similar note, Mouth to Mouth = If I wanted a bad handjob, I could get it from a cheap hooker.
heh.
“berghain” is great! i think i like it so much because of the way it rubs against everything else coming out right now.
i think what’s also interesting is when this stuff strays from 4/4 territory and gets steppy like “space break” or the last few monolake releases (polygon_cities and the “plumbicon” single). the live in osaka “plumbicon” version fits pretty well with the general vibe of this thread.
i’m surprised no one has mentioned sleeparchive yet. or soundstream. “love jam” is a jam.
has anyone heard the ripperton on planet e yet?
Also, to say that this is bunko eurodisco for the 21st century is just fucking stupid. If that’s what yr looking for, you could always listen to ZOMBI. who can be fucking awesome despite their bunko nature.
one thing i’ve noticed about these tracks is that a lot of them lack claps or snares or use them very sparingly. it’s like someone decided to clean the cluttered minimal plate and reduce by elongation and rhythmic disorientation with lots of bubbly mids and lows.
(sorry i am posting so much and so confusingly to this thread. i was at a bruce nauman exhibition all afternoon today and it did my head in.)
Also, to say that this is bunko eurodisco for the 21st century is just fucking stupid
I think you are missing my point. Read this:
http://www.amazon.com/Turn-Beat-Around-Secret-History/dp/0571211941
When you get to the Eurodisco section and reference it with the earlier section regarding disco’s roots in R&B you will understand what I am getting it. It is appropriate.
Yr otm re cobbbelstone jazz and brikha’s new kompakt record.
Re: http://www.discogs.com/release/865485
More Jupiter Jazz and less thinly disguised trance plz. Everytime you listen to this crap The Interstellar Fugitives kill a kitten.
“also tim, i see you are a cheekbones man. is there any sort of gay analogue to ”legs man / ass man / tits man“?? ”
I think it’s pretty much crotch/ass/pecs&arms most of the time.
i am partial to cheekbones though.
how do you judge a person’s crotch?
josh was that the one at berkeley? is it great?
i wanted to go this weekend but it didn’t happen ...
“how do you judge a person’s crotch? ”
It depends on what kind of adjudication rights you’re granted.
What is UR’s position on crotch judging?
thinly disguised pants?
“this crotch is coded for those who know”
“mouth to mouth” seems an odd one out here, it’s a lot more aggressive & distinctive (a good thing).
boomkat’s review of new Aril Brikha,
Hardcore Transmat geeks of course might be up in arms about this twelve, but the partial salvation comes on the neatly turned out shapethrowing panorama bar tribute “Berghain”. Opt for this side if in a tight corner, simply grin and bear the gloss and sheen of its all gone pete tong directed ibizan headache that is “Winter”. Massive of course, but what a pity—one is left mulling what might have been, be certain Groove La Chord this is not.
:O :D
they’re kind of right, it is an incredibly commercial sounding tune, but it (Winter) is also a total earworm. I like it a lot.
so much handwringing over that tune...what is so fucking wrong with trance
it has stinky neighbours
I’ve read Shapiro’s book, Burl. And it is VERY BIASED AGAINST any and all EuroDisco. He treats Moroder like some sort of techno-fascist geek, and totally downplays the importance of ‘I Feel Love’ and other such tracks, dismissing them as soulless and empty without really backing that assertion up with anything other than, “Those fucking trashy Europeans and their syntehsizers, why aren’t they more black?” The sections of that book on european disco are the most thoroughly disappointing.
Thus, your point is still fucking stupid, imo.
next, people will be knocking alec r costandinos:(
I didn’t really see Shapiro being too biased about Eurodisco. He described how funk/soul fans and musicians needed an easy scapegoat in the disco era, and eurodisco fit the bill. He describes all the reasons people hated Eurodisco, but that eurodisco was a step forward in making music that was more robotic/cyborg oriented than anything earlier.
Also he is really down on I Feel Love? In the book he calls it the perfect soul record, as powerful and complex as anything by Ray Charles, Marvin Gaye, and Al Green! His point is that it encapsulats the then-fascination with detachement/submission/anonymous sex/unreality/non-human so well, and does it all with this eerie etheral sexuality that was very alien at the time. I don’t know what you are looking for him to say?
Poor derailed thread ...
I think the thing with Peter Shapiro’s book is that he describes things in what for others would be pejorative terms, but which in his own aesthetic are actually positive. This struck me most in the stuff on Hi-NRG. It makes it a weird read. I’ve posted this before, but here’s him on the radio giving us the roots of Eurodisco. It’s great. http://wfmu.org/playlists/shows/12195
Anyway, carry on ...
I didn’t really see Shapiro being too biased about Eurodisco.
He wasn’t and he made a distinction between the stuff that was good, Moroder and Cerrone for example, vs schlock like Frank Farian produced stuff like Boney M. Frank Farian also had hits in the late 80’s with this band:
http://www.discogs.com/release/566577
I will give him credit for this tho. This is completely bonkers:
boney m had some jams
ouch that “jupiter jazz” comment burl. that song changed my life no lie.

the nauman show made matthew barney finally click for me if that’s saying anything vahid. a crucial show if you want to know what else was going on in the usa in the late 60s aside from pop or are interested in post-minimalist process type art (crucial for understanding the ableton set? only time will tell). well curated, very nice space in that museum. i will go back.
actually nauman kind of brings together beuys and rauschenberg which is really saying something.
that Craig Faze Action remix is amazing...just heard it last night...(at home)
agreed on that ronan.
also, i just re-read the eurodisco chapters, and while he isn’t totally biased against eurodisco, it’s pretty hard to say that he is really into ‘I Feel Love’ (while saying it’s a great soul record, he also calls it “sexless” and “campy,” which are...well, negative). additionally, he sums the section up by saying that much eurodisco “rings rather hollow.” which shows some *gasp* bias.
that said, after flipping through again, shapiro does frame things in rather pejorative terms, so my previous reading was a bit distorted.
let’s stop talking about disco
if we can all agree w/ mike that this music is as un-disco and un-african as it gets, can we at least agree not to judge it in terms of 30 year-old music?
i’m not judging it in such a way, v. that was bur1, peter shapiro’s lackey.
one last: spacy very italo house by Equip, track available on Jazz Funk Greats. really awesome earworm of a thing, that track.
Trees, I’m not going to prolong the argument, but sexless and hollow are some of the best qualities of eurodisco for me!
it’s like david bowie
you just prolonged it, and so i will do the same: i don’t find eurodisco sexless OR hollow, at least not in the way that Shapiro means. so let’s let bygones be bygones on this one.
that and david bowie is only sometimes sexless and hollow, lfam.

is trance bullshit ?
im sure,i lke good trancy music
because is the music good than it makes no difference,if trance or not trance!
TRANCE Music can be really good if the compostion makes sense!.
All these bombasstic synthsizer have so much power when its really on fire !
But if its only for a progress with no sense than it can be so a “stoopidboring bullshit.”
I really fucked up often when im in a club and djs playing only halfbeat basslines, you know what i mean
its like
humpa humpa humpa.humpa umpa umpa umpa umpa dede dede dededed
it can be really a funny thing,,when ark or others do it like this(sense of humor!)
But if its pathetic than it can be so horrorble&make people tired.
We still live in a world of druguser, and you never will listen to those kind of tracks when you at home!
If you`re on drugs your body&mindsytem is complete on a different level.
so is the music good you don`t need drugs to be on differnt level or higher level.
Is the music really good and you are on “Draks ! So you will you can fly in
”Space whatever,wherever............................its amazing how the music than feels.!
here my toptrancehits forever !
