Tony Oxley: The Advocate [#7618]
One of the most important musical partnerships in English Free Improvisation was the duo of Tony Oxley and Derek Bailey. Their long standing friendship began as early as 1963 with the group Joseph Holbrooke (including composer/bassist Gavin Bryars) and lasted over forty years. These recordings were created in the studio in 1975 and catch them at their peak. Also included is Oxley’s touching tribute to Bailey, a dynamic new piece for electronics and percussion recorded live at the recent Bailey tribute concert at the London Barbicon, 2006. Exciting and vibrant improvisations—never before released—by two pioneers of the genre.

I bought it out of Sound 323 last week, so it does exist. Absolutely marvellous, too.

hey dudes on this thread, what are your favorite oxley/bailey collaborations (either duo or larger or whatever)? i’d have to go with “the baptised traveller,” i never tire of that record. any other recommendations?

i have yet to find/afford ‘soho suites’ but deeply want to: oxley’s credit on it starts “Percussion, Wood, Ring Modulator...”

it’s a truly brilliant piece of work, but the best stuff is on the 1995 disc. their interplay uses the townshend/moon relationship as a jumping-off point, and takes it to unimaginable extremes.

the earlier disc certainly has its moments, to be sure. but it doesn’t have the insane tension/dynamics of the later work.

my fave oxley work is with bill dixon: vade mecum vols 1 & 2, berlin abbozzi, and the trio with cecil taylor. for whatever reason, his playing takes on an entirely different character with dixon.
