it’s hard to address the question. i don’t see what the bands have in common. perhaps one thread on each band where you don’t ‘get’ why people like them would be a good move.

Ryan Adams I have never got. Tom waits I’ve kind of got in the last three years and can totally understand the appeal. Radiohead I’ve always grudgingly admired but never really liked. The Stone Roses I adored and though I still did in a “never need to listen to them ever again” way, until I actually did put the first album on the other day and it struck me as being pretty fucking dull. Love Fools Gold still, though.

i love tom waits – his narratives may deal in well-worn clichés at times but he frames them enormously well, I think at his best he was very aware of how familiar these characters and stories were, and it was the way he took this street folklore and made it convincingly human which was so special. he has a great deal of sympathy for the people in his songs. plus, great beats! though the experimental side isn’t everything I love about him, my favourite waits songs are where he waxes philosophical or romantic (‘time’, ‘blue valentine’). didn’t much like either of his last two albums though – I think he’s finally tipped into self-parody and pointless retreading of old work, though he had a good innings I guess.

the others, I’m as baffled as you are. stone roses really are the worst of the worst.

nb, i love waits’ voice but can totally understand why people would hate it, kind of like bjork or joanna newsom.

I don’t like Tom Waits. Never really bothered with Radiohead but I don’t hate them. Stone Roses are inoffensive but annoyingly over-rated. Never heard Ryan Adams and will never ever EVER be able to hear/see his name without thinking of Bryan Adams first.

never got tom waits, and from what i’ve heard, no idea in what way what he’s talking about is familiar! if anything that’s why i’m not sold. like the song they use for ‘the wire’ but his version is the least good.

I’ve never heard anything by Ryan Adams. Tom Waits has an okay attitude, but sounds a bit too much self-consciously arty. Radiohead are wanky. Stone Roses have a couple of nice tunes you can dance to, but they also sound British in a bad way.

Stone Roses are basically like The Gap Band or Kool and the Gang or something, as long as DJs keep playing that stuff it’ll keep living.

The one thing I noticed when I moved up north is that the The Jam badges on 14 year old kids’ backpacks get replaced with Stone Roses ones.

I think The Stone Roses had about four really wonderful songs, about four really wonderful jams, and the rest is all myth.
