pisces OTM. he’s a self-confessed wanker; and sure, he fucked up a whole heap of shit. but ultimately he’s a fucking legend, he’s been a much bigger influence on my life than i think even i realise, and i think he rocks bells. i’ve had the privilege of meeting him a couple of times and he’s just a fascinating, witty, top guy.

Former Factory boss fights cancer
Anthony Wilson, the music mogul behind some of Manchester’s most successful bands, has been diagnosed with cancer.
The Salford-born entrepreneur, who managed New Order, Joy Division and the Happy Mondays, underwent emergency surgery last month to remove a kidney.
The 56-year-old, who launched Factory records and the Hacienda nightclub, is due to start a chemotherapy course at Manchester’s Christie Hospital.
The disease was found during a routine visit to the doctor.
Two minutes into his check-up the doctor identified that something was “seriously wrong” with his right lung.
After having the lung drained a scan revealed that his right kidney was “completely consumed” by cancer.
It was then removed at the Manchester Royal Infirmary and he is now set for two five-day treatments at the Christie.
Mr Wilson said: “It was a bit of a surprise to find out I had cancer because there is no family history.
”All my family tend to have heart attacks in the middle of the night aged in their 70s, 80s and 90s.
“I wasn’t too upset when I was told the news. I just think you have to go with it and I see it as another step in life’s adventure.”
Mr Wilson reserved particular praise for the staff who treated him after his diagnosis.
“The sheer quality of the care provided to me by the nursing staff and doctors has been fantastic,” he said.
“It’s funny that everyone has a moan about the NHS except for people who actually use it.”
Mr Wilson, who is a presenter on BBC Radio Manchester, rose to fame after he co-founded Factory Records and the Hacienda nightclub which was famously known as the birthplace of the “Madchester” music phenomenon.
The semi-fictional story of both the music label and the historic club was told in the 2002 film, 24 Hour Party People.

many years ago an ex-girlfriend tapped a random bloke in the street on the shoulder and said ‘excuse me you don’t know where the Corn Exchange is do you?’ the bloke turned round and it was him. she said he couldn’t have been nicer or more helpful for a complete stranger. always stayed with me that.

i guess it must vary from person to person; i went in december (to visit said uncle) and it was none of those things — the cleanness thing demonstrably so.
i kind of work with health people most days so i don’t need to say they’re lovely. some are, some are not.
I still think “It’s funny that everyone has a moan about the NHS except for people who actually use it” is largely OTM, well said Anthony!

Oh yeah, and the NHS has been well cool any time I’ve been near it.
He’s a cantankerous old bastard with an almost childlike enthusiasm for music (and Manchester!) somehow intermingled with a brusque, sharply funny cynicism. I’m sure those qualities will help him get better quickly.
I just tend to think he will make it through this, can’t explain why. One of my friends who doesn’t come to this board tried to break the news to me and that’s about all I could say. I didn’t want to sound flippant or nonchalant about it, but my gut says he’s going to be fine.

me & my brother were making a joke the other week about recording a song called “wake up tony wilson, you’re dead”, cos we couldn’t remember the last time we’d seen him on tv. now feel very guilty. :(
I’d still think he’d appreciate it as an ironic tribute though!
