The little piano line in Children is the best thing on either record, but the breathy girl on encore un fois is plastisexy and the bubbling beats sash puts together are more complex and interesting without being wanky so. And it’s makes me want to dance more.

So encore un fois gets my vote.

i liked both at the time, maybe ‘children’ a bit more—but would agree with johnney b now. the only track by either i liked tho.

‘Children’ seemed to popularise the trance-pop trend of the low synth bassline sound placed just after and between each of the four bassdrums per bar (see also BBE’s ‘Seven Days And One Week’). Altho I’m sure quite a few if not many european trance tracks had been doing this for a while before I can’t think of any that charted.

did anyone else, who was at school round this time, have their french lessons interupted by shouts of “encore une fois!” every few minutes? this happened like every lesson for about six months at my school.

‘Encore Un Fois’ possibly popularised ‘Hardbag’ more as a subgenre, being such a big hit although ‘Insomnia’ and a few other things had already been minor hits by that point. The enormous pizzicato-strings+organ hook was a big UK & Euro house trend of the mid 90s, largely thanks to Rollo i reckon.

‘insomnia’ was probably the biggest record of that winter, man.

got to number three in october ’96, but with ‘born slippy’ was probably the most ubiquitous rereleased dance record of the year.

it’s been replaced by things like Cascada’s ‘Truly Madly Deeply’ i guess. i don’t know what to call stuff like that or Ultrabeat’s ‘Pretty Green Eyes’ now—not Scouse House. it’s all pretty bad.
