On POTP last Sunday they were doing the Top 20 w/e 29 Nov 67. “I Can See For Miles” was at #18 and clearly seventeen places too low, especially considering all the MoR muck higher up.

We were listening to that in the car on the way home. Those ballads sounded at least 5 years out of time, eh?

It says something that only two out of that top ten were actually uptempo records (“Baby Now That I’ve Found You” and “Hello Goodbye”).

I hadn’t listened to “Baby Now That I’ve Found You” and it sounded more lumbering than I remembered. “Build Me Up Buttercup” is still my favourite, I think.

I do like it still but I understand why others might find it a bit plodding.

Don’t get me wrong, “Baby Now That I’ve Found You” is still wonderful, it was just a few BPM slower than I remembered. I wonder if pub DJs play it a bit fast sometimes.

I love “Hello Goodbye” a lot too. It’s quite an odd single isn’t it? It’s essentially nothing but chorus, and then the coda.

previous Top 20 and that week’s new Top 20, he was apt to put in his own lovable bias; thus if his beloved Iron Maiden or Def Leppard had had a new entry, cue the Hallelujah Chorus blast – usually accompanied by Freeman solemnly intoning “The miracle has occurred”—and if there were some dreadful MoR or novelty tack at number one we would get Reg Presley’s “Awww NOOOO!” from “I Can’t Control Myself.”

You know, this is the sort of stuff JK and Joel aspire to, bless them. But they can’t do it like “Ah I know you don’t agree, just laugh anyway”

Or else they would throw a strop, like DLT did when he had to play “Complete Control.”

oh, and it’s “Petra Haden” btw. Fine album! Only one I ever got after hearing a track on an Uncut CD!
