1997 was coincidentally one of the shittiest years for hip-hop ever. Half a good Biggie album, half a good Wu-Tang album, half a good Jay-Z album and some pretty good Missy and Puffy singles.

If it wasn’t for “It’s All About The Benjamins” and Funcrusher Plus, you could pretty much just call it a wash.

In retrospect the album I probably listened to most in 1997 was either Roni Size New Forms or that Sounds of the Asian Underground comp.

MJG’s solo album was that year, I think thats really underrated. Three-6’s world domination was that year. No Way Out is good but I’m not gonna bother defending that because really its trife territory. Camp Lo’s Uptown Saturday Night was ’97. Ghetto D. Twista’s Adrenaline Rush. Mystikal’s Unpredictable. B-Legit’s Hemp Museum. That Rakim comeback album. I haven’t listened to Trick Daddy’s True Story in ages so i have no idea if it was good.

I think the four big Houston albums (Mike Jones, Slim Thug, Paul Wall, Chamillionaire) adds up to one Reasonable Doubt.

The coke-rap stuff (Dipset, Jeezy, Clipse) didn’t have better singles than No Limit, but had better albums.

Considering its guest list — packed with enough star power (El DeBarge, Snoop Dogg, Nate Dogg, Peter Gunz, Hi-C, AMG, and 2nd II None) to fill a “Wrestlemania” card — Rhythm-al-ism promises more than it actually delivers. Its cleverest moments (“Medley for a ‘V’ (The Pussy Medley)”) address colloquialisms for genitalia and all the wonderful things it’s good for. “Down, Down, Down,” “I Useta Know Her,” and “No Doubt” (rhymes with: “I got something for your mouth”) are plain nasty. I don’t know about pop, but ’96 was a very solid year for hip hop and it was the last year jungle (hello jump up) really mattered.

I admit to liking the gentrified cocktail drum’n’bass fusion hoo-ha to a mild extent (though jungle ca. ’94 > all), so I’m biased. But uh hey J Majik? Jonny L? Photek? The aforementioned Torque?

Some of that stuff is good, but it feels like it all was consciously trying to distance itself from jungle (hence the name change as well.)

...Sinister is the only album that came out in 1997 that came even close to having a real long-lasting effect on my life.
