Ok. I really need your help here, ILM. I didn’t know where else to turn. I have a serious gap in my memory. I tried to come back to ILM to ask you guys to help me figure out a song title.. but you were gone! I managed to find this secret outpost of ILM and have come to pose my question before you. Help me ILM, you’re my only hope.
I can’t remember the title/artist of a particular song. In fact i can’t remember anything about the song really.. Except that i think its in 3/4 time. It guitar driven. Alternative/rock from the late 90s or early 2000s. I seem to remember it being sort industrial rocky.. or droney.. but I don’t know. I think the band was a three piece.. north american.
I remember no portion of the lyrics, song title or artist name.
Can anyone help?
also, is there any way to search ILM archives right now? that may help.
Clockhammer?
Admittedly, I’m kind of shooting in the dark here...
Rush?
thought this was gonna be kenan posting from the dateline nbc van
i expect every shot to be in the dark on this one. i understand it is extremely vague. this is the source of my dilemma.
it’s neither rush nor clockhammer.
the song is not proggy at all.. i think thats why its interesting to me.. it was straight up rock in what i recall to be 3/4 time
NICKELBACK.
oh dear god
I told you, BUILT TO SPILL, VELVET WALTZ
Except it wasn’t a single or anything afaik.
Was it used in a teen comedy?
ummm i’m not sure if it was used in a teen comedy
How mainstream should we be thinking?
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rock_trio ? (there’s a list below the article, but it’s very short)
also, The Presidents Of The USA are a rock trio
Maybe “Sex and Candy”, “Closing Time” or “The Way”?
not totally mainstream.. no nirvana or anything.. but i was in highschool when i heard them so they can’t be that obscure either.
i think they may have had a few minor hits. i heard the song via mp3 most likely, so i don’t know how widespread the airplay was.
i’m located in ontario canada, but i dont recall them being specifically regional to the area, or even canada, though i can’t exclude it.
nothing pops out at me from that wikipedia article. i might be totally wrong on the trio thing.. the 3/4 thing im more sure of.. thats what prompted this.
also note that i was into stuff like nine inch nails and white zombie when i was younger, so it probably spoke somewhat to those tastes.
it was quite aggresive. tempo was a fair speed
it’s definitly not sex and candy or closing time.. but probably around the same time period
what’s “the way” ?
Rush?
Nomeansno? (er... did they have minor hits?)
you can search ilx archives via google, fwiw.
not The Presidents Of The USA either..
not Nomeansno
maybe its Rush..
ITS NOT RUSH!!!
Hey man, nice shot in the dark.
let me say, i do appriciate everyones help on this. ilm still kicks ass i guess.
i’ve been looking into alot of canadian bands, havent found anything yet.. so good chance they were american.. 75% chance id say
And it’s not Built To Spill?
nope not built to spill either
Sebadoh?
triumph? (lol)
not sebadoh... not triumph
right now im gonna start placing odds at around 3% that this is a completely false memory and no such song exists...
Machines of Loving Grace?
(Might help if you let us know which of the previous suggestions were closest, BTW)
not Machines of Loving Grace.. but thats probably getting close to the vibe it had. darker, aggressive.. i dont remember it being silly and gothy though..
can anyone help me remember this alterna-rock 90s band i’m trying to think of (it may even be the same band astroblaster is thinking of). i think they had something to do w/the smashing pumpkins. i believe d’arcy mighta sang on a song or one of the members of SP produced it. and the chorus had a word that at the time (in highschool) i had to look up to figure out what it meant. i can’t remember said word, but i feel like it meant something like being content. and i think there were robots in the video.
jaxon i think it was the band Catherine
SISTER MACHINE GUN?
(“Bound For the Floor” was for Jaxon—does ‘copacetic’ ring a bell?)
Answer to original question: Hüsker Dü with “She Floated Away”
Astroblaster, write and perform the song and then see who sues you!
(Um, sister machine gun intended for astroblaster, BTW)
Sugar? Something from Beaster perhaps?
ding ding ding!! Tape Store wins. thanks bro.
but that’s not the video i was thinking of. maybe i’m confusing two bands. what about the smashing pumkins connection? and robots?
catherine was a band with d’arcy singing one song, at least. they had a good video, from what I remember.
“copacetic” was by a band called Local H, and might be the song in question in this thread
not sister machine gun
i think they were more one hit wondery... maybe 2 mediocre albums all together
ive also been surfing allmusic going through Similar Artists, Influenced Bys and Followers.. still dont have it.
what the hell is wrong here. whats the missing piece
its not by Local H either
You need Jesus in your life, first and foremost.
stabbing westward is probably the closest band to the vibe i can think of. lets recap.. the song was a single, i think.. and im so sure it was in 3/4
i estimate it around 1999–2002
Chevelle.
Filter?
Some awful dirge on the Helmet best of comp?
Deadsy?
Orgy?
prong?
jackyll?
den of thieves?
i mother earth?
shotgun messiah?
sons of freedom? (not a trio)
did the lead singer have an annoyingly hight pitched voice?
Unwound would rock a waltz
wait, was there a chainsaw involved:

none of the above bands,
however “did the lead singer have an annoyingly hight pitched voice?” rang a bell... maybe.. what did you have in mind with this?
Shudder to Think?
Smashing Pumpkins?
Rush?
not Shudder to Think
not smashing pumpkins..
hmmm rush.. you know.. it just might be.... ITS NOT RUSH
they werent as big as S&P and younger than RUSH
Gravity Kills, perhaps?
“my name is jonas” by weezer meets some of the criteria. except for not being a trio. and coming out about 5 years before when you’re talking about. and not sounding “industrial.” and you’d probably remember if it was weezer. so probably not.
it IS in 3/4, tho.
Maybe something by Deftones?
deftones would be close to the vibe and time,
my name of jonas has the right timing for sure, not it though,
also, don’t think its gravity kills, i’ll make sure
Is it Econoline Crush?
orgy and deadsy, econoline crush would be close too
in fact im gonna double check on EC
can’t find what im looking for with EC. they didnt fuck with 3/4 did they?
filter would be close too.. but i dont think its them
mmm i found a good remix of hey man nice shot on my playlist that i had forgotten about.. its got jazz horns
just an update on my searching on the net.. i still havent turned up anything at all... but yet im still pretty sure this song existed and was awesome. think rock waltz
just imagine how much fun it will be when we think of it and find that half of my statements are contradictory and you guys can all flame me. oh it will be grand... or if we figure out that its RUSH
Have you checked the X-Files soundtrack?
its not from the score.. i checked Songs in the Key of X and Fight the Future soundtracks.. doesnt appear to be those. any particular track you were thinking of?
hmmmm maybe the verses were in 3/4 the choruses in 4/4 . i dont specifically remember, but this may be the case
Is it Rush?
“any particular track you were thinking of?”
No I’ve tried to repress that I ever heard it.
Haha I remember that video. That guy hurts so much inside.
HAHAHAHA
Coolz444 (3 days ago)
these guys are good, but H.I.M. are my all-time fave band. if you havent heard their music, then i highly recommend checkin them out, or just by simply youtubing them.
EForgrove (3 months ago)
eve 6 is a beastly band, they’re musics awesome
hmmm... industrial, dirgy, dark, Stabbing Westward vibe... in 3/4 time, 1999–2002 time period....
Sounds like a dead ringer for (and someone mentioned the band above) “Seeing Red” by Chevelle if you ask me. Especially if you would have said ‘Tool-lite’ to describe the song.
Seriously though, check that song out, it just might be the one.
good thinking re: Chevelle
here is video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qQuLMRP5qwU
1. i would be killing myself if i spent the last week obsessing over an eve6 song.. no. no it’s not eve6
2. chevelle’s really close too, but alas this is not it. i checked it out when it was first mentioned. good track though
Is it V.A.S.T.?
me and my friends really liked chevelle’s “Mia”.. probably around the same time as we digged this mystery song. BTW none of my friends have any idea what the hell im talking about either.. i totally grilled them
i thought V.A.S.T right away too. but i couldnt find the song. i will reinvestigate.. do you know if they/he had any with the 3/4 timing ?

good track though
(sorry — my Chevelle-loving acquaintances look like that...really)
the toadies liked to use 3/4 and 6/8 a lot. ‘i come from the water’ is in 6/8 and so is ‘backslider’. ‘possum kingdom’ had a bunch of different time signatures, too.
vahid already said prong, but did you check that out? i’m pretty sure they did some non-4/4 stuff.
i’ll do a full sweep of prong tommorow, but i doesnt seem to ring the right bell
i was also thinking placebo sorta fits the bill, but couldnt find the song amongst their stuff
veruca salt?
hey thar, is it Cyclefly?
also, perhaaaps.. God Lives Underwater, and i will second some investigation re: the Toadies.
Sense Field are too pussy-ass for this, right? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=s__QUKSWrK0
It sounds like you need BUZZ BALLADS.

for some reason I am thinking Filter tho I don’t know jack about 3/4 time.
“thought this was gonna be kenan posting from the dateline nbc van”
this made my side hurt
Seconding the toadies as a possibility.
I bet this was my anthem for a week circa 2001 (WARNING: Bad Language/hair, etc.)
Yo dude is it “Toxicity” by System of a Down?
It is in 3/4.
not puddle of mudd or system of a down
still gonna investigate toadies and prong when i get home from work, but neither of those sound right
are you fucking with us now?
Toadies had a bunch of weird time sig songs, I think “Tyler” was in 3/4.
I keep reading this thread title as “a desperate cry for help from former wilmer”

no im not fuckign with you guys.. the only possibilty is that this memory is completely false, and such a song never existed. but i still refuse to believe i’ve reduced my brain to such a terrible state...
so its definatley more mainstream than some mathrock stuff like shotmaker or three penny opera or something?
I FUCKING HAVE IT
it came to me all of a sudden on the drive home from work. let me tell you guys. i can finally sleep.
because this thread was so much fun, i wont reveal right away, and instead allow for one more round of guesses, with all new clues, based on facts and not my apparently ridiculous memory.
1. They are canadian
2. the song had a video (probably never saw mtv though, only muchmusic)
3. the verses have some nine inch nailsy synths and 3/4 drums, then guitars come in for prechorus and chorus, male vocals, looks like a 4 piece in the video.
4. the narrowed down year is 2001
5. i can’t find them on allmusic.com, so i guess that makes them obscure, in an underfunded canadian band from 6 years ago sorta way
6. seems they did have major canadian label support though
actually now that i think about it i did pretty good on remembering shit about this track.. not too many of my clues were hugely off.
anyway, i leave this open for a little bit, then i’ll dissappoint you with actually revealing the track.. cuz its really not mindshatteringly awesome.. just fucking fantastic for me because of the nostalgia and what not..
Well done!
Look, I think we’ve all shown pretty clearly that we don’t kno(are Rush on allmusic?)
haha.. its SUBDIVISIONS by RUSH!
no. offer still stands in case anyone wants a final stab, ill post when i come back home later tonight
project wyze? finger 11? glueleg? stabbing westward?
ooooohhhh glueleg.. good one. it though of them early on to, but didnt pan out. finger 11s pretty good too, for that sort of music, and they are from right around these parts. not them though. project wyze.. i just remember them sucking, not them. and not stabbing westward either
p.s they are on allmusic.. but hard to find, explanation comes later
zuckerbaby?
tea party?
here goes:
COPYRIGHT—ROCK MACHINE
who the fuck are these guys? ahh canadian music... our record industry make its so easy to forget about under developed artists.. but you can’t evade the capture of a determine seeker and youtube.

thanks, everyone, for all the help. it was GREATLY appreciated.
you have redeemed my faith in this glorious forum
tool-lite indeed!
I don’t hate the verses.
worst viral marketing trick ever
worst band name since co.uk
(Are you from Ottawa, grady?)
nope.
if you’re asking because i brought up shotmaker and three penny opera, its because shotmaker came through tucson az when i was in high school and me and all my friends got into them for about six years afterwards.
2 things I know about Copyright: the singer was from the legendary band Slow; that first Circle C album was in every used cd shop in Canada for a few years
