I just got one of these things for Christmas as a gift; what are some of your favorite uses of a delay pedal?
it might not be the best, but ‘reptile’ by the church displays a very obvious use of one
You could do a LOT worse than The Cure—From The Edge Of The Deep Green Sea (during the solo)
Or you could take a listen to Blur’s album ’13’ (specifically, Bugman, 1992, Battle, Caramel, Trimm Trabb). Sadly I’m no longer welcome to publicise that album on ILX after an infamous ‘song-by-song review incident’ a few months back. :-(
“Where the Streets Have No Name” is obvious and sort of insufferable, but no less essential.
lol louis, we luvs u
A lot of the U2 catalogue actually, besides obvious things like “Streets.”
I think the first time I ever heard a delay pedal in use and realized what I was hearing was Pink Floyd’s “Run Like Hell.”
Reich/Metheny’s Electric Counterpoint anyone?
lets get some durutti column up in this area son
Also Frippertronics.
“i’m in love with a german filmstar” by the passions
st. marie: piano magic
Lyres—She Pays the Rent
Boris’ album Flood has an opening soundscape of uber-delay action.
Les Savy Fav: The Sweat Descends

Not as much as you might think. MWP is playing most of that straight up with a slight echo return.
slowdive
did someone mention the durutti column? why, i think they did. let’s mention them again. and then some more.
A Flock of Seagulls—“I Ran”
The Chameleons—“Swamp Thing”
ah, swamp thing: the official grimly anthem of the year.
IIRC there’s one truly great example of guitar delay near the beginning of the 7“ of new order’s ”temptation“, which isn’t repeated at any point again throughout the song. but my memory could be playing tricks on me. i’ll dig it out and check.
First Disco Inferno single (Entertainment/Arc In Round).
Every single fucking solo experimental soundscape guitarist that I’ve ever seen.
Has it got stereo out (2 1/4“ jacks)? If so, the best use for it is in a feedback loop. At the moment I’ve got a cheapy Behringer one running into a ring modulator on output one, back though the input then out to a desk on out 2. You may kill the input over time doing this though...
!!! does some excellent guitar delay stuff
I’m never really sure if I’m hearing delay or some other cool effect that I’m too much of a novice to understand. But, off the top of my head this thread makes me think of “For Those About To Rock” by AC/DC... oh, and the entire first Glands album, Double Thriller is basically an ode to whatever effect it is, I think it’s delay, and it’s beautiful.

Yes. The Glands rule, and there can never be enough praise for them.
Doesn’t everyone play “She Sells Sanctuary” in Guitar shops to test delay pedals?
