Get 3 & 5 RIGHT NOW. The 1st 5 are the best, after that there is some drop off in quality—6, 7, 8.5, 9 and 10 are all great too but the vinyl pressing of 7 I have is really badly made—it sounds terrible on side 1 and I have to adjust the arm to stop the needle skating, so I’d get the CD if you can find it.

I have quite a few later ones and there’s usually a few great songs on each but they’re much less consistent—999, 1234, FU2 and 24 are all alright though.

If that’s not enough snotty punk rock for you (there will never be enough for me I don’t think!) try these:

Can’t say much more than has been said.. first 4 KBD are classic; I don’t know the 5th. Also, Bloodstains Across the Midwest = lifechanging.

the two Murder Punk comps are aussie KBD stuff. sound isn’t fantastic but the songs are tremendous

Definitely have to check Murder Punk. As far as OZ punk/garage goes, I already have “Do the pop” and one with a generic title like ‘sounds from the underground’ which isn’t to hand. These aren’t strictly KBD as they also cover 80’s garage revival stuff but it’s absolute mayhem all the way. Was it something in the beer back then?

i think so! those two comps are excellent, and there’s now a second volume of the ‘australian underground’ set. in a less punk and more post-punk vein, there’s also “can’t stop it” and “inner city sound”

(although those two are more for a messthetics fan than a KBD one)

also the killed by death “british DIY” volume is pretty rad. with the paste-on cover.

Any of you guys get the Killed by Hardcore volumes? I think there were two. Tony Rettman reviewed the first one for Blastitude and said it was awesome.

Oz Xpost: Woaahh . . “Inner City Sound” looks amazing, and right up my street. A track by the Sacred Cowboys, no less. Virgin in Edinburgh had an import copy of their LP at about three times the price of a domestic release, when I was a madmental Birthday Party fanatic. I used to go in after signing on, look at it, and put it back on the shelf. Probably the right thing to do at the time, but I still have to hear them.

Great Aussie comp I did shell out for back then was ‘No worries’, loads of cool Citadel stuff.

Murder Punk is great yeah—also check out AK79 (reissued by Flying Nun) which is all NZ stuff.

There are 3 Killed By Hardcores that I know of, I only have #1 but that one kicks ass.

Anyone know the Prats? Fantastic Scottish post punk DIY, and these guys were so young, they had to have their parents drive them to their gigs! John Peel loved ’em. As he should.

Oh yeah I know the Prats, I’m not sure they really fit in with this stuff as they’re more the Messthetics/DIY style, but yeah I have that compilation CD and the Earcom compilation they first appeared on.

I got the Everybody Hates You CD a few years before those 2 came out but I can’t get enough Pagans so I’ve since picked up Pink Album Plus and intend to get Shit Street at some point. Everybody Hates You has most of it already, but whatever.

But yeah srsly get Shit Street first, What’s This Shit Called Love is one of the best songs ever released ever.

The UK DIY volume was 9 I think? Pretty great precurser to the Messthetics series. The big pre-Messthetics boots were the Instant Pop Classics boots, 2 volumes, a third was announced but never arrived...Desperate Bicycles, The Fakes, Weekend, They Must Be Russians, Versatile Newts etc.

No, #9 is all-American.

The British DIY was numbered #1 as the numbers had got all silly by that time so they couldn’t be bothered to work out what the next one should be and started over!

I just got the International Discography of The New Wave Vol. 1982–83 in the post today. Apparently it goes for a lot of money now but I got it for a very reasonable price. I’m just amazed at what those people who put it together managed to accomplish without even the kind of computer help we now take for granted. ESOJ, I think I’m going to check out those Aussie post-punk comps...I’ve honestly studied the British side of things for so long now I think it’s really time for me to move on.

I’ll try the Pagans, too, what the hell.

This is probably my favourite of all of them. I don’t think there’s a bad song on it. I’ve since managed to track down the original Black Easter and Teddy & the Frat Girls singles, but as with most KBD stuff the rest is just too expensive!

On that tip, the Auto Glamour Sound comp that came out recently is cool, still digesting it though.

The Dieter Meier single is amazing, I got both sides off a blog.

Yeah Auto Glamour Sound is a cool comp too, my favourite (new to me) band on it is Eleven Thousand Switches.

I think that Maggots single (or one Maggots single, at any rate) just got reissued/booted.

Yeah it was that Maggots single. With a couple of extra tracks. Haven’t heard it yet.

oh man Cleveland Confidential has that unbelievable Womanhaters tune “Cry 815” or whatever, kind of an ultra-nasty slowed down version of the Pagans tune. Plus the Defnics! Great comp.

Also a note that I was very disappointed in Bloodstains Across Australia. Murder Punk comps are ten times better.

There was also an LP released before the KBD series came out called “Feel Lucky Punk” that had a buncha Aussie stuff and other goodies of this sort, also excellent.

Defnics were awesome yeah. “51%” is on Killed By Death #6—is it the same song on Cleveland Confidential? I don’t actually know that comp.
