AMEN TO THAT!

ah... I’m only being a sourpuss, I just feel weird rating records I haven’t got to know very well, if not inside-out. Also I heard a LOT of records I didn’t care for much at all, after a few cursory listens this year. I didn’t want to give them the recognition of listing just to fill out a gap.

I listened to the Peaches record the other day and it’s better (2/3 great!) than I remember. The Kills would er, kill to do minimalist electro-rock this well, or be as much fun. Only real problem is the falling off around the tenth track “Give Er”(?) which is SO tossed off it kills the (precarious) momentum with a shot of pure, distilled boredom, next track ain’t much better and after that it’s a real chore to reach the end. Will skip it foreverafter.

Half the fascination w/lists this year is remembering all the stuff I’ve forgotten I even heard!

singles are too difficult for me. looking back there are a surprising number of great singles. here’s some albums i liked:

1. mahogany—connectivity! (streets ahead of anything else released this or last year)

2. rainer maria—catastrophe keeps us together (if they’d stuck to only 9 tracks on this one, like all their others, this album could have been near-perfect)

3. the young knives—voices of animals and men (amazing singles, and a surprisingly strong album along with them. even this band’s b-sides are great)

4. outrageous cherry—stay happy (their most angry, bitter record. initially a disappointment but hasn’t stopped growing on me yet.)

5. minimum chips—kitchen tea thankyou (their first proper album after 11 years, and it’s great!)

6. the research—breaking up (really good singles, but starts to wear a little thin over 45 minutes)

7. laura jean—our swan song (best aussie folk album in a long time)

8. iliketrains—progress reform (more of a singles comp, but the singles were awesome)

9. battle—back to earth (everyone seems to hate this band but me)

10. love is all—nine times that same song (although i would have liked more than three new songs)

hon mentions but i couldn’t get past their terrible production much of the time:

captain—this is hazelville (revolting amount of autotune)

the pipettes—we are the pipettes (the dude who mixed this needs to be banned from ever being behind a desk again)

biggest disappointments of the year: johnny boy. get someone competent to mix the next one, if there is one. the serena-maneesh album is a staggeringly boring record.

Ricardo Villalobos—808 the Bassqueen [LO-FI 009, 1999]

His recent work possesses the same sort of anxiety that seems to have dominated the last several years of music, but if we ever needed a reminder of how much the world has changed in the past five years, this makes earth c. 1999 seem like a different planet. Also, it’s the best thing he’s ever done.

Fleetwood Mac—Rumours

Now that I can appreciate Dreams for what it is, a simple and sober pop song about heartbreak and defiance, its ability to transform itself seems even more impressive than the streaky space flight I first heard in it.

Quiet Village Project—Too High To Move / Drax [WEWW 006, 2005]

Slowing a kinetic rhythm track to a lounge tempo, giving it a bittersweet monologue about betrayal, love, money, Las Vegas, and a saxophone, the QV showed us the beauty in sadness and desolation, as if we needed the reminder. This record maybe saved my life.

Underground Resistance—World 2 World

I’m not sure I have much to add to the praise surrounding this record, so I’ll just mention that the monotonous one-note synth line in Greater Than Yourself is really similar to what anchors King Sunny Ade’s Gbeyo Gbeyo and I think it’s a lovely way to make a track move along.

Thomas Melchior & Luciano—Solomon’s Prayer / Father [CADENZA 11, 2006]

The a-side has beautiful vocals providing a mumbled, lilting melody and soft vocoders over a house beat with lots of compression. The vocals are it.

Maurice—This Is Acid (K&T mix) [VE-7016, 1988]

I just discovered this last month after owning this This Is Acid remix 12“ for six months, because when I bought it unheard for like, $1, I expected acid. There is no acid in this track. There is hardly any acid on the entire record. So I ignored it. And then one day I put it back on. It is a pretty obvious rip-off of Todd Terry’s Can U Party, but it is better than both Can U Party and the original mix of This Is Acid. The decoupling of Maurice’s lyrics from any part of the actual production only improves the song.

For about a year, ending this past June, I used this record as my alarm clock. I still get a weird tingly ”let’s go!“ sensation all over my body when those synths come in and the beat drops in Pictureloved. Still my favorite album if I have to choose.

I listened to the following mostly in the spring and not so much anymore but they were all amazing at the time. I still listen to the Lobo / Quarteto Novo album but I don’t know what to say about it.
