cuz i’m curious.
what album released in 2006 (reissue or otherwise) did you listen to the most this year.
what song released in 2006 (reissue or otherwise) did you listen to the most this year.
what album NOT released in 2006 did you listen to the most this year(for some of you, and i’m not naming names, this will probably be Tusk).
what song NOT released in 2006 did you listen to the most this year.
i like knowing what people were obsessed with more than i like knowing what people think was the “best”. you know?
Can’t answer any of those questions Scott. If you’d asked me at the beginning of the year I could have kept count.
what album NOT released in 2006 did you listen to the most this year(for some of you, and i’m not naming names, this will probably be Tusk).
Dimmu Borgir “Death Cult Armageddon”, it’s on in the car all the time.
what song NOT released in 2006 did you listen to the most this year.
Dimmu Borgir “Progenies of the Great Apocalypse”, my favourite track off the above album.
I’d guess :
2006 album : Tom Verlaine—Songs and Other Things
2006 track : Sonic Youth—Turquoise Boy
not 2006 album : V/A : Garage Beat Vol 5 ‘Readin’ Your Will’
not 2006 track : Kirsty MacColl—They Don’t Know
probably:
the knife—silent shout
the knife—marble house
kate bush—the hounds of love
propaganda—dr. mabuse
i’ll have to check the stacks to guess what old record/song i played the most. the 2006 album i played the most was *Death Knows Your Name* by hardcore band The Hope Conspiracy. It has been in the truck’s CD player for about 3 months and i listen to it every time i go to work and come home from work(the only time i really drive the truck). I have listened to the fourth song on that album “Animal Farm” AT LEAST one hundred times. i’m like demented ten year old scott when it comes to that song. i still have no plans to take that disc out of the truck.

2006 album: White Bread, Black Beer (probably by a margin of about 10:1, or at least it felt that way)
2006 track: probably “Unwritten” (Natasha Bedingfield) or “Unfaithful” (Rihanna), but that’s really hard to say. (I also kept hitting ‘repeat’ on the Vanessa Hudgens single, the Nerina Pallott single + a bunch of others)
can only answer those two for now—I always listen to lots of older music, but I don’t remember obsessing on anything—if I did it would’ve happened much earlier in the year.
2006 album: Asa—Terveisiä kaaoksesta. Probably the first Finnish rap LP that owes absolutely nothing to American rap.
2006 track: Gnarls Barkley—Crazy. Too bad the album was absolutely mediocre. Give us back solo Cee-Lo!
Non 2006 album: Dean Martin—Young Dino 4 CD box set. The coolest crooner ever to have lived.
2006 album: Ellen Allien/Apparat—Orchestra Of Bubbles
2006 track: I’m stumped! and I don’t use ‘play count’ so it’s either Cosey Fanni Tutti—Licking The Juice (if this is anything close to as good as the new (2007) Throbbing Gristle album might be I am k-excited), or something off The Knife’s album, probably Like A Pen or it could even be Louderbach—Grace (Anxiety) for being on the Sascha Funke mix cd and also getting cherrypicked a lot, when I’m bored, from it’s parent album...
not 2006 album: Kirsty MacColl—From Croydon to Cuba... An Anthology (compilation, a constant comfort I’ve been returning to this like an electric blanket all year)) or Ricardo Villalobs—Achso (e.p.!)... or perhaps Keninckie—Get In?
not 2006 track: Nina Hagen—African Reggae by a mile.
“African Reggae” is such a great tune!
not 2006 album: might also be that Dubstep Warz breezeblock session! Won’t be Kenickie after all (only found it in septemeber, not had it long enough for plays to add up that much).

what album released in 2006 (reissue or otherwise) did you listen to the most this year. “More Pressure Volume One—Straight To The Head” by a pretty sizeable margin. For new records jeez it might be the Burial record? Maybe “Tunnel Vision Volume 1”? Nothing really jumps out at me.
what song released in 2006 (reissue or otherwise) did you listen to the most this year. “Ghetto Story” definitely, but I think it might have come out last year somewhere, which if it did then it is probably another Dave Kelly production probably Pinchers “Enemies” or Cham’s “Rude Boy Pledge” on the Stage Show riddim.

what song NOT released in 2006 did you listen to the most this year. Jackie Mittoo, Bagga Walker & Pablov Black’s “After Christmas”. Thanks Soul Jazz (should also thank Woebot for writing about it on his 100 Best Records list which made me want to hear it even more.)

Album not-2006: Ashlee Simpson Autobiography.
Single not-2006: Aly & A.J. “Rush” (late ’05, but it’s going on my 2006 P&J ballot ’cause this was its year of maximum impact); most played at home and most heard on the radio, nothing else comes close. Into your head, into your mind, out of your soul, race through your veins, you can’t escape, you can’t escape.
I think my most played albums this year were Ron Goedert’s Breaking All the Rules, the Three O’Clock’s Arrive Without Travelling, and the first Klaatu album. 2006 track christ knows. i really can’t think. rihanna, “sos”? kasabian, “empire”? (still an awesome track, despite their hatefulness and the shitness of the album.) the spinto band, “mandy”? the divine comedy, “a lady of a certain age”? one of them. rihanna probably edges it.

I think this thread highlighted what I feel to be the greatest weakness of 2006: not one of my favourite 12–13 albums of the year made me obsessed for any length of time. I was aware of this fact before the thread began, and felt rather irritated about it subconsciously. But it took this thread to make me give any real thought.
Anyway, I’ve tried quite a few new (and old) things because of this thread and I gotta say you guys were right about the Knife “Silent Shout”. Believe it or not, I heard that for the first time tonight right after hearing Ultravox’s “Vienna” album for the first time in its entirety. Really speechless at both albums right now. So much of the time synthesizer new wave era music seems shallow, throwaway to me, like bubblegum pop too thin to even blow any bubbles in. These two sound so substantial next to all that. What a breath of fresh air! Thanks ILM.
(recently, Half Man Half Biscuit’s Back In The DHSS is making a late run for the old album of the year. Arab Strap’s Shy Retirer similarly for the track)

God bless you for mentioning it!! Never known a single soul who appreciated this one. I still have it on vinyl, in fact, and will probably pull it out very soon here, just because of you. “Reasons To Be Miserable” was my favourite.
Also, the only thing I myself can contribute to this poll with any certainty is the non-2006 song I played most this year: French singer Armande Altai’s “Balance-toi Lola, seule sous la luna, nue dans les lilas” which despite the long title is actually very catchy. It comes from 1983 and was produced by MARTIN HANNETT and he makes the guitars sound exactly like Joy Division. But don’t try to find it on vinyl unless you want to pay through the nose for what may be a scratchy LP.
It’s not available on CD either unless you can get your hands on the her “Remembo” CD in which case I’ll be your best friend for life.
