I’ve actually been listening to more straight instrumentals than dub lately esp. Studio One’s Downbeat The Ruler and Scorchers 2 (“After Christmas” on the latter may be one of the finest moments ever in music.) Leggo Dub, like Earthquake on Hot Pot, is more in the vein of African Dub 3 and probably better (most of it versions Mr Isaacs, noice) with all the wacky bells and whistles and dog barking, etc.

Is there anything more disappointing than the Flying Lizard’s dub album?

You’d think this is a group who’d really draw on all their ambient sounds, instrumentals and studio textures to make a really good dub album, and its just plain dull. Grrrr...

I just listened to Nonplace Urban Field’s “Westernized Dub”, which is among my top 10 dub tunes ever.

This has been sitting basically unlistened to in my “to listen” pile for a year and a half at least so yeah I’d say it probably is.

The Motion comp of King Tubby & Friends stuff is really good btw.

On the non-dub tip though, the Tower extravaganza has short-circuited my purchases of new records, but Deliver Me From My Enemies and Life Goes In Circles are both on my list of stuff to get. Studio One Groups may have a bit too many familiar tracks for me to care about tracking it down (do “Pick Up The Pieces”, “Happy Land”, “Baby Why” really need to be anthologized again?) although generally this is some of my favorite stuff ever.

if that’s not a serious answer I’ve been dipping into “Macro Dub Infection Vol. 1” and “Dub Chill Out” (compilation with the big names on...) but not that much, I’m a dub n00b. And Trojan Jamaican Superstars Box Set/Trojan D.J. Box Set/Trojan Reggae Duets Box Set which are not dub anyway...

And if anyone can find me (ysi?) the vocal version of “Telephone Love” by (???) I would be stoked. I love that tune. Found it in Hard Wax and jumped for joy but it was only the instrumental :(

i think the backing tracks on that comp are much more interesting, dubwise, than most of the tracks on dub I and dub II.

probably not so “interesting” more like I’m being way flippant and have forgotten what non-vocal tracks are actually on it ;-)

(and yes I know dub != just no vocals but I am pretty n00b still (any interest I have to start with is via dub-techno and the one reggae night they have locally I go to...)

dub cliche—the extra disc that comes with the latest adrian sherwood ‘solo’ album, becoming a cliche, in fact i have listened to the dub disc a lot (LOT) more than the proper album. its like all the good on-u trademark sopnic tricks all wrapped up in one fine sounding set. much better than his previous ‘solo’ album that’s ferrsure.

That reminds me, can anyone think of records with a lot of dubbed-out trombone? I heard a track on the radio that was great, no idea who it was.

I have a memory of hearing a dub album in the mid 80s round a friend’s house which seemed to be based around ‘The Good, Bad, and the Ugly’ with dubbed-out mariachi style effects.

I’ve never been able to track down what it was.

Starting this thread has proved quite expensive: I’ve so far ordered the Leggo, Joe Gibbs and Wareika Dub CDs (quite cheap of Amazon UK ‘new and used’)

Haha all of them! Best of Studio One and Full Up: More Best of Studio One on Heartbeat are absolute must haves esp. since they each have 6 bonus tracks and pristine sound. Studio One Rockers, Studio One Roots and Studio One Scorchers 1 & 2 on Soul Jazz are all pretty essentially as well. Sometimes the Soul Jazz and Heartbeat stuff repeats a track, but it’s pretty rare as there is so much Coxsone stuff to choose from.

DO NOT GET “Studio One Soul”! I really liked the “Women”, “Roots” and “Lovers”.

Oh that’s mean. I think both the Studio One Soul comps are great, easily as good as that Blood & Fire Darker Than Blue.

I REALLY like Express Yourself off studio one soul. It manages to sound like early happy mondays.

The whole comp gets a bit insipid, though.

I dunno, none of the “Studio One Soul” tracks seemed to really add much to the originals (well, besides the obvious fact that they’re reggaefied covers), the whole thing felt very bland. “Hustle!” is totally great tho, agreed.

Ossie All Stars Leggo Dub was an excellent recommendation—really like it.

Did they share the same sound effects with Joe Gibb’s African Dub team? The gong, flowing water, doorbell and telephone sound very similar.

Anyone got Studio One Groups?

I’d say the two essential SJ Studio One comps are Rockers and Dub. Dub is really special—I don’t know who the hell actually mixed these, whether it was Sylvan Morris or Coxsone himself, but some of that material is amazing. The dub of Delroy Wilson’s orginal Run Run (Running Dub) is a cracker, especially when the vocal comes back in at the end.

Oh—and Studio One Funk is great too.

I’ve also been listening to the Scientist ‘Vampires’ set recently—possibly my favourite Dub album, certainly in my top 3. For me, it’s quality of the vocal and the way that he leaves in just enough of it to set an atmosphere that makes Scientist so special. That and the sheer depth of the mixes.

I like the Scientist ‘Vampires’ and ‘World Cup’ albums.

Some of his other records I’ve found a bit anaemic, in that he has a good concept—such as space invaders—but doesn’t play around enough with those sounds.

damn you werent kidding. i wanted rockers but they were out so i got roots and djs and both are excellent. think i saw the full up one there and one of the scorchers (is that the instrumentals one?). can anyone rep for the djs vol. 2?

Both Scorchers are instrumental (or 90% instrumental, there are some vocals on the best track on both volumes “After Christmas”.) Haven’t heard DJs Vol 2, but the tracklist looks fantastic (even though I don’t recognize any tracks from other stuff I have.) I don’t think you can go too wrong with any of the Soul Jazz comps (although Classics is sort of mooted by owning the two Heartbeat comps I listed above.)

I came around to the new Dub Trio record finally. The metal parts are cheap thrills and there’s some great dub shit. The Patton tune is actually my least favorite track I think.

It’s that heavy echo-ed flat style of singjaying a la Tenor Saw/Nitty Gritty/Courtney Melody that’s ubiquitous in early 80s dancehall.

The two Niney collections are tops: Some Like It Hot and Open The Gate. The Blood & Fire collection which is really just a late Joe Gibbs 70s album with a bunch of bonus cuts. It is good but uneven and not as essential as the other Joe Gibbs produced stuff (Visions, Words of Wisdom.) I would start with the first Niney collection and move on from there.

The new B&F Yabby You is a bit like the Dennis Brown one actually. It’s great, but if you feel like you have enough of their stuff it’s one of those things you can wait to find cheap.

I mean that’s a great album, but as I said on that other thread if you want to be convinced of Perry’s genius that’s not the first place I would turn.

Yeah also Blackboard Jungle Dub is at least as much a King Tubby dub album as it as Perry dub album. If you want a Perry dub album then get Super Ape (which is the only Perry record that might contradict Violent J’s equation above, I guess.)

Next Blood & Fire set will be U-ROY 1969–75. Not sure how much more of that period of U-Roy I need, but could be some great productions which’ll make it worthwhile.

Slow release time otherwise. No new Auralux, no new Hot Pot. But in addition to reissueing Brand Pressure Sounds is putting out this which is probably fantastic. Brand is really really underrated btw.

That should be re-reissuing Brand. Also curious about this Milton Henry on Wackies, but I can probably wait on that.

Wow that’s a lot of Joe Gibbs dub. I have the first five you mention and then a couple of vocal/deejay collections. Compared to Channel One or Bunny Lee, Gibbs feels kind of underrepresented in the reissue market actually although apparently he’s been pretty difficult to work with so that may be entirely his fault.
