Mostly very very good, but NIGHTMARES is like a Nutter Butter moon of repeat goodness.

nutter butter moon?

they don’t have moons made of nutter butter in the UK?

The album is quite good indeed. For those who haven’t heard, most of it is on their myspace.

Am I the only one who doesn’t even bother trying to tell them apart?

The album is pretty fantastic, but dirty money is a crime especially coming after ride around shining.

Nightmares is pretty wack. “P-noid” makes me rofl. Trill is amazing.

lets have some naysaying already

dirty money is a crime especially coming after ride around shining.

Mentalism! Those are the two best songs.

dirty money is a crime especially coming after ride around shining.

Mentalism! Those are the two best songs.

Sorry, what I meant was this: its a shame that dirty money, my least favorite track, follows ride around shining, my favorite track.

naysaying, huh?

I mean, the first five tracks are nearly flawless in my opinion. Even Pharrell manages to write some enjoyable rhymes, at least nothing that makes you wince. Dirty Money’s beat is awful, just...fucking godawful. it sounds like a casio fueled joke but its not. otherwise, after that, the rest of the beats are pretty good. Nightmares is quite wack, but its mostly listenable.

The rhymes are spot on, simple and clean, a lot of it subtly introspective. Malice has a great ear for assonance.

just listen to it on myspace if you want to naysay it. I don’t have any naysay, really, its been in my cd player all night.

Malice has great ear for assonance

what am I, in a college poetry workshop? yuck.

To me, the “Dirty Money” beat sounds like funky guitar licks over nasty-ass boom bap drums, but eye of the beholder, different strokes, etc. Agree about “Nightmares”, though. I think “P-noid” is something they could get away with if they just dropped it into a rhyme once and never said it again, but as the hook of a song, sung, it sounds ludicrous.

Deftly applied assonance is a quality of good poetry. I don’t see anything wrong with yr statement.

I should know I WAS PUB’D IN A COMMUNITY COLLEGE LIT MAG AFTER ALL

argh xxpost

how about musically and thematically monotonous?

Are you actually complaining about that vahid? It seems so. . . unlike you somehow.

the rhymes are fine but aren’t they sort of treading water after “lord willin” and the mixtapes?

why do critics always love it when hip hop gets all depressing and paranoid, or at least why do they use those terms as if the thematic tone of the tunes is enough? (possible strawman argument here)

thematically monotonous makes a much bigger difference when its vocal music.

musically monotonous = i have nothing against a steady beat but this thing barely has a pulse.

that is sort of where i am going with this. i wouldn’t mind some purple haze type all-over-the-map action from these guys at this point. instead i get eleven variations on “hot” from clones...

I think critics generally tend to love it when music that flirts with the darkside (whether it’s hip-hop or hardcore or hawaiian.)

“thematically monotonous makes a much bigger difference when its vocal music.”

Really?

“musically monotonous = i have nothing against a steady beat but this thing barely has a pulse.”

I actually haven’t heard the record yet, but is it actually less varied than Lord Willin’?

IMHO yes

on both counts

There are certain themes I find boring, but it doesn’t bother me when I hear the 1,000 plea for repatriation in a roots song so it’s hard for me to get too worked up about hearing the 1,000 variation on crack-slinging either.

Is the general consensus that this is better than Lord Willin’ btw? Or just that it’s a really good record that people had been waiting on for ages?

is lord willin’ considered perfect or something, cuz i only really like about half of it. the other half is decent, but it’s wierd for me to hear people talking about it like it’s some deathless classic.

I think it’s pretty classic. There aren’t many records from this decade that I like more.

lord willin is a really good album that i like because it seemed to do some things nobody else was doing at the time (namely, raps like clipse raps and beats like “grindin”)

this is another good album that has more clipse raps and more nice beats but that for some reasons barely simmers.

ok, forget thematically ... i meant maybe emotionally? it’s not that i mind crack rap so much but that they’re only approaching it from the one “i am so cold right now” angle. where’s the rage? where’s the humor? where’s the party?

when you know they can do something like that freestyle they did over “time’s up”, or “ego”, or “blaze of glory” hearing them hit the same note 9 or 10 times straight sort of bugs.

Lord Willin’ is about half great, half decent filler and I’m beginning to think it’s the same thing on Fury as well... and the admittedly bad dirty money, yes.

Hating on Nightmares because it uses the neologism “p-noid” is like hating on Teen Spirit cause he’s talking about a mulatto. It’s a revamping of Mind’s Playing Tricks on Me with Bilal singing the chorus for fuck’s sake. This is a good idea.

But yes, Trill is good too.

Pharrell’s production is bare bones beautiful but someone stop that fucker before he raps again. I’d pay a dollar for a version of ‘Mr. Me Too’ without him on it.

Kalefa called the album paranoid and shifty; not things that I would argue with. It’s less emotionally bereft to me than it is just really stripped tha fuck down. I’m not sure I’ll be listening to it next year, but it’s amazing right now.

Not to open up the can ‘o race worms, but...

http://stylusmagazine.com/pbw/2006/11/29/255/#respond

where’s the rage? where’s the humor? where’s the party?

In short:

“Hello New World,” “Ride Around Shining,” “Wamp Wamp,” respectively.

Am I the only one who absolutely loves “Dirty Money”?

And about “P-Noid”: Nobody’s hating it cause it’s a new neologism. We hate it because it’s a stoopid neologism. Fine shades of difference.

new neologism

Redundancy!

Am I the only one who absolutely loves “Dirty Money”?

— Rodney Von Bushwickin The Barbarian Mother-Funky Stay High Dollar Billster (rodneyjgreen...),

I don’t “absolutely love” it, but I certainly don’t understand why people think it’s the worst beat/song on the record. To my ears it’s much more immediate than “Ride Around Shining” for example.

i actually like “nightmares” a lot, that line about being “p-noid” is one of those hilarity moments like that eamon song or the best outkast choruses. yes, it’s retarded, that’s why it’s great. avoid the noid.

i think “nightmares” is the sort of range i was looking for. i listened to it three more times since the earlier posts (it’s awesomely concise, i’ll give it that—10.0 for pacing!) and the songs are opening up a bit, but compared to something like “king” i still think its lacking.

my five years ago ex-roomie dope dealer always chanted p-noid p-noid on the few occasions I got high cause I got... well, p-noid. So it’s not exactly a neologism in any case.

I wouldn’t compare Fury to King as quickly as I would to Ratatat. Both are wafer thin (this album doesn’t have levels, it has LEVEL) and I imagine this’ll have the same light staying power (i.e. a week’s worth of very very heavy play and then one or two cherrypicks that make the regular rotation) but for the moment it’s on some ‘since-sliced-bread’ shit. Plus if you remove Dirty Money, it’s just long enough to be a good run tape and then I have Nightmares to cool down to.

Make my noid the P-noid! I want my noid uncut!

actually i think the funniest track is “ain’t cha”

I just can’t believe that on Nightmares he actually delivers the line “spending money like Happy Days / I’m the real Fonzie”

for the most part I like the album though. “Keys Open Doors” beat is pretty crazy (the choirs!), the one with Slim Thug is good too.

haha oops, real name no gimmicks, damn u new ilx

picked this up this AM.

liking it quite a bit so far.

one thing i really have to take my hat off to clipse for, and it might seem like a small thing, but i think it’s important: they keep their albums short and focused...12 tracks is perfect, no bullshit filler like so many rap albums, i think that’s one of the big reasons they come off so well.

yeah, but there’s definitely been a trend toward shorter albums in big budget rap lately (especially at Def Jam, where most of the stuff released since Jay-Z’s been in charge have been 45–55 minutes). I do kind of prefer smaller, more digestible albums in general, but (and I’m sure I’ve said this before on non-sandbox ILM) with rap I kinda like having a big sprawling 70-minute mess these days, if only because so many tracks are leaked or released as singles before the album drops. I feel much more motivated to buy a CD if the ratio of songs I have heard to songs I haven’t heard is like 5 to 12 rather than 5 to 7.

I do sort of agree with vahid about the monotony though. Lord Willin’ had the hard minimal shit like Grindin, the club track (When the Last Time), the pop / ladies rap (Ma I Don’t Love Her), etc. Whereas this one is scarface miami vice crockett and tubbs, start to finish. But it’s still pretty good! I don’t mind Dirty Money that much. Nightmares is corny though.

unrelated—did Definition of a Roller ever come out on anything but mixtapes?

i guess trill and dirty money feel kinda like “club” songs, more grim though overall.

nightmares is the only one i’m not really digging, if only cuz it takes so fucking long to get going!

I never understood the lengthiness of hip-hop albums from a marketing standpoint as well as from an artistic standpoint.

1.) If they’re going for the drop of a few singles why make more work for themselves by adding track 24? they’re still paying for the beats and the extra track that might not even pay off in the end.

2.) If they’re going for a good overall album, why put garbage in there?

3.) If they’re just prolific rhymers why not save the extra rhymes for a rainy day?

I mean, isn’t album efficiency more valuable for label and artist because its cheaper and safer?

This goes for all albums; Cripple Crow is just as guilty as Purple Haze in my opinion, I just find that it happens on rap albums a lot more.

Ladies and Gentlemen, the gangsta Cripple Crow has finally arrived.

haha

also, wrt to “nightmares”..i wish someone would tell neptunes that they are really good at making zoomy outer space synth bullshit and not that good at making mid-tempo prince trax that got cut off of lovesexy.

Dirty Money is great!

Also I’ve only heard a few songs from this, but are there any basslines on the record?

See Matt, i think they ARE really good at making mid-tempo prince tracks cut off lovesexy.

Have you had YOUR plus sign today?

What tofu said, even if this particular example sucks.

I just can’t believe that on Nightmares he actually delivers the line “spending money like Happy Days / I’m the real Fonzie”

Actually a reference to (cough cough) their uncle Fonzi:

wow, OM is even more pretentious than AQ these days!

Hasn’t it always been that way?

“Look for art house screenings of I Am Trying to Sell You Some Cocaine during summer 2007.”

“Look for art house screenings of I Am Trying to Sell You Some Cocaine during

summer 2007.”

movie studio drama

is this the only rap thread on the sandbox? jesus.

oh right. yippee.

why don’t you start an awesome thread, Al!

I don’t think you can plan an awesome thread (although I guess you can pick a loaded topic that guarantees responses, at least, which has never been my interest or my strong suit). They seem to happen by accident. And I don’t really have any ideas anyway, I just wish there was a good thread to bullshit on and don’t really feel like derailed yet another Clipse thread, it’s been done before.

Just start a Rolling thread and have at it.

Rolling Sandbox Start Some Shit Thread

let’s talk about some misunderstood rhymes

what the heck does he mean when he says “i got so many bullets shit you call me left fist”???

I was about to ask what a Twinkie Tray is but I just figured it out

I think maybe it’s “lead fist”

He who does not love “Dirty Money” is nuts. Clearly the most fun song on the album.

first time i heard him say “brains like teri” i thought he meant teri schiavo and it was the ultimate diss. then i realized he was talking about teri hatcher and i was sort of bummed.

OMG U R MY SOULMATE

The fuck?

That was not supposed to go into this thread.

lol u <3 vahid

Apperently.

“it’s simpler than Blue’s Clues”

wait i think it’s “simple as Blue’s Clues”

either way... :/

How annoying is the hook on Keys Open Doors?

I love that hook!

http://www.sendspace.com/file/in0zcp—5 tracks left off the album. forgot where i found them

i’m surprised no one’s complained about “Momma I’m Sorry”. it’s so clunky and embarrassing.

but saved by the Tubbs and Crockett line.

All the clunky stuff (most especially Pharrell singing on the track after “Dirty Money”) works for some reason. It’s not a brilliant album, maybe a bit same-y, but until the last two tracks it’s the most enjoyable album of the year to listen to while driving.

i like momma i’m sorry.

the only chorus that bugs me is “ain’t cha”

Favorite misheard line: “Ho’s holla back just like they Paris”

Was kinda disappointed when I figured out he’s saying parrots.

does anyone know what a “mullener” is?

^^^

srsly.

yeah I just assume that every obscure word I don’t recognize in a Clipse or Pharrell lyric is just the name of some corny luxury brand that noone under a certain tax bracket has ever heard of in the course of their daily life

although it’s kind of hilarious how often herbs seem to take Pharrell’s constant references to “ice cream” at face value and think he’s just really into dessert.

DeRo kills me.

“Sorry, Gwen, but this album is about as appealing as a puddle of melted Rocky Road. And if you doubt it, you can just go lay-od-lay-od-lay-he-hoo.”

srsly.

does anyone know what a “mullener” is?

Wodehouse shout-out?

oh, shalitpaws

Why is the pyrex jewish?

And why do you think they call it jewellery?

It is wearing a tiny yarmulke.

Real answer: When you cook the powder it “turns into a tight wad”

I was all Stewie Griffin going “WHOOOOA, where did that come from?”

Also, none of these esoteric slang bits as awesome as Young Dro saying he “rides Februarys.” That’s just satisfying in so, so many ways.

yeah, Young Dro’s wordplay > Pusha T’s

Also, I think Pharrell says “twinkie train,” which I imagine means a car with white interior.

But that’s just a guess. Maybe I should renew my subscription to Dubs.

Young Dro’s album > Clipse’s

Surely “twinkie train” would involve... actually no, not before 9pm.

are there 23 inch rims? that’s what i thought twinkie tray meant.

Yeah, I’m with m@tt, twinkie=20; trey=3. i think.

in other news someone at Other Music apparently thought that GQ review was the best line ever. UH

And that about sums it up — a rap classic for the MySpace generation, the black Yankee Hotel Foxtrot, a nostalgia treat for cynics, the worthy successor to Illmatic. Yep. Check for the expanded edition in 2020. [HG]

— dmr (dmr334...), December 1st, 2006 5:36 PM.

that review is totally ihttp://www.soulstrut.com/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/whoa.gif

I like this album alright, I wouldn’t say its one of my favorite rap albums this year, but its pretty good. Its sort’ve like if the Neptunes go Havoc or something. I think Clipse can be tacky rappers sometimes, like the metaphors get to nu-Jay-Z levels of corniness on occasion...but overall the bleak insular world of bapes and abstract crack sale references comes together musically.

The real fun is reading countless reviews talk about how its the best rap album since Illmatic.

No no, the real fun was in reading the dudes at okayplayer justifying their claim that Food & Liquor was the best since Illmatic!

nah nobody pays attention to them any more.

the bleak insular world of bapes

haha yeah I really have trouble with how this album is being sold as some dark glimpse into harsh reality or whatever when half the lyrics are about thousand dollar jeans with mountain lions stitched on the crotch
