-Anatole Broyard, ‘Kafka Was the Rage’

True? What are some others? Hunting for treasure? Opening a record store?

yes, true. for me, yes to

bookshop

living off the land

hunting for treasure

and add

just walking away

yeah.

and add

just walking. walking and walking.

living in a train car

nonstop travel with my life in one suitcase

yes. yes.

another:

invent something... grand or important.

start a business.

invent something otm

start a business: yes. those sweet little specialty stores we went to on tammy’s shopping day right before i left bln (bag age, mara schmuck) revived this fantasy for me. i just feel like i could do that shit better than so many of the people who are doing it, ya know? (not referring to the two mentioned above... those are great.)

open a dance club.

yeah open a dance club. or do a dance monthly or weekly. i was thinking about ‘sunday afternoon social’ earlier tonight and how fun that’d be

yes to sunday afternoon social; sounds very fun. this slots in with my new innovation, sunday night cocktails, the perfect answer to “sunday: the slow burn. ”

monthlies check. weeklies check.

sort of silly and decadent but:

live in a hotel. be super swanky.

Owning a movie house in a smallish town and showing wonderful classic films that everyone in town has never seen, but comes to and loves.

that’s lovely, jaq. there’s a theater like that in dayton, wa (right, jergins?). well, he should tell you about it since he’s been there and i haven’t.

anyway, yes to that!

yeah dayton. they do arty movies and some popular movies and community theater. the inside is lovely.

i think maybe jaq and i talked about it once but there’s a rundown old theater in the center of pasco with a great marquee, all boarded up iirc. maybe she told me it was going going gone? it was one of those theaters that makes you dream, though, at least from the outside.

We would park outside that Pasco theater on Saturdays when we’d go to the farmers’ market. There were flurries of restoration activity, and long pauses of silence. Nothing could be seen through the windows, even where the brown paper was torn by the ticket window. I hope it opens someday with a grand fiesta and shows the films of Robert Rodriguez and Almodovar with episodes of a serialized telenovela to start each.

There’s not much I would go back to the tri-cities for, but I would go back for this.

my first thought is always HAVE a patron, but wouldn’t it also be great to BE the patron?

in the perfect world, first HAVE, then BE. PERfect world.

I will someday open a restaurant based on the principles of SAME (so all may eat). Two kinds of delicious stew or casserole (veg and not veg), maybe a salad, a freshly baked bread of some kind, butter, water, milk, or tea to drink, a simple dessert. Everyone pays what they can, everyone eats. Lunch and dinner only, maybe just on weekends at first, or a few days a week. Checkered table cloths and a comfy relaxed atmosphere.

Jaq, I love your thinking. Your restaurant sounds much like my fantasy restaurant, which is called Kitchen. Super simple, cute. I never thought about what people would pay — my fantasy is limited to the design and the fare — but the principle of SAME sounds like a terrific one, so that is now officially part of my fantasy.

oh shit here we go again

marry an heiress

an awesome cute and smart heiress

is wanting to open a bookshop really that common of a thing? doesn’t seem like it.

not for illiterates, no

what about literates?

i have a pact with my girlfriend where if were both unhappy with our career/life situation in 5 years were going to move somewhere sort of rural, maybe upstate new york or southern new jersey or somewhere in rhode island, and open a tiny little restaurant/bar with my dad as the chef with no more than 5–6 tables and just one menu every day based on what we can scrounge up and well just close the restaurant when we run out of ingredients

um thats a little more complicated than the actual pact which is just that well open a small business if we hate our lives in five years

opening a bar is probably a bigger fantasy for me than opening a bookstore, but bookstore rates pretty high

i have been thinking about this a lot because it turns out that living in the real world and having a job is not as much fun as fucking around in college

i liked your boats/sorta freedom/port post. thanks.

thanks j, i always feel really embarrassed after i barf up those long nervous personal posts about the music that i like

boats/sorta freedom/port post

the other day i said to lxy we should open an english language bookstore in montevideo but then explained it would lose money always and we’d have to actually work there and she said nahhhhhhhhhhhhhh

maybe in BA

i have worked in several bookstores; it is pretty decent

we are doing this. not off the grid by any means, just a different one. better, we hope. and no grand plans for opening any shops, etc., just making a new life in a new place. destination amsterdam, spring 2023. start making plans to see us there or meet up nearby!

are u 4 real

we just said goodbye to the jarbl, this is getting really real

!

Hard to wrap my brain around you two not being in seattle.

this is so amazing and exciting! and weirdly sad too even though seattle is a million miles from here, but i know we will meet again which is joyful and i wish you both a wonderful new life <3

i still don’t know what a jarbl is, except that i think i’m taller than it?

i think it’s a harbl-designed or introduced jar for catching fruit flies so if that’s correct it’s probably quite short

tbf harbl is quite tall. but so am i

at the risk of needlessly referencing ‘highlander’ this seems like ‘the quickening’ in which we all converge on amsterdam, but to have beers instead of behead each other

our house is for sale now, it’s a very strange feeling. maybe someone will buy it? i don’t know.

oh wowow

and our heights are marked in the basement in perpetuity

they made it through our cleaning (of course), agent’s cleaning, staging, viewing, offer, second offer, counteroffer, mutual acceptance, and pending. next up, inspection, appraisal, and sale (knock on wood fingers crossed). so far so good!

sandboxlers forever!

i just regret mookieproof and deems didn’t come to have their heights recorded. there’s

still a little time?

i was sure mookie’s was there?

hmm

I checked and no, which I’m actually glad about because otherwise it would mean I am having major memory failures.

i had beers in seattle but no measurements

perhaps we might do both in amsterdam?

definitely! <3

well now I’M having major memory failures ;_;

yeah but not about something you experienced + something you walk past multiple times a day!

true i guess it would be only a very minor memory failure

lxy has sold our data but we still <3 her vv much

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯A month passes⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

we’ll leave this house forever on june 5 and leave this country not forever (but maybe we’ll never live here again) on june 13ish.

friends, it is not swanky.

we once did six weeks in a damp grimy room in a comfort inn in orlando so i second this

magic kingdom my arse sez u

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯A year passes⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

i love it, it’s so beautiful and perfect! congratulations<3

alas these photos do not immediately suggest that i/we could sell books there?

but in any case congratulations; i wish i too could get out of this fascist shithole

actually, the property is zoned for both residential and commercial use, and those big front windows are classic winkelramen. it’s hard to tell but there is a shop right next door. so indeed, a “business” may happen at some point in the future. not a bookstore, but maybe an atelier or open studio, or something. much needs to happen before that can be considered, though. still in “persistent romance” territory.

i love everything you are doing and wish i could manage anything even remotely comparable <3

we feel so fortunate
