First, download Firefox.
Then, download and install the Greasemonkey extension.
After you’ve restarted Firefox with Greasemonkey installed, there should be a little grinning monkey icon in the bottom corner.
Now download the killfile script (mine is Will’s script from the old hoonja-doonja thread, with sandbox added). Greasemonkey should pop up with a prompt when you click that link; install the script.
You have to tell Greasemonkey where your text editor is for adding entries to the killfile, so open a new tab and type “about:config” into the URL bar. Type “grease” into the Filter field. There should be a preference named “greasemonkey.editor”; double-click it and enter C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE as the value. Now close the tab.
It’s time to add boring jerks to a list!
Either right-click the monkey icon or go to the Greasemonkey submenu under the Tools menu. Select “Manage User Scripts...”, select “kilxor,” and hit Edit. Add user names (not login names) to where I’ve put ‘That+One+Guy’ etc.
Make sure to replace all spaces in usernames with +, and get your letter cases right. If you get confused by a page because everybody else is yelling at some idiot you can no longer see, just click on the monkey to turn him grey again and hit reload.
OK, if you can still read me, please can you now explain to me how to download and install Firefox when you’re on a Citrixed system and you have no admin rights to install any software. If there are such L33T haX0rs around here, surely someone has to figure out how to do this.
You don’t need administrator priv to install Firefox. I can do it and I am on a similar set up to what you are describing.
You don’t need administrator priv to install Firefox
Would that it were so.
I have no admin rights on mine own workstation at all—I can’t even change the wallpaper, let alone install programs.
I think I’m going to killfile myself
yeah, mines the same down to the wallpaper but i dont need to kill anyone, so
Ohh...sorry, I didn’t realize you were that restricted, mine allows me some minor workstation changes which if you can do that you can add Firefox.
I can’t imagine getting anything done on a Windows machine without admin privs!
There should be a preference named “greasemonkey.editor”
This didn’t come up for me, for some reason. Firefox doesn’t seem like it works the way it supposed to on my work computer, at home it is always fine but my work one doesn’t always run extensions like adblock the way it should.
I just tried this out and the people I have killfiled still appear. Is it only on posts they make from now on that they’ll be killed?
i use my hand to cover the screen, it works fine
Well, I can do my work, which is what is important to our sys admins.
My machine is locked down tighter than others... some people can change their wallpaper. The sys admin probably specifically locked mine down tight because he knows I used to be an actual programmer! Ha ha. I can’t even set up mine own ODBCs and stuff, which is just stupid, that’s how paranoid they are. I have to ask the sys admin to set them up for me, systemwide.
x-post to JW
It only takes a bit of self control people (yes, I am stirring up trouble! I’ll stop)...
Portable Firefox might work.
Leon:
you can right-click in about:config, select New -> String. Name it greasemonkey.editor and give it the notepad path as the value. I had a bitch of a time with that too.
Mark C: Check that kilxor is enabled, the monkey is grinning, and that you have the usernames in there correctly. do you have usernames set to display on your normal ILX settings?
What should the filepath “C:\WINDOWS\NOTEPAD.EXE” be for a Mac user?
Macs are so simple though, you should know it already.
on Mac I think you can skip that step.
otherwise it should be the path to textedit, in your Applications folder.
Tom—that’s perfect, it was because I didn’t have usernames set to display. Thanks for this.
On my PC Firefox 2.0.0.1 Greasemonkey.editor doesn’t appear in the about:config thingy but it doesn’t seem to matter—you can tell it which text editor to use after you’ve opened Greasemonkey from your browser.
and so it begins
OK, I copied the username, put it between ‘ and substituted + for the spaces. I saved it. I refreshed my page, and the user is still there. Greasemonkey is on (red) and kilxor is checked. Any ideas as to why it’s not working?
i cant see anything you all are saying!
i’m not sure if this worked or not
shakey, say something
Now I’M paranoid that Tom can’t see my inquiry. This is gonna mess with a lot of peoples heads.
“Hey, are you kilxoring me?”
“...”
“Dude, can you see this”
“...”
“AM I OR AM I NOT ON YOUR KILXOR LIST?!?!”
Still no luck. Doesn’t really matter, the person I’m trying to block has already changed his username today, and I’m not going to chase after him. Obviously he understands that he’s a top-tier farmer of cock and wants to keep it that way.
fluffy did you make sure usernames are set to display in your ilx settings?
why is this thread empty? LOLZ
It works. Sorry to make you repeat that. This is exactly the type of interaction I try to avoid having with my IT people at work.
“My computer isn’t working.”
“Did you try turning it on.”
“Oh. Oh my. Oh, wow, you won’t believe this. How embarrassing. I...”
“I assure you that I will believe it. Don’t forget to fill out our service satisfaction survey. Thank you.” *click*
Thanks Tom.
hot damn this is AWESOME. tombot you are doing the lord’s work.
I’m having a lot of fun predicting who people are killfiling.
i’m predicting an annoying chaos of clueless cross posts and “hello? are you killfiling me?”
There are going to be some bizarre disconnects on the meta threads.
The unwitting crossposts could be fun.
“Hey, are you kilxoring me?”
“...”
“Dude, can you see this”
“...”
“AM I OR AM I NOT ON YOUR KILXOR LIST?!?!”
oh noes ilx becomes irc!
I love how no-one has responded to Jon’s comment :)
The only problem I have with this is that it’s almost too smooth—it’s easy to miss a load of killed posts. Still, as remarked on the moderator thread, it’s a big improvement.
I do hope we get the inevitable “post your killfile list” thread soon. That might conceivably be one worth turning Greasemonkey off for.

This is producing a whole load of weird and sometimes conflicting reactions in me. Interesting.
Half of me is all “eh, I can’t be bothered responding to anyone because everyone has probably killfiled me anyway”.
And the other half of me wants to make monkey faces at people like putting the bunny ears behind their heads with your hands, because I know that they can’t see me.
Killfiling still feels like some kind of weird epistemological experiment to me. Like: can what you don’t know hurt you? Is out of sight out of mind? This summer, TOMBOT is ... The KILLFILER.
I imagine lots of threads that go:
- I like chard better than collard greens.
- Really? I like turnip greens.
- THE HOLOCAUST NEVER HAPPENED.
- Yeah, turnip greens are good.
- I KNOW WHERE YOU LIVE AND WILL KILL YOU.
- You know what you have to try, is cooking them with anchovy.
as tom already pointed out, it’s really easy to toggle greasemonkey on and off, so it’s not THAT potentially confusing really. i dunno. we’ll see. also, toby otm, can’t wait for the YOUR BOTTOM 8 thread.

I’m not being self martyring, some people did actually state explicitly that they had killfiled me on the mod board.

Enormous vs. thunderous.

i tried reversing the polarity of the killfile so that the people you killfile are in fact killfiling you, but no joy.
with notepad.exe comes great responsibility
I kind of doubt anyone will killfile people they don’t like but like a) laughing at or b) arguing with. So 99% of us have nothing to worry about.

This is different than ILX how?
jon, I really hope you had to look that up.
IMPULSLES.....CHANGING...
1) i have done a complete u-turn on this and now think the killfile is a brilliant idea, and the answer to many of ILX’s current woes.
2) “a top-tier farmer of cock” is the official grimly phrase of the month.
I would never ever say if I’d killfiled someone or not. I mean, that would take *all* the fun out of it.
(Should there be a sense of “fun” in the idea of killfiling? Or is that a terrible schadenfreude which could wear off quickly?)
my service-oriented side is disappointed that Rock Hardy did not get it to work.
misread as
2) “a top-tier farmer of cock” is the official grimly phase of the month.
I think RH was confusing screen name and user name.
It was a little buggy with me, and then after a couple uninstall/reinstalls finally worked, re: Rock Hardy’s problem. COMPUTERS BE TEMPERMENTAL.
I don’t see why it matters whether or not who one’s killfiled is revealed? If you’re obsessed with the opinions of people who don’t like you, you have issues.
yeah the funny thing is i was thinking ‘who would actually get killfiled by someone anyone on ILX’ and i can only think of about five or six people tops, which highlights the absurdity of it all further perhaps.
this is partly because as jessie observes some people are too ‘love-to-hate/laugh at’ for someone to want to actually block ’em.
C-3PO: My lady, is there anything I might do?
Padmé: No, thank you, 3P0.
C-3PO: [walking away] I feel so helpless.
I’m going to just start posting right after people I don’t know and paraphrasing them, just to cultivate the right level of paranoia.
THAT’S IT, JON.
I think RH was confusing screen name and user name.
I was, but I went in and changed it and still no luck. I’m going to try killfiling someone else to see if I can get it to work at all. I changed the greasemonkey:editor value to [harddrivename]:Applications:TextEdit and no luck being able to edit to add or delete targets, so I have to uninstall the script, open it in TextEdit to make changes, then reinstall it. Pain in the ass.
^^^ that is what I did and it worked.
Holy cow, it works! Tombot, I am naming my firstborn in honor of you.

while we’re installing greasemonkey scripts, this one rules btw http://www.achewood.com/raysmuckles.user.js (go to google.com after installing)

Okay, I’ve been trying Andrew’s script and no luck, so let’s try Will’s script. But I have a question. Here’s the script:
// ==UserScript==
// @name kilxor
// @namespace
// @description
// @include http://ilx.wh3rd.net/*
// @include http://ilx.p3r.net/*
// @include http://ilx.thehold.net/*
// ==/UserScript==
//Put the login names you want to excise in this array like so:
var fules = [‘LaughRiot’, ‘never gets old’];
//And that’s it for configuration.
for(var k = 0; k < fules.length; k++)
{
var fule = fules[k].replace(‘ ’, ‘+’);
var posts;
posts = document.evaluate(“//a[@href=‘userinfo.php?username=“ + fule + ”’]”,
document,
null,
XPathResult.UNORDERED_NODE_SNAPSHOT_TYPE,
null);
//GM_log(‘number of posts by ’ + fule + ‘: ’ + posts.snapshotLength);
for (var i = 0; i < posts.snapshotLength; i++)
{
var thisLink = posts.snapshotItem(i);
thisLink.parentNode.parentNode.parentNode.removeChild(thisLink.parentNode.parentNode);
}
}
Where exactly do I put the “var fules = [‘LaughRiot’, ‘never gets old’];” line? In Andrew’s script, the customization goes at the very end. Is that where I put the line in Will’s version, or somewhere further up?
The problem with killfilters on message boards is that they quickly turn you into a special, sensitive, magical princess, while not really erasing unpleasant users from your consciousness: Far too frequently, you realize that you’re missing something, which will either disconnect you from the thread of conversation or irritate you to the point of removing the filter.
what a bunch of crybabies.
well as usual it is you who is to blame
rock hardy, did you killfile your brain?
i don’t even know who that is, who is blaming me.
leave it right where it is! comments aren’t read by the machinery. you just fill the array in between the [ ] with whoever you don’t like.
Do I replace the line
var fule = fules[k].replace(‘ ’, ‘+’);
with
var fules = [‘LaughRiot’, ‘never gets old’];
?
xpost, PROBABLY!

Far too frequently, you realize that you’re missing something, which will either disconnect you from the thread of conversation or irritate you to the point of removing the filter.
I dunno, dude, if you’ve not found anything worthwhile about the person BEFORE you killfiled them, why would you suddenly want to see if they’ve developed a sense of humor or some modicum of intelligence or decorum AFTER you killfile them? That argument is nonsense and really if you feel that way and wonder what people you dislike are saying that badly, you are a special, sensitive, magical princess indeed.
what happens if someone you killfile starts a thread? do you never see it?

sam you still see the thread just without the original question
hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%
fluffy: yes. you could also have multiple killfiles for different users and be thread-specific in the “Included Pages” list. Probably easier to edit that one time per thread than keep turning users on and off!
Tom, I went back to Andrew’s script, looked at it for a second, slapped myself in the head, and removed the // from the front of the ignoreUser line. Jaq was my test-killee (pretty impossible to misspell) and it worked. But now I’ve gone back to it to try to kill GZeus’s current screen name, and it won’t work again, either with spaces or with plus signs in place of the spaces.
hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%
Actually I was just wondering how quickly I could read ILX if I kilxor’d Ned, Ally, kate, jaymc, etc.
No no no no no not screen name!! user name!! the “Rock Hardy” to your “PEW research center”
You should work in tech support.
Not that I’d ever do such a thing...
(self xpost)
I should work in interface design/data presentation
RH, that was one that gave me fits on ole-ILX. Tried it with spaces and +s and eventually made it the first one on the list, which (maybe coincidentally or maybe because of the case issue) worked.
Okay, FIXED. GZeus is blocked. THANX FOR PATIENTS, GUISE!
Okay, so now you can tell me the Mac version.
Er, you can mail it to me. No need to bore everyone!
it works basically exactly the same way
It’s exactly the same, but it only works with firefox.
Shouldn’t be too tricky to write for one of the Safari scripters (he says without having looked at what Creammonkey will do, natch)
Okay, I get it now. What you’re saying is that if I read the thread with the instructions on it, I can learn to do the thing. Interesting.
hot tip: killfiling ned speeds up load times by 37%
lol etc. but the truth is killfiling (at least with these client-side scripts) slows load times a little (proportional to thread length). exactly how much slower depends on your CPU. fyi.
way to kill the buzz, dude
Ally’s running shit on some Win98 beige pizza box at work and doesn’t seem to have a performance problem!
I was wondering if that was my imagination. (re very slight slowdown)
accentmonkey, I’m emailing you the exact script file I’m using. Still a pain to have to uninstall and open the file in TextEdit for every change I want to make, but at least I can say I got it to work. Otherwise, follow the first four paragraphs of Tom’s original post here.
Winner. Thanks Rock.
RH, I thought I told you that you didn’t need to uninstall the script to make changes! (That’s Killfile humor there, folx.)
i.e. if you’re in Firefox, right-click (if you’re not using Macs!) on the Greasemonkey icon, select “Manage User Scripts,” select Kilxor (or whichever you have), hit “Edit,” and voila! No more Ned Raggett.
i’d really like a killfile for life.
Lee, I’ve been doing exactly that and “Edit” doesn’t bring the script up for me to edit. Nothing happens.
userscripts.org has lots of cool scripts— I made one a while back — http://userscripts.org/scripts/show/6619
Okay, I went to diveintogreasemonkey.org to see if they addressed this inability to edit scripts inside the app. Found this:
In the left-hand pane, select [script name] and click Edit. This should open the installed version of [script name] in your favorite text editor. (If it doesn’t, verify that .js files are associated with your favorite text editor.)
I assume that’s what the part about going into about:config and changing greasemonkey.editor is about. Is there somewhere in there to specifically link all .js files to an app?
wtf is this? (from the script site)
Google goes black
Google goes black to save world (if google was black we would save 30,000 megawatts a year)
All the energy from making Google’s page light up white on monitors costs 30,000 megawatts a year, apparently. That script makes it black.
yeah, I guess I should have said I got that much. but still, that seems a random thing to script for. why not just tell people how to create their own style sheets. or maybe even worry about something more important? (how many megawatts does ilx use per year?)
try creating a plain textfile and saving it to the desktop, then change the file extension from “.txt” to “.js”—then openit up again and see if you get textedit or if you’re directed to choose an app, in which case, hey, textedit.
OK the bulbs used for backlighting monitors don’t actually turn off when you make some pixels black. that’s the dumbest shit that ever happened.
They also have a script that disappears the world when mommy puts her hands over your eyes.
Works for CRTs though.
shut up, gzeus.
Cool, sorted at home as well as work.
RH, I actually remember having the problem you described, but I don’t think I figured it out before a newer version of FF was released, which fixed the bug. Do you have an older (i.e. before v.1.5) version?
No, I’m up to date, 2.0.0.1.
I made TextEdit the defaut app for .js files, but it didn’t have any effect on Firefox/Greasemonkey.
I am, I think, a bit sad to realise there’s so many ILXors I know and love who don’t have the nornmal amount of self control to just chuckle and ignore the various tools and irritants on ILX, and honestly feel this thing is neccesary.
Especially if it results in things like Kate being serious and she honestly thinks this gives her license to start acting like a 5 year old, which is just petty.
I enjoy laughing at the few people on here I don’t want to read tbh *shrug*.
Also, hahaha Nabisco’s joke was subtle, but I got it.
this is going to increase my neuroses about no one liking me exponentially :(
i have no idea what a killfile is, what is going on?
this all sounds very tedious and i’m not going to bother reading this thread or anything to do with killfiles actually
so there.

hahahahaha wait, did Fluffy Bear just get called GZeus?????????
ste-kit
I assumed that slockli was making a killfile joke.
probably ignorant question: I find Andrew’s script more usable cos it’s got the “post by ignored user [name] removed” line in it, is there any particular benefit in using kilxor instead?
IF YOU CAN’T RESIST THE URGE TO LOOK
I had trouble getting Andrew’s script to work for more than one user. xpost.
;_;
in my kf i changed “post by ignored user [name] removed” to be “posts by [name] are stupid and should not be read by anyone” for laffs
oh riiiiight! i suppose the double hr line thing that kilxor leaves you with is easy to overlook, so it looks like no-one’s posted and you can pretend they don’t exist, instead of thinking ‘haha i am ignoring you and you don’t know it (or care)’ each time. it is for better people than I am. =[
really, Jessie? andrew’s script is fine for more than one user for me, just putting them on successive lines, i had more trouble getting kilxor to work (mostly because i am thick).
Jon I would nevar put you on an ignore list fwiw =)
Trayce “enjoys your work.”
Hahaha.
Wait, out of its context that sounds BAD!
i couldn’t make andrew’s script work at all :-( what OS are you using, cis?
OSX tiger? I think my firefox is up to date also. istr that Andrew made two different versions of his script and the second, which didn’t need spaces replaced with +, worked for me.
hmm, i shall investigate further. i switched back to firefox 1.5.7 a while ago, so maybe that’s my problem. on the other hand, there’s something almost sooting about not even noticing that posts are disappearing.
killfiles are fucking gay.

Also, they’re mods, so it would be counter-productive.

The only thing I will crybaby about is that I don’t think I should have to install and run a completely different web browser in order to get access to killfile functionality. That is a minor WAAAAAAAAAAAAH, though.
Dan, what browser do you use?
IE. I am lazy.
Oh man you love viruses :D
It took minutes to install firefox. It took, like, lifetimes to read “ILX, a plea”. Compare and contrast.

life is so rough!

Ouch.
This is an interesting experiment, but I have absolutely no interest in applying it myself. I am curious if anyone is killfiling me, though, and there’s one or two people who I might even wish would do so.
