yes, Leslie is awesome!
1) Culture...NO has traditions that are both uniquely American and found nowhere else in the country/world
2) A lot of the people who lost their homes lived there their whole lives, owned their homes, etc.. What’s a good argument for not allowing them even the chance to rebuild on property that they own?
3) How would you feel if Chicago got bombed out and you lost everything you owned, and you were told to forget about it and start up somewhere else?
you should have said, “whatever, go get yourself a shirt, lady!”
Did she take her shirt off? Did I leave too soon?
I’d like to know how you all would have answered. Give me a good argument.
letting a historic city sink into the muck is the kind of thing failing empires do. We should try to keep up appearances, at the very least.
OTM
(I’m not good at good arguments unfort.)
FYI: Elizabeth from C4N4ST4 is going to be on CHECK PLEASE tonight at 8 PM.
xpost “And on this marshy place once stood the great city of New Orleans, which suffered a massive flood and was left to rot by the already crumbling American civilization.”
the federal government stopped picking up the tab for towns along the mississippi river in iowa and missouri that were in flood prone areas. the rationalization being that if you build in a place that is prone to flooding (for the sake of argument let’s say a city below sea level and surrounded by the sea) then you shouldn’t be surprised at the results.
just playing devil’s advocate.
Well, it’s not like the people who are currently homeless because of Katrina are the ones who decided to put the city there. Also, Chicago is built on a swamp that some clever engineer filled in so I figured we could start sinking any minute.
MAN this hangover... she just gets worse and worse.

Oooo! Exciting! Do you know what restaurant she picked?
She picked a Japanese grocery/market in Arlington Heights, I forget what it’s called.
Well, the fed government also said the levys would hold and dragged their heels on improving/reinforcing them for decades. If they had held then the overflow and the storm damage would have been comparatively minor.

that’s the argument I would make. the federal government has an obligation.
I just saw on the little elevator TV that the US has the highest rate of depressed people in the world, followed by Ukraine.
USA! USA!
ours is a physically, culturally, and spiritually toxic environment
Next thread title?
no. it’s beef, love and understanding, remember?
next thread should be nick’s “beef, love, and understanding”.
that said, i’m off to mickey d’s.
Salad for lunch didn’t quite cut it. Deer carcass would have been better.
i wish i could leave work early and go out for a shot and a beer then be in bed by six o’clock.
i just entered my leave request for next month and even after taking those 4 days i still have over 170 hours of vacation left.
the point being, i need to get out of town more.
I have 19 days of vacation this year, 9 of which I have to take before the end of June. BUT AS USUAL I CAN’T DO ANYTHING ON THE OFF CHANCE THAT THE BAND MIGHT TOUR, JUST LIKE WE HAVEN’T FOR THE LAST FIVE YEARS.
Holy crap, you guys have a lot of vacation.
I wish you could buy vacation days on the black market.
well, to be fair, until this year i hadn’t taken two consecutive days off since june of ’03 and that was the only vacation i took in the last 6 years.
Almost all my vacation in the last two years has gone to band stuff. Taking an actual vacation to, like, go somewhere or relax is almost inconceivable.
(this of course was a sticking point in my last relationship)
Holy crap, you guys have a lot of vacation.
That’s 10 days (two work weeks) of yearly vacation, plus 9 carry-over days, because I kept holding on to last year’s vacation on the off chance, etc. etc. My trip to Montreal last year came from 2005’s carry-over days, once I realized that the band wouldn’t be touring before July.
Peoples who are planning on going to the GM tonight: what time are you thinking of arriving? I’m trying to work out a ride, and also considering seating, etc.
xposts I have 21 days to deal with somehow, and absolutely no clue as to what to do with them. I’m kinda leaning towards Costa Rica.
dang, you get your year’s worth of vacation right at the start of the year? i earn 6 hours of vacation for every pay period (two weeks).
has anyone recovered from their hangover enough for post work drinks? or am i flying solo?
Guys, I just realized something creepy:
6150860 (current phone number)
101586 (college ID number)
18056 (video store account number)
i don’t have a hangover. i could do something. or maybe i should save it for the gm.
someone photoshop jaymc with the number 18056 scrawled all over his face.

Peoples who are planning on going to the GM tonight:
(If everything goes according to plan, i’ll be there or in the neighborhood around 7:30. Unless we get in super early (hello iPass!) and decide to go to the hotel first.)
Dan, do you want to ride with us?
Is anyone else coming? Wanna know if we should get there early to get a booth or not...
Kr and I are still maybes — we prob won’t know until tonight.
or maybe i should save it for the gm.
— Dethrone the dictaphone, hit it in it’s funny bone (fluxion2...), February 16th, 2007.
?
Dan, do you want to ride with us?
I meant planning with 1–2 other friends who are interested in coming too, but thanks for the offer!
has anyone recovered from their hangover enough for post work drinks? or am i flying solo?
What are you thinking? I might be up for one. I’m heading downtown in a few to do the DMV thing (hi dere, procrastinated all day).
you know where i’ll be. be there around 6-ish if you’re around.
^^^^^ kinda feels like a sordid craigslist encounter now!! :D
ewwww, forget it!
you know where i’ll be.
forget it man, i’ll go someplace else! luckily my neighborhood is good for that.
i guess that still sounds pretty sordid.
Craigslist lol of the day: “FYI: I am fat, ugly, and stupid, so if looks are all you want, email someone else.”
FYI: I am fat, ugly, and stupid, so if looks are all you want, email someone else.“
so if looks are all you want, i’m stupid too.
exactly!
so if looks are all you want, i’m stupid too.
thank god there’s no ile epitaphs in the sandbox.
T—45 min to leaving for Chicago and seeing y’all’s smiling faces
“FYI: I am fat, ugly, and stupid, so if looks are all you want, email someone else.”
But this person is also stupid! What’s left? Proficiency playing drums?
See “stupid”. :D
Oh drumline joeks....
ZING
Sorry, Jordan!
holy fuck, i think time stopped about 15 minutes ago. because about 3 hours ago i was like “awesome, only 45 minutes to go!” and i still have 32 minutes left in my day.
TELL me about it.
Kevmang I don’t think I’m going to make it to you-know-where. Come to the GM tonight!
I’m back.
OK, so Jenny’s professor said that she wondered if it was an economically viable place to rebuild since it was such a poor place to begin with and it was a drain on the country’s resources even before the disaster.
I made the argument that it was culturally a very important place, and home to thousands of people, to which she responded that it’s too bad it had to happen, but culture doesn’t pay the bills.
BAD NEWS.
BA LE HAS STOPPED SELLING LEMON GRASS SAUSAGE SANDWICHES. BOOOOO.

BA LE HAS STOPPED SELLING LEMON GRASS SAUSAGE SANDWICHES. BOOOOO.
WAHT???
That’s not going to work for me.
I like the chicken. And the shrimp cake.
I want one right now.
thai food > vietnamese food
I’m starving.
Jesse just called me from the Green Mill, annoyed that no one else was there yet.
I’m not going.
you don’t go to the green mill at 8:00 unless you’re in for the long haul, yo.
ok, so, Jordan’s band gives me severe permagrin. There is no way to leave a show with a brass band like that and not feel happy. I said to someone else tonight: you can arrive at almost any other kind of show — rock, Broadway, puppetry, what have you — in a sour mood, and leave in pretty much the same mood if you really set your mind to it. Not so with this music. Brass bands force the happy out of you, like leeches. I am a believer in brass.
Ok, not like leeches at all. I take back the leeches. Leeches are decidedly not happy things. I’m going to go practice my similes now. But I still love Jordan and his band.
Other other woman that was on Check, Please! (not the violinist from Chicago) was A-nnoying.
WHY AM I UP SO EARLY?? No matter, I will drink all the espresso.
That’s almost a haiku.
Like I am almost a Japanese poet?
Alright, roommate has officially skipped out on me.
Oh, crumbelievable.
Hot Doug’s hit with fois grae fine.
Other other woman that was on Check, Please! (not the violinist from Chicago) was A-nnoying.
Agreed.
E was great, though. And she’s right on about L. Mitchell’s. I just ate there this morning, even, and it’s fine but it’s nothing freaking special. Just an omelette, people, nothing to see here.

Some restaurants in Chicago are ignoring the FG ban and serving it anyway, or offering it as a “complimentary” accompaniment to a dish since only the sale of FG is banned. Hot Doug’s was issued a warning letter which the owner framed and displays.
They should go out of business!
Who? Hot Dougs?

“In a world of very limited public health resources we’re being asked to drop some things so we can enforce a law like this,” Hadac [spokesman for the Health Department] said. “With HIV/AIDS, cancer, West Nile virus and some of the other things we deal with, foie gras is our lowest priority.”
I wanted to go to Hot Doug’s today but the Universe conspired against me.
2x
Also, hangover.
i had to take a cab home from my local last night. jameson + high life robbed me of my ability to walk.
I just bought wittle kitty beds for both kitties. This was after I noticed the smaller one sleeping in an unused paint pan I had left out, and it inspired pathos in me. I was like, “Oh, we can do better than this.”
YAY! kitty already discovered it, jumped in, and started making biscuits with her paws. She feels love.
ok, she’s back in my lap now. much as she love the cat bed, it does not generate heat. that’s fine with me. they had heated beds (for about $70), but i can’t afford that and don’t even want it. if they have heat and furriness and a partially enclosed space, they will stay there forever and will only need me for food and will never use me for warmth again. this will equal sadness.

Dobbs!
Totally unrelated: You know what drives me nuts? When people who don’t know did about how lawsuits work make a big stink about how “CRAAAAAZY” lawsuits are ruining the legal system. How can all these worthless lawsuits go to trial?!?!?!?!?!??!?!?!?!
THEY CANNOT HI DERE SUMMARY JUDGMENT
I mean, I know. I know! I’m in law skoo and thus have a specialized body of knowledge that most people don’t have. So most people don’t know about civil procedure. And that’s okay!!! I don’t want people to know about civil procedure, or else they won’t need lawyers and then the student loan people will come and harvest my organs because I can’t pay them back in real money. BUT IF THAT IS THE CASE, SHUT YR FAT MOUTH ABOUT IT, OKAY???
“CRAAAAAZY” lawsuits
define
The one that people always pull out is the “old lady sues McDonald’s b/c coffee is hot LOL” but see here for a nice summary of the, you know, ACTUAL FACTS OF THE CASE. But pretty much whenever someone hears that some jagoff filed a lawsuit against Miller because he drank a quarter keg by himself and got alcohol poisoning or something like that there’s a big “DEATH OF THE LEGAL SYSTEM OH NOES” stink, almost always made by people with 1) an agenda and 2) no fucking clue what they are actually talking about.
what agenda?
(i’m not trying to ask stupid questions, just simple ones)
Usually an argument that plaintiff’s lawsuits are ruining the medical profession, or similar.
and wow, i never knew that about the McD’s coffee case. Skin grafts? That’s some hot-ass coffee. Company refusing to pay medical bills so she was forced to sue? You never hear about that.
