Or even ... allure?

Hell, no.

Well, that it is disappointing.

i think it’s about how you wear them, more than the slippers qua slippers.

Hell, no.

i have a pair of black leather cree mocassions, with black fur detailing, and a sun motif beaded in gold and black...even those?

Kung Fu slippers!

What about khaki espadrilles?

Those espadrilles are a bit fancy smancy if you ask me.

Yeah, they look like Vans.

From what I understand, real espadrilles are just canvas hastily glued to old rope.

sewn onto old rope, and very comfortable they are too. A better pair of shoes for 5 euros can not be had.

fuck style, m&s slippers in the house all the way. hell yeah.

Is that truly “fuck style” these days? I must be out of the loop.

“I can’t wait till you get home, baby”

“Whys that”

“I’m rockin it fuck style for ya, sugar”

“What?”

“I got M&S slippers on, all the way”

im not the best prose stylist

But you can bring the thunderpants.jpg like nobody’s business, so it’s all good.

slippers are GREAT.

I like to think that it’s related to porky-pig style

what are the alternatives? socks? shoes INDOORS? *barefoot*?

Crocs.

I think you must be comfortable with your own old man style.

crocs are horrible bits of plastic. not comfy! also not very alluring?

they are so supremely comfortable that I could give a shit if they are alluring.

Toooooootally comfy. Lack of allure accusation hits the mark, tho.

Anyway, I think gents should either wear the very bottom of the “don’t give a shit” scale like cheapo Chinatown slip-ons (HI DERE BRYCE) or else have a decided preference in some particular style/brand for their own reasons and be willing to embrace the old-man style, as Miz Mis said.

Big puffy synthetic fleece things with sock tops are not approved, I think is what I’m trying to say. Either take 1) simplest and cheapest possible while still being made of natural, breatheable, biodegradeable materials, or b) pick your luxury and run with it.

Of course, Crocs fulfill neither category but they’re kind of house & errand shoes.

I’ve taken to wearing Birkenstocks with woolly socks around the house. But I am not a young man.

Hell, no.

Hi, Dan!

Hi!

What’s wrong with shoes indoors? I mean, you don’t wear slippers in the office or in the pub, do you?

(Actually I think Tim knows someone who DOES wear slippers in the office, but I may be wrong here)

There are a whole bunch of people who are (almost) unspeakably horrified at the prospect of tracking dirt and germs from the outdoors to the in-. I’m with them as far as having to re-wash floors and re-varnish the wood is concerned, or trying to un-stain the carpets or similar; those things take good time and/or money to fix. But for “germs” alone? No. Just me.

I think socks are just fine for walking aaround inside, thank you very much. Slippers are a fascist plot to get people to spend money frivolously.

OTM.

What about going out to get the paper/mail/cigarettes? One could put one’s regular shoes on but that’s such a tedious, repetitive task! And do you have stairs in yr house, Dan?

shoes = dirty

socks = feet still cold

slippers = feet cosy and warm :D

Also, if you’re concerned about how sexy your slippers are, you shouldn’t be having sex. SO SEZ DAN.

If you’re going outside, you put on shoes! It’s not that hard!

My place doesn’t have stairs but my parents’ place and my in-laws do; I’ve managed both without slippers just fine.

Okay, maybe I have unnaturally warm feet but what kind of sad, tissue-paper sex are you wearing, Lex?

I could pretend to take some amusing, lofty stance on this but quite practically speaking, socks are neither warm enough, nor sturdy enough, nor non-slip enough in my family home, which is old and drafty and has all wood floors & stairs, and where the dog occasionally spills his water on the kitchen floor and socks pick up an alarming amount of cat hair. In a clean, moderately sized apartment? Probably totally do-able!

i love slippers.

Tissue paper sex leads to cold feet, I think that should be obvious.

I find if I only wear socks on my feet, I catch my little toes on doors and table legs and it hurts like bejimminy!

lex is otm.

shoes are not always so comfy! depending on the shoes of course — but lex and i wear 8-hole cherry-red DMs, which aren’t great for a night on the sofa.

I am a total sockist.

(omg I just noticed the hilarious typo I made upthread)

Seeing as how you’re Dan Perry, I assumed it was purposeful.

Look it’s New Year’s and my game is still slightly off. Give me a week to recup.

Cup away.

Wearing slippers = officially “home”. Also: prevents drunken/exhausted falling-asleep-with-shoes-on phenomenon.

OH NO, NOT D/EFAWSO

M&S Slippers Fo’ Life.

Yeah, if you’re a person who likes that kind of thing, there’s a lot to be said for the ritual de-shooing/-suiting and donning of slippers/PJs/leisure clothes.

You can always just wear two pairs of socks, that’s what I do.

Who knew that 40% of ILX were Mr. Rogers sockpuppets?

Occasionally, I wear slippers that look like this:

leather slippers protect toes much better than socks do, and style is not the point

socks aren’t stylish either

But it is the point, of Alba’s question.

We worry too much, about style.

why is everyone so hung up about feet?

HI DERE BRYCE

Ha: Just last week Bryce stopped on Park Avenue right in front of my workplace to shift some things around in his bag and check his hair in the front window, and I had to mentally confirm that it was him by checking that he was wearing Chinatown slippers. But he finished adjusting and moved along before I could say hi.

That’s awesome!! What the poor child is gonna do when it snows, I have no idea.

Unsexy slippers are the sexiest thing of all—to be able to wear something so incredibly dowdy and still drive my husband wild with desire. Like handicapping a racehorse, fleece-lined scuffs advertise my volcanic baseline hottness.

The same applies to my general slovenliness, feral-slut hair, disinclination to change my clothes, wear makeup or give a shit in any way.

I knew it was a matter of time before ilx’s sartoriar godfather made an appearance.

sartorial.

wow. that was the most amazing thing I’ve ever read, Beth.

“feral-slut hair”!!!

I KNOW THIS ANSWER

I love slippers so much I have regularly got in the car and only realised later that I still had them on. I’ve set off for holidays twice with them on. I would happily wear them to work but The Man says I can’t.

haha I was just going to post feral-slut hair in quotes w/ exclamation points, but I see someone else has.

For the record, feral-slut hair is the most sexy hair-style.

“feral slut-hair”!!!

I just saw a man wearing the slipper whose photo Michael White posted. Without socks. With rolled-up jeans. I ran from him.

So you would not be blinded by his solar-flare level élan.

so obviously:

The sad reality in, my case, is actually this:

If I’m not barefoot, I’ll slip on an old pair of these and on weekends, when I’m doing laundry downstairs, that’s pretty often.

O temperate climes!

O intemperate mores!

House Shoes, AKA Crip Slips AKA those wide wale corduroy slipers from the army surplus or swap meet that come in black, brown and navy.

WTF is w/the $50 Volcom/Osiris/et. al skate slippers at Zumiez for $60+?

Hush puppies w/ a Volcom stone...WHY?

Slippers are fucking awful. Sloppy, usually ugly, and they just bring down the quality of any outfit, no matter how nice the rest of it is. Crocs especially make me want to start hacking off feet left and right.

Stay away from me with that hacksaw, jesus chr—HEY I MEAN IT!

It still amazes me how my mother and her friends are shocked by women over the age of 16 who don’t dye their hair, wear makeup, or generally try unnatural means to “look their best”. I told my mother that when blokes started wearing makeup, I might too.

As for slippers for blokes, I like these Hermes ones:

The Bloke doesn’t wear slippers, but instead has a pair of brown leather flip flops (possibly Timberland ones, but I am not sure) which he wears around the house. He often complains that his feet are cold though.

accentmonkey: those are part of a makeup line for men called “tout beau”, by jean-paul gaultier

My colleague’s suggestion:

That looks like you have a couple of dead squirrels lashed to your feet.

I think that’s pretty much what it is.

Personally, I’m veering towards:

Also : the clog version of australian Ugg boots (I think they are called ‘cluggs’) look rather cosy ....

Techno-colleague has suggested the inevitable USB-powered slipper.

Presumably you can’t roam too far from your USB hub though, and I suspect there would be a certain amount of wire-tripping-overage done.

CJ: I do like the look of those cluggs, much as I’ve always hated uggs.

Tracer: If you can get my Dad to wear that makeup, I will be impressed.

My ex boyfriend used to wear slippers like these, but brown:

(I thoroughly approve of slippers, BTW. I have LL Bean sleep shippers. They are toasty comfy, I’d wear them all the time, even outside, if they had better soles. They’re kind of rubber, so I can just about put out the rubbish in them, but wouldn’t wear them properly walking.)

I have very steep stairs in my house, and the stair treads are particularly narrow, making them incompatible with the wearing of most slippers esp big novelty ones such as those which Kate has posted as, while they look really cool, they’d be too dangerous. I could see myself going base-over-apex all the way down the stairs if I tripped while wearing those.

Narrow steep stairs + big slippers + my general state of sleepyheaded clumsiness = a broken neck for sure

I don’t wear big novelty slippers! That was my ex!

I wear ones like these (lower left hand corner) now. Very comfy. And with rubber soles for going down stairs. (And if you feel like going climbing about on television transmitters.)

They’re nice! They’re like a suede-y version of those jaunty deck shoes you wear on board yachts.

Yes! Except the jaunty strings keep coming untied, and I trip over those.

And there you were, trying to convince me the’d be safe to wear on my steep stairs .....

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯A month passes⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

who would wear these?

ihttp://www.rpgshop.com/images/uploaded/spiderslippers.jpeg

and cthulu slippers, subtle and stylish—try to deny.

I unconditionally endorse this stance.
