My wife has this superstition that on the first day of the month the first thing you say when you wake up has to be, “Rabbit rabbit.” Otherwise bad things happen.
Anybody ever hear of this?
Yeah!—it was in a Trixie Belden book :) I did this for many many months when I was in grade school.
I still do it when I think of it. ‘Course it’s utter useless.
I thought you were supposed to say “white rabbits” ? I think I must have been getting it wrong all these years :(

I have heard of that, but more in the context of bringing good luck rather than “bad things will happen”.
Oh and “Hello, Mr Magpie, how are you and your children” on seeing the first magpie on a month.
And not “SHUT YR CLACKING IT’S FIVE IN THE MORNING” on any given morning.
First magpie seen on any morning = you have to say “good morning, your majesty” (apparently). This might be just a local Oxfordshire thing though.

As for Magpies my mother-in-law says “Good Morning (afternoon/evening) M’Lud to EVERY magpie.

I thought it was supposed to be “Good morning Mr Magpie and how’s the wife and family?” and you only say it if there’s only one magpie (to counteract the “One for sorrow...” thing).

My other half is from Bristol and has a whole shed load of this superstitious mumbo jumbo. Anyone else heard of not doing washing on Boxing Day because you wash a member of your family away?
I’ve heard that ‘bless you’ after a sneeze is so a fairy doesn’t die, and that if you say ‘thank you’ to the person that said ‘bless you’ it dies anyway.
You’re not supposed to say thank you because in doing so you re-inhale the germs and then you die. According to my sister.
I’ve told people the ‘sneezing and not saying thank you’ thing and they all just think I’m a cnut for not saying thank you.
So I keep thanking them just to be popular and fairies die willy-nilly.
