For best I agree about the last shot of Cache.

Picking one worst moment is more tricky. Possibly the bit in Superman Returns when Superman is looking over his mothers farm and...er...keeps looking and I realised that this was going to be a long 2 and a half hours.

the last THREE shots of Cache, actually. all completely stationary, put together about 20 minutes of motionless devastation/redemption.

the single moment of extreme violence in that same film also worth a shout.

the womb scene in ‘a cock and bull story’ also very much up there, although as i haven’t yet seen ‘borat’ i’m probably not one to judge the comedy moment of the year.

Daniel Craig admiring himself in the mirror.

Clive Owen escaping from baddies by trying to jumpstart a car in muddy socks in a field, in the middle of nowhere.

When it seemed like Keira Knightley’s character in Pirates of the Caribbean II might get killed.

I nominate the blood-splattered camera following Clive Owen into the bombarded tower block.

If Clive Owen keeps making good films I will have to reconsider my opinion of him based purely on my dislike of Chancer. Which will no doubt relieve him greatly.

“Last of the Summer Wine” moment?

The trailer for The Pursuit of Happyness

^worst, that is^

Isn’t The Pursuit of Happiness one long trailer?

happYness, Alfred. (That’s how the children of Horatio Alger spell it, apparently)

Bill Nighy doing that “pwut” thing as Davy Jones. Or the bit where he’s playing the organ. I dunno I just LOVE POTC2:DMC to be honest.

Mystique getting ‘cured’ in X-Men 3 (which I finally saw the other day—not so great but I nominate the aforementioned scene for ‘aesthetic’ reasons).

I liked the bit where Johnny Depp and Ornaldo Bloomps and Miles from This Life all get off the big wheel thing when it crashes in the sea and are supposed to be running away but end up staggering around in all different directions and falling over a lot.

Hugo Weaving blowing up Parliament in V is for Vendetta.

Cache remains most overregarded sadism of any year

NAKED WRESTLING BORAT: THE BEST

happYness, Alfred. (That’s how the children of Horatio Alger spell it, apparently)

I want to see the movie just so can I find out why the fuck it’s spelled wrong.

i’m guessing it’s to show that happiness is dependent on just being happy—like he does all this work so his family can have a better life—then he realizes that he’s got so much to appreciate and be happy for in the moment regardless of external circumstances.

(although now that i think abt the trailer this is probably totally wrong and the movie likely has a totally republican materialistic worldview)

Dr M you’re thinking of “Irreversible”

No, most ppl seem to evaluate Noe as a less competent fraud than Haneke.

NAKED WRESTLING BORAT: THE BEST

yes... well, it runners-up the scene in Dave Chappelle’s Block Party when Erykah Badu rips off her ‘fro wig.

“Fraud”? Did he not actually make a movie? I could have sworn I saw one after I’d paid for my ticket.

I meant the significance part

the scene chosen as the best moment in “Keane” is definitely the one scene that does. not. work.

the guy from Crank and Varsity Blues girl banging in Chinatown

the Medulla Oblongata line from Miami Vice (also: “there’s undercover and there’s which way is up” exchange)

drinking horse semen in Jackass, everyone talking about how ashamed they were afterward.

“How’s your mother?” “On her way out.” “We all are—act accordingly.”

if yr gonna pick one from miami vice it’s just got to be: I“M A FIEND 4 MOJITOZ!!!

Go fuck yourself.

I’m tired from fucking your wife.

How is your mother?

Good, she’s tired from fucking my father.

I think I like The Departed much more in retrospect. Will probably love it when it comes out on DVD.

i liked it more the second time

I’m gonna go have a smoke right now. You want a smoke? You don’t smoke, do ya, right? What are ya, one of those fitness freaks, huh? Go fuck yourself.

oh i want see again again

Marriage is an important part of getting ahead. It lets people know you’re not a homo. A married guy seems more stable. People see the ring, they think, “at least somebody can stand the son of a bitch.” Ladies see the ring, they know immediately that you must have some cash, and your cock must work.

Ohhh it’s workin’...hehehe...OVAHtime

I didn’t realize there was an article at the top of this thread. I’m astonished this thread has managed to avoid another Spielberg Munich sex-scene smackdown.

I’ve pushed those images out of my head.

Nominee for worst = the final dance scene in Little Miss Sunshine

which, btw, is sort of ripped off from the Little Miss Springfield episode of The Simpsons

Worst:

— discussion of Madame Bovary, Little Children

— eye test gone awry, Little Miss Sunshine

— sundae, bloody sundae, Flags of Our Fathers

— the climactic diorama presentation, Strangers with Candy

— sex offender in the pool, everybody get down, Little Children

Best:

— Badu, as mentioned

— naked wrestling, as mentioned

— death in the dressing room, A Prairie Home Companion

— trailer stand off, Miami Vice

— everything Alec Baldwin or Mark Wahlberg say or do, The Departed

BIG WILLIE AND THE TWINS.

DRIVE MONKEY DRIVE!!!—Grandma’s Boy

best = the Locomotion number in film I won’t spoil (most of you will see it)

best=“yeah, but you can still get a cab, right?”

Jack Sparrow pops out of a grave, oblivious to the waterwheel bearing down on him.

Worst=when we are told by Dustin Hoffman that Emma Thompson is supposed to be a wonderful writer, after listening to her horrible smug witterings for two thirds of Stranger Than Fiction.

lol

BIG WILLIE AND THE TWINS.

Totally forgot that came out this year.

sorry, while the naked wrestling was exhilarating, it’s still just Diluted John Waters (and SBC blacking out his genitals = Dud).

oh yeah, since I saw it in January, 6 or 7 scenes from Munich are the best obv. Also, the rippling giant flag in Battle in Heaven, and that guy pissing himself.

And the long tavern scene early in 4.

For a moment I thought you were still thinking about the Matt Damon scene.

Borat vs Damon with the shvanzes unobscured would be worth watching (no dick in The Good Shepherd either)

best: fart bubble in Jackass 2

also from Jackass 2, the booze enema, the leech in eye and, yeah, the finale

more best:

Ingmar Bergman telling interviewer he and wife fled LA after rejecting invite to Streisand pool party

Steve Coogan with hot chestnut down pants, A Cock and Bull Story

Best: “Does it look like we need the money?” line from Casino Royale

Worst: Hugh Jackman shoving all the crap off his desk in The Fountain

A better moment in Pan’s Labyrinth than the mouth-stitching is when the monster man with all the food wakes and starts to tap his fingers on the table. I got to thinking about it as I was getting ready for bed last night and ended up hiding my head under the duvet and concetrating on nice thoughts!

worst: Ethan Hawke “cool uncle” in Fast Food Nation indistinguishable from his loathsome horndog in those insipid Before movies

‘Cool uncle’ is synonymous with ‘loathsome horndog,’ dude.

yeah, but not when you seem to be mackin on yr niece

No way. Ethan Hawke’s bit in the movie was the least forced bit of the entire movie. If any scene deserves to be isolated in ignomy, it’s the attempted cow rescue.

Of course, I could just be mistaking a general hatred of Hawke, in which case, carry on.

Being as I mostly watched things like Cache and Pan’s Labyrinth this year I didn’t actually get a lot of rofles in the cinema but I laughed out loud at the bit in Deck The Halls when Danny De Vito is naked in the back of his car trying to raise Broderick’s body temperature.

The two images that stand out most in my mind from Pan’s Labyrinth are: 1. the Pale Man eating those poor squirming fairies, and 2. the Captain breaking that guy’s fucking face in with the wine bottle.
