783 people kill themselves every year jumping off the NYU library, this is a fact.

wha

where is the FLUNK OUT thread

look it up

xpost........mmmmmmmmmaybe.

783 people killed themselves at the library WHILE I WORKED THERE and 500 of them LIVED ON MY FLOOR

you should’ve brought a pony to the student lounge, that cheers everyone up.

WOW!!

best pinata ever.

“Temporarily” dropping out next semester. Broke, weighing pros and cons of faking my death.

+ kittens

this does look like a really cool place to jump, i must admit:

dropout... get it?

my favorite part is the steel umbrella over the info desk

I dropped out of college not once but TWICE.

it’s for safety

although it’s perforated iirc, so you’d still get bits and pieces all over yourself

xxpost

i qualify for both

me too! I dropped out of an ivy! wicked

there is a lot of plexiglass paneling at bobst so it’s harder to jump now.

that picture almost gives me vertigo. good thing our library only has 3 floors. seriously, if you wanted to jump off a building and be sure to die...well, you’d have trouble with that.

i wish that there was an online pic of the interior of rutgers’ alexander library — when it was remodeled in the mid-90s, they built an internal courtyard/reading area over what was previously the brick-coated exterior. you could look down from the windows into the internal reading area — and, presumably, open up one of the windows and jump 30–50 feet to a certain death (or at least permanent paralysis).

There was a girl at MIT who set herself on fire a few years ago, that was nasty.

mit is the capital of crazy-ass suicides

if you are in princeton, and you want to kill yourself, then climbing to the top of the tower on firestone library and jumping would probably also do the trick:

our library was terrifying and musty and looked like resident evil was about break out regularly.

A Harvard grad student jumped out of a 7th-floor window at UHS the year I graduated. That was also nasty. Also a baseball player jumped in front of a subway train during rush hour.

I once dated a fellow who went to Cornell. He told me they closed of the bridges over the gorges in Ithaca during finals to prevent any jumpers. I don’t know if it always worked.

A friend of mine at Cornell said that in September of her freshman year some drunk guy fell off one of the bridges and died.

I dropped out of college not once but TWICE.

Me too, two seperate universities.

My best friend roomed next to a guy that slept in a coffin.

Yeah, pretty much. Puppetry major.

ok wtf at “Puppetry major”

HI DERE, LIKE MY THESIS???

What, isn’t “puppetry major” accepted shorthand for “dude that sleeps in coffin, paints his face & teases his hair to look like Robert Smith, and once went to campus Halloween party completely naked”?

[misunderstood xpost]

i think i know like three “puppetry majors.” dan, are you from the alternate universe minneapolis that doesn’t have hippies or something?

All our hippies were gov or chemistry majors.

I dropped out of college not once but TWICE.

— Dragons (per the previous FAQ answer) (nklshs@ilx.biz), December 12th, 2006. (later)

mE TOO. I saved so much money by doing so.

And by doing so, I joined Sheryl Crow and Brad Pitt on the Mizzou Unalumni list.

our library was terrifying and musty and looked like resident evil was about break out regularly.

I had such a crush on Butler, but when I went back to visit they had installed a coffee shop and new wood panelling and it just wasn’t the same.

i am a dropout. i finished all my course work but still owe a few papers for classes which have long since lapsed to incompletes. i had to get a job and pay for myself after my dad died, so, no more college for me after a certain point. I regret it because i’m theoretically very close to having my degree and really should try to get it worked out with the university, but it’s difficult to do that when you work 50 hours a week and have a baby and your school years are a decade in the past.

I should’ve understood what kind of relationship I was going to have with higher education when I decided on my first day of classes that it was a good idea to drive 6 hours away to see Neil Young (which inevitably meant 6 hours drive back, giving me approximately 45 minutes between [still fucked up out of my gourd] re-arrival and Biology 101). But Neil & the boys sure did rock that night!

783 people killed themselves at the library WHILE I WORKED THERE and 500 of them LIVED ON MY FLOOR

oof. my friend lived with one of them. where in the lib did you work?

DID NOT GO 2 KEWL 4 SKOOL F U NURZ

Dropped out once, might do it again.

the library at my college was designed by an architect who forgot to account for the weight of all the books that would fill it. it was torn down about 40 years after it went up because it was slowly sinking into the ground. they built a new, shiny one that looks like it has the same interior designer as a swedish preschool.

worked the stacks, N and P.

xxpost

is there a concurrent stoodent (since we’re making w/the mispellings) thread?

a-ha. i’m a TX, PS, and NX man myself.

Just about every British university has an urban myth that the library’s architect didn’t take the weight of the books into account. My university definitely had people who believed in that myth, and it definitely wasn’t true.

(although the University of Kent did have one building which collapsed into a disused railway tunnel its architect had forgotten about)

Wow FP I had no idea you were a Britisher. Good job.

Snopes page on the “sinking library” myth:

http://www.snopes.com/college/halls/sinking.asp

um i think i’ve dropped out of 5 colleges....

I dropped out. As always. I never have any nightmares about that, but some nights I do break into sweats about not having finished highschool, which I actually did do. I should have been able to finish university but I just didn’t see the point (at the time). Maybe I’ll regret it one day, but for now it was the best decision I could have done: I just couldn’t see myself being a child psychologist and witness all the sadness.

It wasn’t until my second year of art school that the administration realized I was a high school dropout and insisted I get a GED. Two days of testing rather than two years of high school!!! Then I dropped out of art school. Finished a college undergrad degree, but only because—weirdly, considering my lack of real schooling—they accepted me as a junior.

At age 50 I have finally stopped having nightmares about being back in school.

To all you drop outs, I have a question. Should I drop out before I flunk out? Which one is classier?

dropping out might provide more satisfaction, but they’re both really solid options.

I have one or two nightmare a year that I failed one class senior year (usually government, which is odd—I even killed on the AP test for that one) and someone figured it out and now I’m having to go every other day for a semester to make it up even though I have my diploma. (Clear implication: I’m still in the same town and bitter about it.)

A new twist on that one is having to attend one class in junior high while in my dream I’m in high school or college.

Between these and recurring waitmares, I’d kill for some nice, normal serial killer-torture dreams.

one side of the library at zoo-mass was sinking but it had nothing to do with the weight of books and everything to do with the rapid growth of the physical plant of the university and the changes to the water table/drainage of the campus.

I ‘flunked out’ after my two semesters (cumulative GPA—.43 or something) but they let me back in after a semester.

Dropping out before you flunk out is generally preferable.

You got lucky Alex; those are the best letters.

Hey, my ex-alma-mater really DID have library problems!

“The Homer Babbidge Library at the University of Connecticut at Storrs has been plagued with problems since its erection in 1978, suffering from a bulging brick facade and concrete floors sagging under their own weight. Five different contractors worked on those walls, and a common suspicion was that the concrete used in the floor pour had been watered. Engineers and architects blamed the problems on design flaws, substandard materials, and shoddy workmanship; meanwhile, the edifice underwent an $18 million repair project in 1995 to correct its problems.”

I am considering dropping out!

HI DERE

if i were still in school, i would have one semester left before graduation but honestly, i’m soooo much happier than any of my former classmates.

akm, do you live in the U.S.? University Without Walls, through UMASS, is an easy way to finish your degree—and they do long distance learning. Might be expensive for out of state, but they’d probably work with you to make it quick and easy.

NEVER FORGET

I had a dream that I was back in school last night =:O

I also had a dream that John Madden interrupted some kind of “science murder” investigation being conducted by [redacted person] and myself to make us all watch http://niggastolemyyoshi.ytmnd.com. I was all like wtf, you’re being rude and then someone who I didn’t know was like, “You need to read this man’s writings” all serious like Madden is a religion. Then Madden invited everyone to “lesbian baseball” which was pretty cool of him.

That made up for the “in school” dream.

UH sorry to mistake this for dreams thread, I never have dreams and then two vivid ones in one night is fucking with me. back to dropping out!

Oh God, I dreamed that I was back in school for YEARS. ACK!

It was really awful. I don’t even remember what exactly happened, like somehow it caught up to me that I didn’t actually pass my economics class and they took away my degree was the plot and I was trying to figure out methods around this that didn’t involve going back to that class ever again.

I was going to share my dropout experience but that madden dream has thrown me a bit, to be honest.

i used to have dreams about being thrown back into high school, too — that i hadn’t passed some bullshit class or other, and there i was stuck in a classroom with kids 5 years younger than me.

I read John Madden’s writings when I was in middle school

I read some awesome books about hockey too but I don’t remember what they were called!

i dropped out of school twice—both times i failed all my classes at the semester because i missed finals (medical reasons)—but eventually i graduated. i graduated five years ago, but i still have crazy nightmares about missing finals.

to be honest I was a total dork and read everything in the entire public library, not only books about football

hey maybe i should go back to school just so i can mess up and drop out of another school

is there a way this could be performance art y/n

y

dar1a you are awesome except for the redskins thing

i might as well have dropped out

haha i just ws up (k AM up, train leaves in 4 hrs) visiting my ‘alma mater’ wich refused to allow me to continue attending

i ws up for the wkend of feb 2nd, supposed to leave feb 5th. it is now feb 12th. i missed college so much i missed my trains! 6 times!

call me stupid (cause i am of course) but why kill yourself if you can drop out? ok, i know, i know, they are depressed... but still... :-(

Way to not understand depression, nathalie.

For example, it can be seen as kind of embarrassing/a sign of failure to have to drop out, not really what you need when you already feel shite. I found telling my parents I was dropping out of university one of the hardest things I’d ever had to do in my life. But I had to do it. And they understood. Not everyone else is that lucky.

i know, ailsa, i know. i do understand depression... i just find it so depressing that they can’t see that there’s another way out. i remember telling my parents and it was EXTREMELY hard... my mom didn’t (and still doesn’t?) understand. she found i just quit and you (i) shouldn’t do that.

“One Knee Equals Two Feet” = this is why I failed math 6 times isn’t it.

Depression not all bunnies and cupcakes! Hold the front pages!

ailsa, WOW, did not realize this despite being in one. *sigh*

having been in one. maybe i slipped here...

Right, so surely you should understand that sometimes people just want to die and can’t see anything past that? And that no-one (complete tools with hearts of stone excluded) thinks that it’s a barrel of laughs? I don’t think you need to have suffered depression to know it’s depressing when people get so desperate that they can’t see light in anything.

i am ‘taking time off.’ i don;t really intend to go back if i can help it, despite the fact that i only have one semester left. if i don;t end up in new york this summer (fingers crossed), i probably will finish it up.

ps- i am not in school because i was pretty much ready to jump off of this building here, onto the walkway below. brutal(ist).

they make it so easy to get on the roof!

if you’re implying what i think you are, leo...

seriously, what are you saying?

i’m saying that there is a sundeck in the middle and you can just drag a table to the edge and put a chair on it and climb onto the roof and jump off and we are lucky that people haven’t done it

(i posted this before i think, but so it captures my experience exactly)

telling your parents you dropped out:

tell me about it. all the parents talk about is ‘job job job job job.’ FUCK OFF I AM READING.

(also sorry lfam, as i said, i was in a weird place last night).

(we are lucky no one’s done that. did you ever hear about the people rappelling down the side of the building, though? that was apparently a sight to see)

⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯Two months pass⎯⎯⎯⎯⎯

:D

i missed unemployed youth!

test

i should’ve never went back to college because it didn’t do a damn thing for me. oh well, at least i never went back to high school? except high school is free and college wasn’t, i did things all wrong ;_1

parents just don’t understand

this one is impossible to even mention around my mom because she’s like “oh, if only you’d finished your master’s” & none of these responses yet have worked—“it’s not useful for anything/I am not able to do the work/I’m an adult and I say no/if you want an ivy league degree so badly plz get one yourself”

my mom was like that for a while too. i had an $80k per year job at age 20 and she was still like, “well if you’d just go back to college you’d be doing so well for yourself”

ps i now have a $40k job per year. thanks mom.

my mom’s general outlook on life is “woe is everything” though, i shouldn’t take it personal

at least i’m free now, except for the debt, but i’ll take the debt over another year of scraping by on a $14k stipend and being utterly miserable 100% of the time
