For the board’s TRUE elitists!

(undergrad & grad both welcome, altho obv undergrad >>>> grad)

(hee)

tempted to start english equivalent but would be instantly slaughtered by dom’s long-range shoulder-mounted chip launcher

Most of the Ivies are pretty much shit at the undergraduate level.

“Pretentious? Moi?”

Dan, on Friday night I was talking with D34n and R0bbie about schools (they both went to the U of MN). I mentioned that you had gone to Harvard for computer science. They wanted to know why you hadn’t decided on MIT or similar if computer science was your intended major. I realize now that I should have said, “I don’t know, maybe he wanted to be able to get a date...” (Er, no offense to MIT grads, of course.)

HARVARD MEDICAL SCHOOL PROFESSOR STRANGLES KITTY, PHOTOGRAPHER

jon’s mad

Wait, how did I miss that Dan Perry was a computer nerd all these years?

(xpost: I totally wanted to go to MIT until I visited there and realized it was run by robots. And not cool robots, either.)

(xxpost: BECAUSE UNLIKE SOME OF U NERDS I DON’T ADVERTISE LIKE A 10-BIT WHORE)

Shouldn’t that be 8-Bit Whore?

Hey, I don’t have a single student loan, so I’m ok with going to a no-name school!

xpost I thought the reason you didn’t have student loans was cos yr parents can afford shit like $10,000 dogs?

10-Bit Whore = 2-Bit Whore in compspeak

2 nybble whore

Louis OTM

Wait, how did I miss that Dan Perry was a computer nerd all these years?

I know all Dan Perry’s secrets*! But I didn’t think that was one of them.

*This may actually not be true.

Dan, I’m glad you didn’t turn into an uncool robot. Because that would have been the most serious risk.

I thought the reason you didn’t have student loans was cos yr parents can afford shit like $10,000 dogs?

massive scholarship awarded solely on basis of SAT scores and maintaining GPA

I didn’t have any loans, either!

But actually, back to the reason I started this thread:

HI DERE HARVARD DROPOUT!

Even no-name schools are expensive these days. The money thing is scary. Minnesota’s most expensive (and prestigious) college, Carleton is now over 40K per year.

I see that Harvard had more attractive students than St. Mary’s, St. Olaf, Carleton, and St. Kate’s.

Carleton is hardly a no-name school, if that’s what you meant

Most of the Ivies are pretty much shit at the undergraduate level.

compared to what?

ahem

;-)

oh geez

dan that girl’s bobbings job looks bad, plz keep to halle berry’s bobbings job pictures instead :\

she looks like a tranny

more like hilary duff

Carleton is hardly a no-name school, if that’s what you meant

Certainly not. My point is that it is incredibly pricey, compared to say, the semi-pricey other private colleges. Even the public universities are getting to be kind of pricey.

(Full disclosure: my husband works at Carleton and I have two kids to send to college, but not for another 10 years, when college will be even more hopelessly expensive.)

Not a drop-out, but a classmate of mine.

Traci Bingham is like an extended exercise in Fascinatingly Tacky.

xpost: Colin yr classmate is A+ Awesome-o

dudes I only saw Julia Stiles on campus ;_;

my school has a fantastic football team so you know. . .

what my classmates are going to be doing: investment banking medical school investment banking grad school consulting investment banking medical school missionary work and investment banking

i really don’t see any of my classmates becoming rock stars....

Most of my classmates are doctors, lawyers, consultants or professors. A couple are entertainers. I met a couple of murderers but they’re both dead now.

cosign, except for the murderers part, wtf.

tho, some local kids killed two of our profs when i was undergrad, so maybe that counts?

Above pictured classmate is also an associate professor of law.

was supposed to be in my class in college, but she was making a movie so she showed up a year late.

almost without exception my former classmates are lawyers. losers.

xpost

That seems right—that guitar and haircut are the kind of guitar and haircut that an associate professor of law would have.

Above pictured classmate is also an associate professor of law.

:o

Carleton is a great school if you want to do shit-tons of drugs and hang out with 80% rich, effette assholes and 20% your underpriveleged brethren.

/bitterness

(The drugs were good though.)

i didn’t even bother trying to get into an ivy. i really doubt i would have made it but i kind of wonder.

xpost i can’t remember the GAC chant about carleton. i can only remember the one about MSU

Carleton private schools is a are great school if you want to do shit-tons of drugs and hang out with 80% rich, effette assholes and 20% your underpriveleged brethren.

does anyone who went to an Ivy League school actually ever think ‘I went to an Ivy League school’? (don’t answer that)

I think I attracted killers up until around age 25.

xpost: HOLY SHIT RUUD H, YOU MAY KNOW A GOOD FRIEND OF MINE FROM YR UNDERGRAD DEPENDING ON WHEN YOU WERE AT THAT SCHOOL

you can do that without going to school for god’s sake, people.

xpost, yes, you, and you tell us about it, regularly.

ha, gbx beat me to it

I definitely identify with the school I went to, but not the fact that it’s an Ivy

tho, some local kids killed two of our profs when i was undergrad, so maybe that counts?

evan, was this in nh or vt by any chance?

Dan, really, which school are you saying you met killers at?

(ps I know that this is a no bandwith thing but I like it and find it appropriate somehow)

hahahaha Sara, that’s kind of the point! I can count both high school AND college!

this thread should probably be deleted :-/

xp otto: yeah. murder in nh, locals from vt. killed two profs with an ICE AXE. bos globe called me for a statement cuz i was PREZ of the mountaineering club and they wanted to know if we were missing axes :o

my first class at Columbia me and this other dude who is now married and lives in Massachusetts and has a baby or something like that, anyway, we realized that at least three of our classmates had indeed killed people (former military from around the globe). this was a class of ten people, and that was kind of unsettling, especially since one of those people was the most incredibly batshit insane probably-going-to-lash-out-one-day-and-murder-the-teacher type of people you’d ever met.

was a year or two ahead of me, Danno.

well shit, if we’re going to count military ppl that killed, then my current institution trumps any ivy.

i totally remember that, happened right before i made my first trip back east after moving to chicago.

yeah, I think you should just count people who have killed people, it makes the conversation a lot broader and funnier.

I went to high school with this dude. He was definitely... out of the ordinary.

I probably shouldn’t be laughing at Dan’s murderer-attracting ways. But I am.

John, possibly due to the drug issue, failed to mention the numerous naked people at Carleton in the early 90s. Carleton students were nerveless then. Or maybe that was drug-related, too.

(multi-xpost)

(but it’s not like I knew him or anything)

Actually RH, you might have graduated right before he got there. Do you remember a cellist named 0wen Y0ung, though? He’s playing with the BSO now and is a total dude.

is the “ivy” atmosphere really stressful and crazy? or is that myth mostly.

That is entirely dependent upon your major/work ethic.

Hm, looks like they both officially graduated when I did. I guess JB only showed up 6 months late.

No, Dan, the only 0wen I knew was an 0wen R4mb0 (Rimb4ud?)

I found it stressful and most people got progressively more crazy unless they were robots, but this was grad level

Did you know a singer named J0 Schl3g3l?

one of my classmates invented the wikipedia logo....

daria what did you study?

(also i don’t go to an ivy but i need something to do besides study for my finals right now. hi ilx!)

Nope, Dan.

It was 0w3n R4mb0w, actually. Looks like he is now a CompSci prof at Columbia.

I did know a cellist name of B4rb4r4 W!ll. She went to some music camp with some other people I knew, called Greenwood maybe. Their was also a K4ty Gr33nb4um, who went to that camp and may have been at school with me.

francais ! I burned out on it pretty quick, I can’t write any more term papers

HI DERE I WENT TO IVIE B?COZ I GOT HUGE SKOLURSHIP? CDNT AFFORD UINVERSITY OV OREGUN? ALSO 4 HOT BABEZ AND TO BE A FAMIS WRITRE

(also i don’t go to an ivy but i need something to do besides study for my finals right now. hi ilx!)

Maria e, are you my doppelganger? Actually, I’m going to study the digestive system in the car while I pick my son up now. After that, though, more procrastination!

Ken L, did you hang out with $t33\/3 |>!#@3?

Nope. I did hang out with $t33v3 M4rk, though.

And Mr. Fine Wine, of course.

fine wine is good people, what about &!j%%3 W4%13?

I think you people are just making up these names at this point.

You are making people up.

Whoops cross post

optins, I don’t know if I know those people or not, your g00gleproofing might as well be $4n$kr!+

I wish Rutgers could have a crest with “A lot of people out of state think we’re an Ivy!” in Latin as its motto.

i grew up in the town of princeton, does that count?

So wait, does 0xf0rd Un1vers1ty count on this thread or not?

I think that, due to age alone, 0xf0rd and C4mbr1dg3 trascend this thread.

i was in the same class as Cynthia Nix0n (if you consider columbia/barnard the same school—i do). lol her @ all-girls school, that’s where the lesbianism started!

Does “The Harvard of the North” count?

So wait, does 0xf0rd Un1vers1ty count on this thread or not?

No, because we’re keeping Louis Jagger off it.

Dan—My brother plays chamber music with Owen Young. My brother is a pianist—also an a. murchie. For Alan.

Also—K. Gr33nabaum is one of his best friends! Such coincidences!

6 degrees of awesomeness!

Now, Alan Murch!3, him I’ve met. My old roommate, Chr!s Marc!l and his writing partner S4m Johns0n once used his name for a character on a Frasier episode.

Of course, that’s not such a big deal -they used my name once too.

Was the line, “Hey, it’s K3nny L4uterb4ch’s birthday. Hey, Kenny, happy birthday, here are some pickles!” ...?

J0hn Cunn1ngham, why you brake G00gleproofing?

No, but that was another roommate with me and Chris.

Actually, I take that last one back- Alan got a speaking part, while all I got was a mispronunciation from David Hyde Pierce.

my first class at Columbia me and this other dude who is now married and lives in Massachusetts and has a baby or something like that, anyway, we realized that at least three of our classmates had indeed killed people

The Lit Hum Mysteries

I wouldn’t have studied lit if you paid me but good try at least.

iirc Columbia men don’t get a choice

More degrees of awesomeness! The Frasier writers were Alan’s roommates, I think.

I seem to recall that he was also at one time the roommate of Nina Cr3ws and Sam’s ex-sister-in-law, 4l3xandra ‘Raj’ McG0v3rn.

I’m not entirely sure why you’ve decided to make some weird assumption that there are sexist double standards at Columbia, but in the program I was in, none of us were required to do a lit course.

both men and women in Columbia College are required to take lit hum, obv. engineering students are required to take either lit hum or cc. students in the school of general studies are not required to take either, but may do so.

dean college is the ivy league of junior colleges.

OTM

I’m not entirely sure why you’ve decided to make some weird assumption that there are sexist double standards at Columbia

Zing! Sincere apologies for any misapprehension I may have inadvertently encouraged. I was of course using the term “Columbia Men” in the traditional Ivy sense, with the attendent implication of leasy greens, gay pennants, secret societies, boathouses, elaborately coded scarves with secret flask pockets cunningly knitted within and such. per gabb, ladies have been afforded the opportunity to enjoy the full character-building benefits of the Core since 1983.

In keeping with time-honored tradition, I did indeed forget about engineering ::shame::

HI DERE HARVARD DROPOUT!

Dan, she’s actually not a *proper* Harvard student.

I’m not even sure she’s a *proper* human being.

bingo, did you go to dean? i knew some girls who went there in the early 90s.

Xpost: who cares with those bazookas!

anyone with standards?

RM, I was of course teasing you with that first line but I’m certain you realize that. You are, of course, correct that the majority of “Columbia Men” must do lit hum. Suckers.

ha ha ha ‘ivies’

i did, 94–95

I don’t know if I belong here or not. I can lay claims on the grad school, but when I run into proper undergrad Ivy pretendoids I sometimes wind up pulling a fake-ass “what is this ‘East Coast’ you speak of, I hail from the BIG TEN” schtick. (Describing NU as “Big Ten” in anything but the technical sense is probably pretty dishonest, too.)

If it makes you feel any better, I had no idea until this thread that Columbia was an Ivy League school.

Your spreadsheet sucks, dude.

well, many would say School Of General Studies isn’t, ;-)

xpost

it wasn’t until the early-mid-90s that most people had any idea Columbia existed

I would say that’s crazy gab but everyone I know significantly older than me is FROM NY so that probably skews things a bit.

nabisco I know this belongs on the other thread for us public uni turbos but NU definitely counts as Big Ten because I clearly recall peyton & co. destroying your ass in whatever crap bowl game we made it to my freshman year

LOL @ idea of Peyton winning a bowl game

bragging about beating nu in f’ball is on par with bragging about beating stevie wonder in raquetball.

well i’m exaggerating of course, but while Columbia was always a big deal in the tri-state area, it had a far lower national profile than some other ivies (or at least the big 3, tho maybe there’s a reason for that (for at least two of them))

in general, city schools are far more popular/hard to get into now than they were in the early 90s and at least a decade or two before that. a lot of it is the change in culture/economy, but i also think it had something to do with how schools sold themselves. in the ’80s, they were all defensive ‘the city is safe; no really; Columbia /= Harlem’. then the year i applied (at the beginning of the rise, but before it really took off), the admissions brochure opened up to a beautiful wide overhead shot of midtown skyscrapers at night. plus, felicity and all that.

Felicity took place at NYU, unless you are implying Columbia’s national profile raised due to the law school attendance of one felicity redwell. Which would make sense also.

hahaha I still remember having a boyfriend who was like “Oh you should apply to NYU, it is so great, so awesome, best school” and I was like UH and apparently this was based entirely on his opinion of the tv program Felicity? That was when I was like, no more of you.

only bowl game I think peyton ever actually won

yeah, i thought felicity was NYU (but wasn’t there some show where someone went (off screen?) to columbia?), but the idea of college in NYC in general became far less big and bad. the effect has been even more pronounced at NYU.

actually, i’ll bet that going coed so late in the game (cuz of barnard?) had a fair amount to do with being low profile.

Yeah, weren’t they one of the last hold-outs on that? I think college in NYC in general becoming less big and bad had more to do with Giuliani “cleaning up the streets” ie replacing Times Square with Sofia Coppola’s idea of Tokyo than with TV :\

^^^^ I really didn’t know any of this!

The Lex et Veritas, people!

these schools are all terrible at good sports!!!

While Columbia University’s mascot is a lion, the School of General Studies has its own mascot: the Owl

lolllz O RLY

bragging about beating nu in f’ball is on par with bragging about beating stevie wonder in raquetball.

Not true, particularly during the time frame TOMBOT is referencing.

yes true, they had a good team that year but it was an aberration.

^^^^ telly savalas and pat boone went here! rulez!

also in no way does that look like a lion, learn how to draw “smart people”.

gab, I went to wikipedia to solve your query about someone going to Columbia on a show of the same time frame—Jessie (Elizabeth Berkley) from Saved by the Bell is who you are thinking of!!!

Yeah Tom Northwestern is in the Big Ten, but I meant it’s kind of a sore thumb in there, what with being a medium-big private school among humongous midwestern main-campus status schools like Ohio and Wisconsin and whatnot. Northwestern’s typical role is to lose to those schools at all major sports while trying to come up with glib cheers about how we’d be more valuable in the consulting job market? Except for that vague blip in the 90s you’re talking about, where our football team was good, and Northwestern’s whole profile changed up to the point where forget Felicity, friggin BUFFY got accepted, and would have come, too, if it weren’t for the whole having-to-fight-vampires stuff. In any case, nobody should be bragging too much, football-wise, about beating the team that holds pretty much every statistically conceivable record for losing — through the 70s and 80s the team’s record was invariably like 0–11–1, with like consecutive winless seasons and everything. Like beating the fairly good mid-90s team would be an accomplishment and all, totally, but it’s less of a triumph and more like you were having a beauty contest with Cinderella and the swimsuit part started at 11:59.

Now people who go from the University of Chicago (“Harvard of the Midwest”) to an east-coast Ivy should pretty much have all rights to consider themselves Pretentious Ivy Fuxx0rs, only way more neurotic or whatever.

gah Buffy sucks.

Northwestern is great for both CS and music! I stongly, strongly considered going there.

I crashed a frat party at U. of Chicago a few months ago, it was completely hilarious.

Pardon me, that should say “state schools” — I am in no universe claiming that Ohio is some fancy-pants “status school,” as opposed to down-to-earth Northwestern. (Though Northwestern is fairly down-to-earth and midwestern, especially after that football blip brought incoming classes that were a lot more jocky and boring and American Pie-ish.)

Not to derail onto Northwestern topics, but yeah: music and CS both good there, and theater, and journalism, and basically any kind of science/engineering — most significant campus trivia = the Tech building is the second-largest office-use structure in the U.S., after the Pentagon. (They built some sort of river inside it one year, to study soil erosion or something.)

Northwestern is great for both CS and music!

Ha, a friend/arch-rival from high school went there to double-major in musical theatre and engineering. To nobody’s surprise, that plan didn’t last very long.

Which did he choose?

Engineering, I think. But he had a couple of plum roles in light-opera productions his freshman year.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notable_non-graduate_alumni_of_Harvard

HOLY SHIT scroll down to “Sinedu Tadesse”, what a way to be remembered.

She became so desperately lonely that she sent a letter to dozens of strangers, randomly selected from the phone book, pleading with them to befriend her.

That Wikipedia page may have been edited by this guy, quoted in today’s Times:

“I’m not into thought control,” said Dahir Abdullahi Hirsi, a
pharmacist in Mogadishu. “But I hate Ethiopians even more.”

What the hell does that even mean?

huh, i didn’t realize Penn, unlike Cornell, was in no way public (tho what i thought it was exactly i have no idea)

i don’t think i ever watched saved by the bell? wasn’t someone from 90210 or party of five or something headed there? i may be imagining this show.

the football team sucking was part of why i went to Columbia. Chicago was probably my third choice after there and Yale, tho I’m not certain I would have gone there in the end.

the team that holds pretty much every statistically conceivable record for losing

TS: Northwestern Wildcats 1979–1982 vs. Columbia Lions 1983–1988

I thought Penn was public too.

xpost

My guess? “Tubgirl >>> thought control >>> when yr Chex gets REALLY soggy >>> Goatse >>> Ethiopians”

Gabbneb, you may be thinking of the Jennifer Love Hewitt fake-Felicity thing? I wouldn’t be surprised if they sent her to Columbia, since, like, Felicity had the other school staked out. (Though geezum Felicity is way more of a Columbia girl and Hewitt-character was way more NYU, with with her thumb-poky-sweater fashion-trending and all.)

Best way to think of Penn as a private school = do crossword puzzles.

what is it with you and tubgirl?

TS: Northwestern Wildcats 1979–1982 vs. Columbia Lions 1983–1988

vs. Prairie View A&M 1989–1998

Gabbneb, you may be thinking of the Jennifer Love Hewitt fake-Felicity thing?

maybe? perhaps this is why it has been blocked from my memory?

Why ALL of these things haven’t been blocked from all of our memories I will never figure out. These things are taking up space important information could be filling, like “Penn is not a public school.”

FYI, whenever I tell the charming story about the friend of mine who tried to pick up a girl at a party who was all, “Hmmm, tempting, but I’ve got something really important to do tomorrow”? That girl was Sinedu.

Also, a girl I sang with in the church choir lived across the hallway from them and showed up a sobbing mess that morning, having been awakened by the screaming next door. She immediately called the police but sadly they arrived too late and she didn’t think she could get through the door into their suite.

does anyone who went to an Ivy League school actually ever think ‘I went to an Ivy League school’? (don’t answer that)

yes, we do...only to wonder why it was they yellowbrick road somepeople paint them as.

in anycase..the value of any school is dependent upon what dept yr looking at and who (both faculty and students) are there with you...the rest is scarcely worth considering
