after being dragged by the wife to see “the holiday” yesterday, i’ve come to the conclusion that I hate Jack Black. Used to love JB...but I think he finally pushed me over the edge. In this festering turd of a film JB takes a serious role...for about 45 minutes until he must resort to his one trick pony show and do a stupid song about tweedle dees and deedle dees or something. I’ve had it. Discuss JB here.
yeah, one trick pony. occasionally the trick is funny, more often than not its overdone. Having seen School of Rock endlessly repeated on TBS recently I’ve come to realize how truly unlikable/assholish his “rock n roll” character really is.
his fucking facial expressions make me cringe. i think i may have to watch his breakout performance in the 1993 classic “Airborne”, to like him again.
he was okay in King Kong. dislike and am really bored of his schtick otherwise.
jack black is just awful
it’s like you really don’t have to do that thx those rock cliches entered the realm of self-parody a really long time ago
key to enjoying one-trick ponies: LIMIT YR EXPOSURE
Are you mad? He kills in “School of Rock.” I have not seen any of the other movies referenced here.
So the Tenacious D movie went redwood at the cinemas?
See? Limited exposure totally works! (XP)
Like it wasn’t entirely predictable in High Fidelity that 15 funny minutes of Jack Black would make Hollywood say “Hey, three starring roles a year for this guy would be perfect!”
i really enjoy JB most of the time, but the “sing a crazy song all rocker style” is so fucking played out. nacho libre was halfway entertaining until the hair metal ballad entered the picture. i know that i will be dragged to this new one with cameron diaz and will be cringing knowing that the goofy-rocket-ballad is waiting around the corner any minute.
i wonder how long he went at it with peter jackson before PJ just let him “win” and filmed him singing some over-the-top ode to king kong with the full intent of destroying the film before it ever hit the editing room.
I can’t say I’ve ever liked a single movie where he’s had a major role (nb I’ve not seen Nacho Libre, School of Rock or Tenacious D.—nor do I plan to), but I still have a strange affinity for him. I think maybe he reminds me of a friend from high school
but the aforementioned list is pretty much his entire “major role” career? So maybe I need to see more Jack Black.
nah.
Shallow Hal
Orange County
(I’m not recommending you watch either of those, btw)
I saw School of Rock the other night for the first time and I was surprised by how much I liked it. Okay, his shtick is his shtick, but his character wasn’t actually free of positive traits. He was nice to all the kids, and encouraged them. Plus, he was totally committed to rock. Which is commendable.
I have not seen him in many things, though, so perhaps it is best to keep the JB to a minimum.
I still like Jack Black a lot (especially in Kong & School el Rock), am heartily looking forward to the pairing of Jack Black & Mos Def in Michel Gondry’s movies Be Kind Rewind and Masters of Space and Time or whatever they’re called next year.
Best Jack Black role so far was in Mars Attacks! btw.
nah—Heat Vision and Jack is his finest moment
and if you get dragged to see this movie be prepared to want to do physical harm to cameron diaz too. am i the only person who finds her incredibly unattractive?
nah, I don’t rate her either.
I’m glad I’m not in a relationship where I get “dragged” to see movies. Sounds horrible.
well i owed it to her after repeated viewings of point break and platoon.
I got my wife the pure adrenaline special edition of Point Break for xmas
tom you rule! extra meatball sandwiches for all!
and I bought this for the mom-in-law

Chris, you are OTM re: Cameron Diaz. I really find myself unable to tolerate Jack Black in most circumstances though I did enjoy Nacho Libre okay enough.
i love how the reindeer shit candy is listed in gourmet foods.
i’ll cop to liking School of Rock. King Kong was crazy boring, but it wasn’t really his fault. I’ll see the Tenacious D movie if it’s cheap enough and if the weedman comes soon.
School of Rock was okay enough too.
Re: Tenacious D — I’ve seen some of the shows, and they did absolutely nothing for me. What exactly am I missing that so many people find amusing?
I watched “Shallow Hal” in a motel room once. It was painful.
Over the weekend I saw Cameron Diaz in “Gangs of New York”, which I’d never seen, and was pleasantly surprised. That being said, I still don’t like her all that much.
Here is a list of films I enjoyed Cameron Diaz in, because why not?: Being John Malkovich, A Life Less Ordinary.
Shallow Hal is one of the worst films I have ever seen in my entire life.
cosign
I like Cameron Diaz well enough, but she’s not the great comedy actress everyone seems to think she is. Having a wonky face doesn’t necessarily make you hilarious.

hahahahaHYPNOTICAL
I love School of Rock, and he’s great in High Fidelity and loads of other things where he has little parts—(Enemy of the State, Anchorman, erm ...Will and Grace....). But I saw him gurning on the red carpet for something and thought, blimey, that would be a strain to live with. No wonder his wife plays the cello, it’s supposed to be calming isn’t it?
Black and Diaz are both serviceable in small doses (altho Diaz being passable in Being John Malkovich and There’s Something About Mary /= me finding her Hotttt)
I liked the stuff he did with Mr. Show and his part in High Fidelity. That’s where it ends tho.
xpost—i think Diaz is ok looking. i like her eyes! and lets not forget her pivotal role in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas!
wow I totally forgot she was in that
ned otm. I think Anchorman is his best work, or at least the best scene
ever
. Gonna dissent and say even Shallow Hal was...diverting. Botched the last line of King Kong though wtf.
the dog-booting in Anchorman is pretty awesome... (“well, now this is happening”)
That was good too.
I actually thought he was slightly out of place in Anchorman. I would have liked someone else to kick the dog. Although actually I would have liked nobody to kick the dog.
In one of the deleted extended scenes, when Ron Burgundy is crying in the phone booth (classic) after the dog booting, Brian Fantana asks him “were you raped?”. I’m not sure why it was so funny but hoo boy, was it!
The thing about hating Jack Black is that it’s almost as obvious as hating Tom Cruise; blah blah blah easy target no one cares etc. (btw I LOATHE TOM CRUISE and will go on about how much I hate him when given half a chance so I totally grok the impulse behind this thread, this isn’t so much a “criticism” as much as it is a “Dan feels like posting something but doesn’t feel like making a real point” thing)
The fact that he had a burrito thrown at him, which made him go into a dog-punting tirade is, for me, quite amusing.
The dog-punting thing was fucking hysterical.
“Ron! Where are you?”
“I am in a glass case of emotion!”
LOVE IT.
I was all for the dog punting. Especially since I’ve been on that bridge more times than I can count. (I was not punting dogs at the time.)
Well, I can see how crossing a particular bridge a bunch of times would make you want to watch someone punt dogs off of it. (???)
i liked the tenacious D show (the ones airing after mr show). it was just really random loopy and absurd and wtf, perfect for late night viewing. once the album came out, the joke had gotten stale, due not in small part to the fact they kept recycling the same bits from the show. and they were still doing this with the movie!
Tenacious D was at their funniest before even that show, when they were a band and not a Television Phenomenon.
I was all for the dog punting.
You’re mean.
i caught school of rock on tv the other night (flipping back & forth between it & casino = heaven), and you know what, it is a really fantastic comedy.
THUMBS IS UP FOR SCHOOLS OF ROCK.
Jack Black was just fine on the Mr Show musical sketches, too
don’t stick your dick in these holes
check this shit ooooouuuuuuuuuuuut
Cameron Diaz is a full-on Monet. Jack Black is handsome, though, and therefore I like him.
the spumco-directed video to “fuck her gently” was the height of tenacious d’s career.
No.
love him in school of rock
hate him in high fidelity
am indifferent to in tenacious d
haven’t seen king kong
Jack Black on LSD
Holy Jesus fuck that ending!
:)

hahaha, I had just finished calling one of my cats a butthole baby when I clicked on that link.
omg
He was so good as the drug-addled orderly in Jesus’ Son, I expected more from him. I was hoping he’d leave the frat rocker schtick behind him and go for more of a Michael J. Pollard thing. Oh well, as others have pointed out above, he’s fine in small doses. I really liked Nacho Libre, though I think his co-star Hector Jimenez stole the show.
that lil short ‘LSD’ sketch/clip thing was funnier than most of the Tenacious D movie!
I have always hated Jack Black, from the moment I first became aware of him — around when High Fidelity came out. I forget if it was Tenacious D or that movie that came first, but I hated him in both. I found him surprisingly tolerable in School of Rock though.
I love JB! My husband swears I’m the only person who loves Nacho Libre without reservation. I dunno. The schtick makes me happy. Esp High Fidelity AND School Of Rock.
I really liked his meek foil in High Fidelity though! What happened to that guy?
I forgot about him in Jesus’ Son.
He got to be the fat/goofy/comic relief guy while still playing a character that wasn’t JB in a non-comedy film.
I remember wihing he could have gone on to do more roles like that because he was good at it.
i’m not really happy about the fact that i was eating food during the end of that clip there
xxpost Hurting: yep, Meek Foil was good too. Almost as good as he was as Chad The Nanny in Jerry Maguire. Acc aording to IMDB he hasn’t done a whole lot...random roles in Felicty etc...apparently he was in “Snakes on a Plane.”
Okay in small doses.
Tenacious D seem fucking stupid.
Not as stupid or funny as this (typo mine):
A search for “jack balck” found the following results:

i liked him in high fidelity and in school of rock...but now i watch those and am quite annoyed.
Wow Arthur, hey dude! It’s good to “see” you.
one not song & inward singing
the guy’s hilarious.
Best Jack Black scene = ‘The Jackal’, where Bruce Willis buys a super high-tech gun from him and then tracks him with it and shoots his arm off.
I liked him in Enemy Of The State.
OH SNAP I forgot he was in “The Jackal”!!!!!!!! +5 awesomeness
“School of Rock” was pretty awesome.
he’s best in ‘bob roberts’ as one of bob’s freaky CIA-wannabe fans.
I really liked his meek foil in High Fidelity though!
Todd Louiso; he directed Love Liza with Phil. S. Hoffman, and acted in Snakes on a Plane and Thank You for Smoking.
btw, the bewildering-for-existing Broadway musical of High Fidelity opened last week, and the Times’ Ben Brantley reported it blandified and “one of the Top 5 Forgettable Musicals.”
the Times’ Ben Brantley reported it blandified and “one of the Top 5 Forgettable Musicals.”
Hahaha I got that just from the 30 second clip in the radio ad!
From the New Suckitude thread, re: High Fidelity, the Musical
http://theater2.nytimes.com/2006/12/08/theater/reviews/08fide.html?ref=arts
a friend of mine got free tickets through his work for High Fidelity. He went and said it was fucking horrendous.

that fat wanker looks like he’s taking the high hard one.
or it just the dude from Barenaked Ladies.
taking the high hard one...
shallow hal has to be one of the worst movies ever made
xpost
The HF cast are not dancing to the Beta Band.
The show’s lyricist (Adolph Green’s daughter) said she didn’t like the Cusack film, finding it “lugubrious.” Uh, yeah.
Indie Record Store Clerk: The Musical!
All John Cusak movies should live out thier years as Broadway musicals.
Better Off Dancing!
Sing Anything!
The Better Off Dead musical would be called I Want My Two Dollars.
One Crazy Summerstock!
The Thin Red Kickline
Singing John Malkovich!
Runaway, Jury!
Midnight in the Garden of Rodgers & Hammerstein
omg
CON AIR: THE MUSICAL!
Oh hell yes.
Cusack is playing an Iraq war widower in an imminent Sundance film; probably not a future musical.
The Cradle Will Rock Out
Put the bunny down put the bunny down
I SAID
Put the bunny down put the bunny down
*extended dance break/fight scene*
Why didn’t you juuuust put the buuuuuuny DOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOWN?
(Also megalolz at TCWRO)
JB is pretty much the best in short doses (even in a shitbomb like Bongwater, along with the good movies like Jesus’ Son & Enemy of the State, etc.), but I’ve yet to like any movie where he was the star.
Last enjoyable Cameron Diaz movie was the one with Morgan Freeman and Ewan MacGregor, even that stretches ‘enjoyable’ a bit.

that is the most repulsive thing ever posted to ILX
um, tubgirl?
It’s in the top 3, tho.
that needs to go into noize board quarterly .gif review
I find that grosser than tubgirl.
at least tubgirl is charming
It’s even worse if your scroll your browser down so that all you can see is the lower half gyrating away.
Man, I imagine having sex with that guy is both scary and annoying. Based on .gif.
Hi, Tracer! I’m still around, in small doses, like Jack Black. You know, he’s really not bad looking in person. I passed him by on the street once when I was on vacation in Oaxaca. He was walking down the street carrying a garment bag. I thought it couldn’t be him—he was too handsome. Then I did some research and found out they were in town filming Nacho Libre.
But that little clip is repulsive.
Man, I imagine having sex with that guy is both scary and annoying. Based on .gif.
poor haden sister
It’s that last bit—what’s he doing with his hand there. Is he holding an ice cream?
I was wonding about him the other night when I caught a clip of School of Rock of TBS. I had never seen the movies or any of him playing a lead role. It just seemed odd that he has lead roles. Are there people who are Fans of Jack Black, do they wait for his next movie to come out?
uh, Jack Black tries to be repulsive, he’s in show bidness.
Genius of the Marketplace: High Fidelity musical closes Sunday.
hahahahaha HOORAY CAPITALISM
the producers will begin casting for Mambo! (In the Garden of Good and Evil).
Saving Silverman’s where it’s at.
because that .gif was up for far too short a period of time:

how long before he succumbs to fat-comedian-dies-from-hard-living syndrome
(aka John Belushi vs. John Candy vs. Chris Farley vs. Jack Black)
NOT SOON ENOUGH.
Candy > Belushi >> Black >>> Farley
OTM.
i bet jack black just drinks the occasional wine
he just had a kid and supposedly its mellowing him out.
Black is basically Belushi had he memorized Seven Habits of Highly Effective People instead of doing cocaine Brandoisms.
Holy shit. Jack Black opens new paradigm & sharpens the saw? Can’t really see that happening. Though since he is failing at being a joker, I suspect he gave up on the midnight toker front, too.
Belushi > Candy >>>>>>>> Black > Farley
so its agreed that everyone thinks Chris Farley sucked.
Was there ever a question?

BOO! You all hate fun. Chris Farley didn’t suck.
candy = belushi = black = farley
dude’s got a lot of energy.
Wow Arthur, hey dude! It’s good to “see” you.
Yes, seconded!
The fact that most of ilx agrees that Chris Farley sucked means it can’t be all bad. I used to feel like I must have either been missing something or that the whole world was stupid.
I did like The Chris Farley Show though.
I so hate that laugh that Chris Farley would do. That same laugh that Peter Griffin does now on “Family Guy”.
I think Chris Farley was fenny funny and very talented. I just think Black, Belushi and Candy are/were funnier/more talented.
all those fat guy are funny
i would have laugh at all these fat guy
And now none of us will ever get the chance to see the joy that was High Fidelity the musical...
Until it’s revived in 20 years time as a cult classic.
Pretty decent if overoptimistic beat-down of Black on Slate.com right now: http://www.slate.com/id/2155440/
Abysmal movies, but Chris Farley is classic, if only for asking whichever celebrity happened to be on The Chris Farley Show, “Hey, did you see Die Hard?”. This is still a great thing to ask people.
if Chris Farley ever did anything as culturally literate as Belushi’s “Dueling Brandos” duet w/ Peter Boyle, pls lemme know
Chris Farley sucked, dudes. Also I liked that Shakey thought he needed to explain “dead fat comedians”
well I left out Fatty Arbuckle
That Slate article might have been a little more convincing if he hadn’t linked to an utterly lame SNL skit as an example of the heights of Black’s talent.
I will always cut Chris Farley some slack for that Chippendale’s dancer sketch.
see if you can find farleys death pics on the goog.
I will always cut Chris Farley some slack for that Chippendale’s dancer sketch.

otm
now that i think of it, i’m kind of pissed and feel a little bit cheated that horatio sanz didn’t follow through on the implied promise that every big fat snl comedian would die in a blow-related overdose.
Too boring to die.
I sure have hella sympathy & love for the Arbuckle. Fatty not John, natch.
THANK GOD FOR TEH INTERNETS:

Click on “Videos.” Be prepared for a musical dreamworld. Now High Fidelity : The Musical CAN LIVE ON FOREVER.
“Coming Soon:
High Fidelity Original Cast Recording and more.”
Such optimism...
I saw Jack Black on Broadwick Street in Soho today, peering at a map and pushing a pushchair.
HAHAHA, I was just jokingly saying to someone that HF the musical probably had a song called “You’re In My Top 5 Reasons to Live” and the truth was not far from that.
Also, anyone notice the “...chance of your LOO-OOO-OOOVE!” sounds suspiciously like “seasons of LOO-OO0-OOOVE!” from Rent?
oh lord. please wash that video from my brain.
I just watched it again. I feel like I should apologize.
Oh good god, I didn’t even notice the video the first time, I was just talking about the audio clip. EUUUGHHHAHAHHHHHFHGHHHH!
When he paused after he said “Laura” and got all mad I was really hoping he would say “YOU’RE SUCH A STUPID FUCKING SLEAZEWHORE BITCH!”
I sure have hella sympathy & love for the Arbuckle. Fatty not John, natch.
It’s JON!
It’s the little things that make a crucial difference.
Now if we can keep people from typing JOHN STEWART, then it’d be total success.
Does anyone remember LYMAN, original owner of Odie, back when Garfield was more into eating ferns?
Now that this thread’s on the subject, what’s up with all these batshit insane fake Garfield strips turning up here? and can we post them all in one place.
lets make this a thread about LYMAN instead of jack black
My sister made me go and see the Holiday on saturday, Jack Black as a second string romantic lead is one of the more believable things in the film. It is a very very bad film.
However at least they played the trailer for miss Potter before hand so at least I could feel a deep sense of relief that I wasn’t seeing that.

Chris Farley was pathetic.
His humour was intended to insult the viewers instead of amusing them.
Though a lot of people enjoy being insulted, that’s what the modern TV is about.

His humour was intended to insult the viewers instead of amusing them.
What does this even mean, honestly?
Farley had some incredible SNL moments—The Herlihy Boy, the Chris Farley Show, the Weekend Update ‘air quotes’ character (“maybe I’m not ‘hygenic’... Maybe I don’t use ‘soap’, etc.). A lot of his material was written by Bob Odenkirk, who is still a comedy god, awkward-transition-into-feature-films period notwithstanding.
Those are commercial jokes intended ONLY to keep the viewers watching.
I shared my oppinion, now it’s up to you either share it or not
PS I like SNL but not Chris Farley.
can somebody ban this guy plz
