i really can’t deal with lemons anymore lately, and they were so important to tea for a while and salad dressings. i went through my lemon phase; i took it too far maybe, and now lemons are over, at least for a while.
and yet tea with milk (or rice/soy milk) will never go out of style for me—it’s like what i come back to. same goes for cooking—i was all into zataar spice mix but what i come back to is straight-up indian curry and the usual japanese/thai-inspired things i make.
are there foods you suddenly find yourself having no taste for whereas once you were totally into them? did we never actually like them in the first place but were just overwhelmed by their novelty? and what new foods became a part of your quotidian food life?
and, bonus question of dubious intellectual/comedy origin, what does this mean, psychologically? are lemons actually the metaphorical lemon? is this all not about food at all? or is it entirely about food? is food actually everything, is everything actually a metaphor for food?
i will also lately only eat pasta if someone else cooks it—in which case, i enjoy it
totally cannot deal with molasses anymore either.
am thinking about a sweet-potato phase
I went through a temporary pumpkin phase during late October, after discovering the joys of pasta served with chunks of rosemary-roasted pumpkin. It’s a logical progression for me to have a sweet potato phase next, and indeed I cooked a delicious vegetable biriyani the other right which had cubes of sweet potato in it.
Extra sharp cheddar cheese is forever, but I’m thinking about a coconut milk phase. I made soup with it last weekend and it does magical, wonderful things to broth.
yes! coconut milk is a thing i will always eat
ooh cj do you have a recipe or vague instructions? i’ve never made vegetable biryani before but it sounds great with sweet potato!
i definitely had a pumpkin and squash phase this year, when my hippie friends who volunteer at organic farms were going on about how important it is to eat local seasonal vegetables. i was like “man, i could get used to this!” fall is a great vegetable season. i’m kind of over it now though.
ramen is forever. it’s honestly one of my favorite foods, i eat it as comfort food.
I tried some spaghetti squash yesterday but it’s still gross. :(
baked with tomato sauce and extra sharp cheddar cheese you might like it though! that’s the only way i’ve had spaghetti squash, actually. i’ve eaten a much greater variety of butternut, acorn, and pumpkin squash recipes.
am thinking about a sweet-potato phase

God, no, don’t do it. I did and now they nauseate me. Moderation is key with the sweet potato.
i don’t like sweet potatoes AS potatoes but i love sweet potato fries, sweet potato pie, and other sweet potato applications.
oh, in the end whatever the food phase is ends up being nauseating anyway. i mean, i’m sure i went through a sweet potato phase ages ago and that’s why i’ve been off them for a long time. i think the mainstay of that one was sweet potato fries!
xpost!
i was going to make a sweet potato lentil thing, to start out, see where it goes.
i also want to make this
(includes pumpkin, but could include sweet potato instead, i bet)
I’ve gone through way too many food phases, which tend to burn at both ends for a week or two, at which point I stock up on the beloved new food. Shortly after I tend to get sick of it and look in my cupboard or fridge. “WHY did I buy so many of those?”
I have been in a delightful Grape Nuts Flakes phase since May & it’s still doing me right.
I tend to come round to the ODed food about a year later and enjoy it in moderation.
I can never eat canned tuna again, though, because I went through this horrible 5-month depression where I was too apathetic to cook and too indecisive to pick out a food. The solution was to eat tuna out of a can with chopsticks once or twice a day. no washing up. Consequently I not only think tuna is terrible (I never liked it that much anyway), I associate it with crippling depression. Yay!
whoa. yeah, tuna... i hadn’t eaten it in a long time but i bought a can a few months ago and last week i decided enough was enough (and i didn’t really have other food in house). i had some spicy deli olives, so i cut up some up and put them and some of their spicy oil into a bowl with the tuna and ate it. it was good.
i wonder if i’ll ever get back to eating mayonaisse? maybe high-class olive oil kind?
oh, i think quinoa is my equivalent to your grape nuts flakes!
my new thing is couscous. i just found out that it’s easier and faster to cook than rice even, and i like it better. AWESOME!
I just started eating seafood for the first time in 8 years, and I’m excited about tuna!

Here’s the recipe I use for the vegetable biryani ...

(It’s really tasty)
Oh man that looks tasty. I must try it.
I go through food phases all the time, mostly with spices and condiments lately. The latest one was the lime pickle phase, which faded out at the end of summer. I’m currently in a Little Debbie Swiss Cake Roll phase, but that is due to needing the worst possible comfort food because of hotel living.
i’m thinking of finishing off my all-nighter (during which similarly awake friends have made me 2 cups of coffee, a cup of tea, and a chicken quesadilla) with a bowl of ramen. disgusting?
and wow cj that looks great!
bowl of ramen. disgusting?
No! Perfect!
BRANSTON PICKLE. I mean, it’s lovely stuff but I really hate it if I make a sandwich and then it makes the sandwich go soggy and smell like bin bags.
I am making that vegetable biryani this very night! I had a real craving for Indian food after watching Gilmore Girls the other night, and this will solve my problem.
i am also inspired by the veg biryani—plus, it looks easy!
What else can I make this wkend with coconut milk in it??? C’mon, help me out. Hint: Must not contain squash/eggplant/tofu.
you can make a million things!
tom yum gai soup?
lentil/mungbean curry thing i have a recipe for
any curry for that matter
bbc food site is pretty awesome
CJ, that looks do-able! Arbin, I printed out a soup recipe that someone posted the other week, and it looks awesome but has, like, 30 ingredients and this is not the week for expensive groceries, I’m afraid.
Maybe I’ll make another pot of that chix soup but spicier or w/ lemongrass or something. OH, the soy chix sounds awesome!
yeah, make the soysauce-coconut chicken! looks easy and you prob have most of the ingredients. and then you will have lots of fooed.
Plus, coconut rice is like manna from heaven. Also, an Aussie friend of mine swears by peanut butter + coconut milk + Siracha hot sauce as the best-ever topping for noodles. I think she might be onto something.
coconut rice is the food of the gods
tahini is also a good substitute for the peanut butter there—tahini, soy sauce, siracha or sambal oelek, maybe some rice vinegar or mirin and a bit of sugar—aw yeah
oh man, also, you can make rice pudding with coconut milk, never forget
Rice pudding with coconut milk... that might actually sound like the one thing that would not upset my salmonella-addled stomach! I might make that tonight.
cardamom is important to it! and even ginger (which helps stomachs!)
Argh, I’m trying to find a recipe that doesn’t have all kinds of cream and stuff that I can’t handle at the moment.
I’d assume you just boil the rice with a cardomum pod until it goes gelatinous, then add coconut milk and a dash of ginger. Or do I have to boil the rice in coconut milk?
I am teh stupid when it comes to cooking.
you could cook the rice first, then let cool down a bit and boil for a while with coconut milk and spices until it thickens.
feel better. i hope you called the restaurant to let them know how ill you became—this sounds pretty serious.
here’s a vegan recipe that might work for you:
http://www.bbc.co.uk/food/recipes/database/coconutricepuddingwi_11359.shtml
This one sounds quite nice
I didn’t even think to do that—what would be the good of calling the restaurant?
Thanks for the recipe, though, I’ll give that a try tonight.
i think that restaurants should be notified if people get severely ill. it could be a contamination issue, for instance, or a batch of bad ingredients or something similar that could make a lot of people sick.
My sisX0r ate almost exactly the same food as me and didn’t get sick, I think it was just bad luck.
