Yes.
Hastings is next to Garden Grove, right?
In the psychogeographic sense, yes.
Also close to Cottage Grove, in the looking at a map sense.
I’m going to Hastings tonight...
OK, who pissed in the sandbox?
(apropos of nothing)
Har Har
PERVO
I lost so much stuff in the neighbor’s sandbox. When they went on vacation I dug the whole thing up and recovered about dozen Matchbox cars, a sandal, and Hammerhead.
I hope this isn’t going to be like that.
It’s funny how FB’s name is different in this parallel world. My name is the same, but I’m taller.

So be still, be still
For you know that I always will
Tonight and forever
Be watching over you.
For tonight and forever, be watching over you.
So sleep, little darling, sleep on through.
I will be watching over you.
I always feel better sleeping under the Hastings thread mascot. Call me superstitious...
Why do I always want to take a nap at this time of day? Why?
Is this thing on? Check. Check.
Check.
Czech?

? How do I shot image on nuILX?

That’s better.
Is that a dog or a small deer? I’m so confused.
Well, I’ve never heard of a deerhouse, so I’m assuming it’s a dog.
This new Hastings thread doesn’t have the ZING of the old ones.
WE CAN REBUILD IT. WE CAN MAKE IT STRONGER, MORE OBSCURE AND OBLIQUE, MORE NEEDLESSLY WORDY.
I want to believe.
Okay, a random recollection that I’m sure none of you have heard. I think we all remember a large family whose oldest daughter was a close friend of mine. When we were in high school, her mother was pregnant... again. I had to talk D34n out of leaving a box of condoms on their doorstep on Christmas morning with a note saying they were “from God.”
In retrospect, I kind of think we should have sent the package...
The c/d VHS tape thread reminded me of the thrill of finally getting a VHS recorder after having spent 1978 to 1990 with two Betamax VCRs. (Sure, buying Betamax looked like a good idea in the 70s, but when Dad replaced it in the mid-80s, it was already clear that Betamax was dead).
Also, that original 70s era Betamax is STILL in one of my parents’ storage area. (The deer head that called “Wally” that freaked my sister out all the time is stored separately).
Tonight, we shall celebrate the majesty of HSTYNGS with a clambake. Afterwards, we will drink until we are imobilized. In these ways, we acknowledge our history and heritage.
But no mention of cornfields.
That can’t be right...
Motherfucking sonofabitching clambake, yo.
Afterwards, the world is our oyster. Or clam. whatever.
Must... refrain... from.. seafood...jokes...
Also Old-ILX is currently up. Not sure if using the “search” function is still a potential disaster.
Never hold yourself back on my account...
WHERE IS EVERYONE ELSE, BTW, WTF?
Not that I’m complaining, but this could be retitled the “Sara and John chatroom” thread.
xpost: WAHT?
I know. Our chats are just not the same without the possibility that one of us might spontaneously strangle the other one.
Everyone else: clearly off dressing for dinner. I might be, too, if I wasn’t putting off my 5 miles on the treadmill...
(Also, I have revived the Old-ILX Hastings thread, without using ILX search. Go me!)
Reviving this thread so it’s easy to find.
(You may thank me later with jewels, furs, etc.)

If this boiler is “Made in France,” I fear that it hates America.
Hey. Shit is broke again, eh?
Sadly, yes. Andrew can’t get to the server right now for some reason, so they aren’t sure when it will be up.
(And just when I had a new “Jane” story to relate, too!)
But I’m glad to see I’m not the only one who has come out of the requisite turkey-induced coma.
Let me guess. I’m the only poor sucker dumb enough to be at work today, no?
I am “at work,” but I’m reading the new Subgenius book instead of “working,” and in a little while I am going to give blood.
(xpost) Ah, well, retail; that is the nature of the beast. It’s not that you’re dumb, it’s just how that works. (I did it myself for years, plus my Dad and brother are still into it with the liquor stores. This is a crazy season for that business).
I’m cheating here by not actually having a job, aren’t I. I’m going to make a Tollhouse Pie for tomorrow’s Thanksgiving with friends. And we’re all going to see the NAG production of Beauty and the Beast tonight, because our friend is in it.
Less fun: I am trying to gather up all the non-working electronics in the house and put them in a box in the garage. Blah.
How is the new SubG book? Also, is this an advance copy or something, or have I simply not been paying attention again?
Yeah, that’s the one. It’s pretty gott-verdammt funny, more roffles per square inch than previous books.
I finally realized that Rev. Susie the Floozy is Susan Barrows, who used to be an OHMYGOD hottie back in the late 70s/early 80s and roughly forced hundreds of young boychildren to confront their own onrushing puberty at several Atlanta Fantasy Fairs, simply by wearing a Phoenix costume and telling dirty jokes.
hola. . .
A&M just sunk us (Texas) :(
I’m hard at work on xmas craft. no pajama pants still but finished a purse for my sis-in-law during the game. hurrah.
tonight, mavs and spurs, yay!
Yay Sam—your motivation!
My pie is cooling; I’m done with walking on the treadmill. I’m not done watching Hitch. I realize I don’t go to the movies often these days, but since when is a romantic comedy almost 3 hours long?!
Whew, I misread that; it is only almost 2 hours long. That makes more sense.
That means it is almost 2 hours TOO long.
Nah, it’s kind of cute. Plus, my other choices were not inspiring and walking on the treadmill requires distraction. Untold Scandal was good, but not to the level of Dangerous Liaisons, plus it was kind of depressing.
I’d ask what you’d recommend, but I’m kind of afraid to hear the answer.
Movies that don’t involve Will Smith. Movies that don’t involve the “isn’t it funny when white people dance?” joke. Movies that don’t involve the words “romantic” and “comedy” next to each other.
I try to avoid Tom Cruise myself. (That being said, Independence Day was truly horrific, I saw it with a bunch of guys that LOVED it the day it opened, and wasn’t Will Smith involved in that?)
Romantic comedies are not the worst thing that can happen to you. You just have to be prepared for fluff. I realize this is an argument with you that I will not win.
(This is why, when I look at my Neflix friends page and see “John, 91% similarity to you,” I get suspicious of somebody’s math).
That is odd. Maybe Netflix doesn’t count things that no one other than myself has ever watched against me.
Just in case, I have sworn off ever putting any braids in my hair.
Also, yeah, it is only comparing what people have rated. And compared to almost anyone, I have seen few movies; your rated movies list does have some odd ones on it. FB still wins for Most Out of Control Queue, though.
I also note here, for posterity, that no one I know has rated Boxing Helena.
what the fuck is hastings
Hastings is a city in Minnesota, located near the Twin Cities. I grew up there and went to high school there, which is where I met John Justen, Dan Perry, and the mysterious Fluffy Bear.
For my own part, I believe Hastings to be a state of mind, occasionally manifesting on this plane of existence as glimpses out of the corner of my eye, never quite possible to see full on. Here’s one of them:
Yes, it’s that, too. Absolutely!
In my universe, Hastings is all places, the proto-place, the archetype. Unlike Maple Grove, which was/is, simply, suburban heck.
(I had to post something, to see what time it really was.)
do any of you Hastings people actually live in Hastings now?
hi jaq!:) i emailed you
what does ned raggett have to do with it
srsly
jergins! I emailed you back!
Ned’s full name contains all the letters that make up Hastings.
(disclaimer: that is probably a lie about Ned)
Also a former HSTNGS resident—Gbx.

ned is all things to all people, roxy.
So far as I know, no one who posts on ILX actually lives in Hastings.
Didn’t M@tt H3lg3s0n also live in Hastings, or did I hallucinate that?
No, M@tt is just a twin cities man about town.
Since the whole NANANANANA thread is non-existent at the moment, I just wanted you all to know that I just crossed 40000 and had to stop because I wasn’t making any fucking sense whatsoever.
Thanks, John, I can’t keep people straight in my mind.
40K. Holy cats, that is amazing!!!!
So, when did you start making sense?
Here you go. Unravelling the mystery:

Also:

John’s always so helpful. I still like the comparison to Derry, Maine in the Stephen King novel It. Sure, Hastings can be dull, but on the other hand...
to me,hastings is a nice thread of interesting people. good for time wasting.
today i feel sad b/c qtip isn’t well and i have to go back to work on monday. :( why must vacation be so short?
any news on real ilx?
I’ll bet a dollar that we won’t see it again until it’s Canuckistanian ILX.
When was that transition supposed to happen? I wasn’t paying attention.
Sam, I am so sorry about Qtip :(
isn’t the transition supposed to happen at the end of this month?
This coming Wednesday.
John, you want my amassing Severd Heads collection.
also, I’m obtaining some music by a band of that name.
Random HSTGS-related event: author Maryjanice Davidson will be on Showcase, MN tomorrow morning at around 10:10 am on KARE11 (NBC).
There’s also a book release party for Sleeping with the Fishes at the Mall of America Barnes and Noble at 7 pm Tuesday night; I’m going, despite realizing once again this morning that MOA is the most exhausting place on earth.
HATING WILL SMITH IS LIKE HATING LIFE WHERE “LIFE” = “TALENTED BLACK PEOPLE WHO TURNED DOWN MIT FOR FAME AND FORTUNE” AND/OR “PUPPIES”
will smith could’ve went to mit?
i’m exhausted this morning. being back at work sux0r!
Yeah, he got a big-ass scholarship from them and basically had to decide whether he was going to be an engineer or an emcee. He decided to defer a year and see if he could do the emcee thing and, well, apparently he could.
John, have you seen “Six Degrees of Seperation” or “Ali”?
I loved Will back when he was all jazzy jeff and the fresh prince but he’s become kind of lame.
That happens to pretty much everyone once they grow up!
:(
aren’t he and jada scientologists?
I finished watching Hitch last night and I liked it. Not hugely memorable, but cute. I neither love nor hate Will Smith. And the white guy who “couldn’t dance” danced a hell of a lot better than the white guys I know who can’t dance.
Scientologists are creepy, but that doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy what talents they have. (That being said, I do like to give my right wing guy friend a hard time for his crush on Greta van Susternen or whatever her name is.)
Once I know someone’s a scientologist, I truly can never look at them the same again.
Sam, did you see those photos of Katie Holmes on her wedding day, taken through a window? I thought she looked really wistful and sad, which I attributed to the fact that she was marrying not only a Scientologist, but the craziest one.
maybe it was inbetween drug dosings for her and she was coming to. .
Now that you mention it, that makes perfect sense.
“Now Katie, hand me the baby, here’s your pill... now let’s just put this wedding dress on...”

WORKS ON SO MANY LEVELS.
PERFECT.
I don’t care if Will Smith is a Scientologist or not; I appreciate that he is a successsful black man in the entertainment industry who came out of hip-hop, did his own thing, and managed to become wildly successful without pretending to be a gang member and while retaining some sense of dignity (aside from “The Legend of Bagger Vance”, fuck him for that nonsense) and not acting like a damned fool (YES I AM LOOKING AT YOU, FLAVOR FLAV).
aw dan, hating on flava.
(I understand what you’re saying though.)
Also, I like the Kate Bush lyrics, too!
That particular one about my parents is awful, though, mostly because I know it would cause an enormous unecessary FITE if they ever read it. I don’t think “HI DERE I WAS 18 AND SELF-ABSORBED” is a good enough excuse for “my parents wish I’d died instead of my brother”.
factoid to those who once inhabited/experienced Feronia:
The porn folder on the harddrive left to John which was accessed by someone(I believe their name was Tim?) was entitled Anal Justice.
It’s in fact the title of that story, it’s not exactly ddescriptive of it, but the fact that it retains that title is indicitive of its level of sanity.
I won’t describe it to you, because...It’s not really possible, and the title alone should be enough to make you wonder about the humanoid named Tim(?).
Granted, it was on MY harddrive, but we all know I’m insane.
Yikes, GZeus. Insane!
Dan—so don’t let them read it. A. and I both still talk about how we are not either of our parents’ favorites; the weird part is that we are both the favorite in-laws (not much doubt in my mind there). And any person who had a sibling die would think that EXACT SAME THING. No reason to fight about it unless you yourself have no memory at all of being 18. (Admittedly, plenty of adults seem to not remember that, but you know what I’m saying.)
My dad found a poem I wrote (@16?) about him and asked me about it. It was very uncomfortable.
Fortunately or unfortunately, most of my freshman year poems are no longer extant.
FB—after reading my journal once when I was in 9th grade (and me getting into trouble for the contents), I don’t think my Mom ever deliberately read anything I wrote down. (Don’t know if it was because she was afraid of what she’s find out or if she was afraid I’d get even angrier at her about looking at stuff clearly labeled “private.”) Are you going to tell us what the poem was about?
(xpost to myself) I kind of want to modify that to “any person who had a sibling die when they were kids,” but I’m still self-absorbed enough to think that if H. really turns out to be ill that I would still have those thoughts.
Possibly this has to do, though, with what happened when I broke my arm while pregnant. I started writing out what happened, but I don’t want to get into it online. Suffice it to say that, while I’m sure my parents were very busy and all, it was pretty hurtful.
My friend once was trying to memorize the lyrics to a Nine Inch Nails song, so he ended up writing them on some mathhomework incidentally.
There was no convincing the school counselor he wasn’t suicidal.
I think I’ve written two poems in my life. Both thankfully lost/burned.
lol about the NIN song lyrics
Ned—no teenage poetry-writing habit? That’s just wrong!
I wrote one poem that could truly be called an effort.
I think I ATE it the next day. I wanted it to NOT EXIST.
I still remember lines. *shudder*
The rest of my ‘poems’ are either intentional tongue in cheek lyrics or stream of consiousness burroughs tribute things.
Ned—no teenage poetry-writing habit? That’s just wrong!
Hey, I can’t help it if you were all the spooky teenage poets. I was busy writing reviews for Tolkien fanzines (quel surprise).
Most of the time I spent reading rather than writing, aside from class assignments and all that. I didn’t start writing-as-such until senior year of UCLA when I was an irregular columnist for the Daily Bruin.
I was busy writing reviews for Tolkien fanzines (quel surprise).
Oh well, that explains everything.
Good lord have I written a lot of poems. Good lord are some of them bad.
But some of them are good, so it all evens out in your case.
“Losing My Electrons” & “Head Like a Halide”
Sara, I love these. Please post more of your song titles.
John has also written some great poems. Dude, I hope you haven’t lost them.
With modern literary perspectives(I..don’t use them, so I do need to ask) how does one determine if a poem is good, if the meaning is determined by the readers?
I mean, somethng the author, or even one reader to the next, likes could be something the next hates, all based on personal interperetation...
This is why I don’t like poetry. I have no idea what it means unless it’s explained or it’s explicit.
Also if you think about it modern literary theory is about 50 years old. Literature and poetry are thousands of years old.
I’m old-fashioned. Maybe that means I’m ‘excentric’ instead of ‘insane.’
I have numerous problems with ‘the new criticism’ or whatever, but that’s gonna be a blog. I’ll post it next year. I’ll start writing it next week.
FB, I will look up more song titles after lunch. (I looked in the notebooks because in studying for physiology I literally made the same joke—“Losing my Electrons”—to myself. SAD!)
I have a few of John’s poems and a few of Dan’s poems, each in ther own individual folders. I CLEARLY remember being on the staff of Revery and having John turn in 2 or 3 entire notebooks every year, though.
GZeus, I can only hope you wouldn’t understand some of the poems I wrote. Seriously.
GZeus, like/dislike can’t constructively be used in any general measure of good/not good.
Of course, if we get into a discussion of aesthetic theory, you’ll all end up killfiling me. I’ll probably end up killfiling myself, actually.
What is then becomes the problem. And I do mean like, not enjoy.
Without measurable meaning or likability being factors, what’s left? It’s a string of shapes with a history and cultural significance, but the latter can’t be a factor, as that leads toward contextual evidence...
This is why I dislike these kinds of ideas. They lead towards convolutions, cyclical arguments, and overcomplications. It reminds me of moral relavivism.
But again, this is stuff for that blog.
I’d be interested, John, but I suspect that you are heeding the better angels of your nature or whatever that phrase is.
FB is always up for discussions that might lead to DEATH.
Okay, so October 1991. Clearly I was trying to avoid my organic chem studying:
Top 10 Fave Chem Songs
10. Depeche Mode—Products Are Products
9. Erasure—Chains of Carbon
8. The Cure—Stereochemistry Street
7. Mudhoney—Let it React
6. Robyn Hitchcock—So You Think You Made Gold
5. Nirvana—Smells Like Acetesalicylic Acid*
4. Depeche Mode—A Question of Lead
3. Concrete Blonde—Everybody Reacts
2. Nine Inch Nails—Head Like a Halide
1. R.E.M.—Losing My Electrons
*acetysalicylic acid is aspirin; here I was also making a joke to myself about the first hour (9th grade) “practical chemistry” lab that Mr. Gr0ssm4n hadn’t tested where we were supposed to synthesize this chemical. It smelled SO strong and SO bad that people had to leave the room. The class periods after us didn’t have to do the experiment.
lol at stereochemistry street
wheedly wheedly whee chugga chugga whee dunt dunt dunt
This seems like a variation of my wheedliewheedliewheedliewheedlieweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeechunk-a-chunk
Apparently I was seriously bored during that era; I have followed that list with lists of my favorite and least favorite chemicals.
I don’t know what I had against tert-butyl alcohol, for example, but on the favorites list I have caffeine (C8H10N402) and NaCH (Sodium cyanide).
I hate all carbohydrates. Fuck a organic chemistry.
No.
IT BURNS
I can’t hate on the carbs. Bread! Chocolate! SUGAR! (Plus, carbon is the basis of all living things, so it’s hard to hate it totally. Still, why were you at GAC when I was taking that class? Probably a good thing; I might really have burned my orgo book if you had been around to encourage such a thing.)
God, could you imagine if we’d ALL gone to college together????
BEDLAM AND RUIN FOR EVERYONE, YAY
Would have made a lovely fire. God, I hated orgo. Midway through, I was at an A-. By the end of the semester, I had a C-. I literally evoked god in several problems (GOD3 = triatomic molecule get it haha) and BEER-OH functioned as a handy shortcut through a few nasty tributyl-whatshisface-type fiascoes.
I actually prefer chuggachuggawheechuggawheechuggawhee.
FB, you took orgo?!
Dan, it would have been worth the inevitable prison sentences to be at the same college with you guys. (For one thing, FB could have been my orgo lab partner—apparently—and he could have pointed out SARA YOU ARE CRUSHING ON ANOTHER GAY MAN STOP NOW, and saved me months of aggravation).
The serious downside: A. would likely have been scared away.
God, could you imagine if we’d ALL gone to college together????
BEDLAM AND RUIN FOR EVERYONE, YAY
TRUE
I actually prefer chuggachuggawheechuggawheechuggawhee.
HAHA. That’s good. What about ckbrrrrrrchrack-pop-EEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE
LOOKIT ME I CAN GET CLOSE TO MY AMP
By the way, BEER-OH = Beerahol. Oh, I thought it was so clever, especially while drunk.
That is pretty funny; did you actually write that on tests?! Good heavens. What possessed you to take orgo? I must know.
Was it the geology major?
God, could you imagine if we’d ALL gone to college together????
BEDLAM AND RUIN FOR EVERYONE, YAY
A vision.
yar (xpost)
Olaf has no geology department (that I know of). Was it fun? (Was orgo why you switched to philosophy?)
Now if Ned was at college with us all, well, that would have CHANGED EVERYTHING.
(for one thing, Ned and I would have gotten into a competition for who could grow their hair longer and then I would have been irritated because he won)
TIME TO PLAY FIND TEH HASTNGSER!
COARSE LITTLE MONSTER!
I was going to post JEFFE’s cameltoe emoticon here but now it seems like it would be... wrong.
lol... How on earth did you run across that?
I’m magical.
John was the model for Harry Potter. He speaks Parseltongue, too. True story!
\|/ or \||/ ? You decide.
Also: \*/ and (@).
Wait, is H011y the only Hastingsonian on that site?
I think so. Why?
Everyone who listens to music: Get Koss In-Ear headphones
In-Ear? Are they like those little earpieces that came with my iPod?
I have spent an inordinate amount of time on the checkbooks for my Dad’s stores this weekend. Every time I close my eyes I see numbers swimming there. Two down, one to go.
(I don’t think Sara has seen this yet.)
Han, the iPod ones are earbuds.
the Loss ones are like foam earplugs.
The only problems I’ve found are they make it blatantly obvious if one ear is different from the other and they’re LOUD.
deX, I saw that! I immediately thought, “if I had seen that out of context, I TOTALLY would have recognized Dan via the spelling of ‘deX!’” Totally hilarious.
Earbuds! That is the word I was searching for.
It is the loudness factor that makes me nervous with the “in ear” thing; I’d like to be able to hear still when I’m 65...
By loud I mean “your volume control won’t get above 3/10.”
My dad’s been sneaking smokes in the garage.
I stole all his matches and threw away the old aluminium can.
Now we wait to see if he says anything.

BEST BLOG EVER
THANKS DAN I NEED MORE WAYS TO WASTE TIME
Aside from working all weekend on a test and on these insufferable checkbook registers, yesterday I made White Russian cupcakes. The batter was really runny and there was more than I needed for 24 cupcakes, so I persuaded A. to make a few White Russian cupcake pancakes. Verdict: pretty good.
http://www.stoptazmo.com/20th_century_boys/
This authoor is amazing.
I don’t care if you never liked ‘comics,’ this is insanely good.
It’s almost as good as his previous work “Monster” which has been released here in English, but is also available illegally.
LISTEN TO THIS IMEDIATELY AS IT EXPLAINS THE INTRANUT AND IS BRILLIANTZ.
But I thought the internet was a series of tubes...
That song works either way.
Ok, Baily’s Irish Cream is attempting to shift its target audience from white women to black men.
.......ZUH?
Maybe they figure they have nailed down the “clown white” woman demographic. (They’ve got me for sure; I just bought a bottle of Bailey’s last month!)
I have no idea what the maximum file size is on MySpace music, but I’m having troubles...
Long song...

“WHAT DO WE SOUND LIKE” doesn’t exist on sandboxes, to my knowledge, but some of you might enjoy this.
Opossum is the most accessable, as it’s intentionally melodic.
How do you think the guy who wrote the song used in Trojan commericals feels?
Then there’s this:

Just a note—it looks like NU-(nu-nu-whatever)ILX is up and functioning. Check out this thread for more:
oh we had one of these?

forgot about that lil dude
oh man perusing the all caps FITE upthread is rofflesome
hahaha no lie
Ey up or something.
Okay, I read through part of this and wound up laughing so hard that I was crying pretty hard and then there were no tissues available and my eyes kind of hurt.
I have recovered (mostly) and wish all HSTNGS-related people a happy weekend...
yay Bestival double CD
BOO Cure lineup with only one guitar, the lack of Porl/Perry is very very noticeable
on the plus side Robert sounds fantastic
I feel like we have all fallen into some kind of holiday-created hole. But I’m not dead at least.
Any other HSTNGS survivors?
Miss you guys...
my sister and i are going to a HSTNGS-related get together on the 26th iirc
^^^post again afterwards if you survive ;)
yay I started my Xmas shopping
I think I finished mine today?
Sadly, I despise wrapping and so that is going to ruin the rest of the week for me.
Okay, maybe it will just make the week mildly annoying.
Wrapping: still not finished!
Me: yeah, I still know how to procrastinate. I’ve still got it, people.
lol I’ve wrapped up everything I’ve bought so far
i have been done with christmas shopping for like 2 weeks
its weird
also if you all havent read “The Magicians” by Lev Grossman you totally should
I want to go back to the world where I am ahead of John in organization.
SERIOUSLY PEOPLE WHAT IS HAPPENING HERE
ps haven’t read or even heard of that book, because I live under a rock, etc. etc. Will add to hopeless TBR list at Goodreads, tho, thx
lol it was already on my list, we see how well that is working here. Description sounds ace, tho
HAPPY CHRISTMAS EVE DAY HSTNGS
Drink some eggnog and unwrap some presents for me.
Happy New Year to all, especially HSTNGS-related types. <3 to you all and stay safe tonight.
happy new year hastings<3
let’s go to the stube
HAPPY NEW YEAR’S Y’ALL
Everybody live through the night?
I did, despite my friend M4rn13 attempting to murder me slowly with boozy eggnog, wine, champagne, and bourbon.
I think I need to go drink six more cups of coffee now.
