this isn’t grammar, neither, but what is it with UK newsprint publications and their capricious attitude towards periods, a.k.a. full stops—especially those that mark the end of an article? i run into this syndrome constantly. in last week’s TLS, f’rinstance, the bizarre review of the probably bizarre-er “zombies and consciousness” (oxford press) end as follows:

“It is because he underestimates the depth and variety of zombist positions that his arguments fails”

Perhaps it was written by a zombie. For the undead there is no ending.
