Using a testserver at radiostreamer.com I’m streaming music off my hard drive for 24 hours (until 12 noon EST tomorrow). I’m using a radio automation system to randomly pick songs. It’s in demo mode, so every half hour or so, an annoying “buy this software” announcement comes on and I have to restart the stream. I’m testing how this all works so we can get the radio station I’m starting online, in advance of getting our transmitter tower built and all the money raised to equip a real studio.

Anyway, check it out! I’m not sure how many concurrent listeners can listen at once. Go to radiostreamer.com, click “skip intro”, then in the table under Test Server 1, click “listen”.

I’ll take requests.

I’ll be away from this computer for an hour or so from 4:30 to 5:30.

No guarantees about the sound quality of the mp3s on my hard drive or the sequence in which songs play.

Feedback about webstreaming and radio and music welcome.

Lorne Green—Pop Goes the Hammer

I’ve got LCD Soundsystem’s 45-minute Nike thing scheduled for 4:22 (in about an hour). Hopefully the “buy this software announcement” won’t kill it too soon.

i am listening (quietly)

oops, don’t know why the program doesn’t like Katatonia.

I’m downloading all kinds of stuff at the moment AND it’s about 10PM (in a university city in Belgium, all the students are online and my broadband is usually VERY slow now), but the stream is very stable indeed, no skips at all. Quite impressive, I’m not used to this this time of night.

It’s only 64 kbps in my winamp, and that page you linked to says there’s maximum 3 listeners, so I don’t know how it’ll be when using higher bitrates and more listeners (you do plan on having more than three, right?)

BTW: it’s 64 kbps/44 Khz—I don’t know for sure, but isn’t that 44 Khz a bit high for that bitrate? (I mean, wouldn’t 92 kbps / 32 Khz be more efficient?)

Note: I’m not a sound pro, I was just wondering.

When we get the stream going for real, it will be at www.wvvy.org and we’ll start with two streams, one low and one high bandwidth. We’ll start with the capability for 40 listeners at a time.

Stan, thanks for the input about the Khz. I just set it up with the default settings, but I’ll check into it.

yeah, i can’t get a stream, too many listeners

the radio station I’m starting online, in advance of getting our transmitter tower built and all the money raised to equip a real studio.

*raises his glass to that*

godspeed!

(Kingfish, I’ll leave and listen again a bit later on, check it out nnnnnnnnow!)

Now playing LCD Soundsystem for the next 45 minutes while I pick up kids, etc. If the stream stops in the meantime, I’ll be back at about 5:15 to restart it. Thanks for listening!

And there’s space for 1 more listener now.

i’m on a connection too slow to stream stuff on, but just put the LCD thing on a few minutes before opening this thread. Ha!

maria- you’re talking about WMVY, correct?

I like the varied selection of music—it’s a bit like the BE SURE TO REGISTER YOUR VERSION OF SAM AT GOBBLEYOUBOBBLEYOUROBBLEYOU’LL FEEL WARM AND SQUISHY WHEN YOU DO more rocking version of this fine BBC show

no wVvy—new station

grady: were you asking if there’s a link between wmvy and wvvy? (wvvy.org does mention Martha’s Vinyard and wmvy is a station from there, isn’t it?)

... or did you really think Maria didn’t know the name of her own radio station? :-)

we’re going to be the local competition—low-power as opposed to full-power—community non-profit, not commercial.

i wasn’t paying attention to Maria’s e-mail adress until after I posted that! felt kind of stupid when i realized. I knew that Maria lived on MV and assumed incorrectly as to which radio station this was for.

fwiw, WMVY is where I discovered the Rolling Stones.

xp: that sounds radical.

now playing Rufus’s requests

I’m off to bed now, (just when the Crazy Frog started!?) but I’ll be checking at work over the wireless connection there tomorrow morning :-)

(xpost: phew!)

leaving it unattended now for awhile

I’m about to drop Scott’s super summer mix in.

HELLO DERE!

this song is xrated

We were listening while cleaning Donald’s office. Three mummified mice!

One was under the (rumpled) rug at the door, so we were stepping on him every time we entered the office. He was really flat.

now you must find tiny scarab beetles and insert them into their wrappings, otherwise these mice will have a hard time in the underworld.

After this Scott mix gets interrupted by the “register your software and feel warm and squishy” voice, I’m going to play a rare Beta Band thing.

do we need to help think about possible tests for the software?

e.g.

Does it keep a playlist? (“what did I hear just before King Sunny Adé last night?”)

Does it support live voices as well? (“Let’s phone Scott in the kitchen for an update on that soup situation”)

or isn’t that within the scope of this test?

Oh, it’s down—did you stop? (test server 1 is “Online—Not In Use”)

back on now

I fell asleep—because my liucense key to the software hasn’t come yet, yhe SAM Broadcaster stops every half hour (demo mode)

the software in full mode does those things, but I don’t have the set up yet.

I’m copying my friend Jim’s system. He runs gtownradio.com

Also worth checking out

Actually even in demo mode it does. It shows a history of the songs you’ve played.

Listening again—still no buffering and not one skip, very very stable streaming stuff, even when listening from the other side of the (well, ok, Belgium) world

What’s this weird beta—band-01 thing that’s been playing for the last 20 or so minutes?

That was a rare Beta Band tape. I’ve changed it now. Now playing Lifter Puller.

You’ve got a microphone! *waves at his laptop*

oh, something’s going on, the playlist isn’t advancing anymore (rhythm—mirth, since before the last REGISTER SQUISHY thing a couple of minutes ago)

FYI: just disconnected & reconnected: still Rhythm—Mirth in the playlist

That rhythm mirth thing is a long set of songs I put together as a podcast for our website using Audacity. The squishy announcement interrupted it, so I tried my hand at starting it again, but was having trouble cueing it up to where I wanted.

I won’t be able to listen anymore today, but it was an enjoyable preview, thanks :-)

THANKS to all of you who tuned in! That concludes my broadcast day.

Now I’m streaming forever — but waiting for a new computer to come in the mail before I set it up officially and link it on our website. Still have the annoying ad to register software that bumps people off the stream until I get the new computer and register the software. Right now I’m rebroadcasting something I ripped from w f m u.

The stream can be accessed at http://rs1.radiostreamer.com:8360 Now up to 40 people can listen at once.

maybe I should start a new thread in celebration—although this still isn’t the *real* webstream cuz it’s just my music collection on auto-dj instead of a line up including the couple of dozen people here who want shows once the radio station goes live.

Now playing something truly weird that Scott put together by recording a tv show on tape and using a second tape recorder to edit and mix. It’s called Sally Shoe and lasts about 20 minutes. Not for most people.

this shoe thing is sick

is that sally jessy?

yup

“you’re dissecting people!”

i’m gonna put up the whole 22 minute version of sallyshoe tomorrow on ilm, jody. just to warn you.

http://rs1.radiostreamer.com:8360/ :

Server is currently down.

:-(

Oh, I could start it up if you’d like. I still have it running on my computer with demo software, but the real deal computer should be here Monday (says the FedEx tracking info).

It’s up now.

Thanks! :-)

And yay for the real deal!

(it is? I’m still getting server down...) (but I’m not at home for the rest of the day, don’t bother just for me)

Oops, my computer crashed just now. Maybe there’s a reason for having a dedicated computer. I’ll restart it now.

ok, it’s official. You should be able to get a 64k or 24k webstream by going to wvvy.org We should be streaming now indefinitely without any of those “register your software” msgs. If anyone wants to send me a mix, I’ll play it on our stream. YSI?

(If you try today and we’re down, I’m just moving the computer to its semipermanent home. Check back in a half hour.)

I put some ILXor songs from ILXor Comp Vol. 2 in the mix. Hope nobody minds (let’s be cool).
