i enjoyed this! was a huge tintin fan as a kid so it’s fun to see them go all out w/ it even if it’s not the most faithful adaptation

Saw it yesterday and loved it; agreed that the crane fight and the whole extra arc of Haddock caught up in a Red Rackham blood feud was overegging the pudding — and damn were they bending over backwards to try and figure out how to moralize Haddock out of drinking but still have him drinking at the end anyway — but otherwise great stuff. Missed Snowy getting in at least one spoken-word aside; thought the fusion of Crab With the Golden Claws and Secret of the Unicorn paid off a little better than I would have guessed beforehand. The two really extensive set-pieces of the pirate ship battle and the chase through Bagghar were top notch.

Also loved the endless throwaway references and jokes — the caricaturist at the start of the film is unsurprisingly Herge himself, the sultan’s fountains in his palace are but of course crabs with golden claws, etc.

Also sounds like they’re going to go right ahead and do Red Rackham’s Treasure next time through with an obviously redone plot; since that’s the one that introduces Calculus maybe that’ll be fused with The Calculus Affair somehow...?

have they said they’re doing that or were you just reading into the ending? i assumed since they already used the twist ending of Red Rackham’s Treasure in this movie that they were just gonna ditch the rest of it, since that book is more of a comedy one than an action one anyway

imdb has Prisoners of the Sun as subtitle of the next one. No idea if there’ll be other books mashed into it.

i thought this was great. far surpassed my expectations.

literally all I know about Tin-Tin is that jess once hardsonned someone on ILX where he said “not all black people look like tin tin characters” when someone complained that he made Danger Mouse brown in his idolator MS Paint drawings

I really can’t see them ditching it entirely — it does introduce Calculus specifically in the context of said treasure hunt, and the shark submarine rules, so. But if that and Prisoners of the Sun got smooshed together, well, it could work...

well book-wise, ‘prisoners of the sun’ was part 2 of ‘seven crystal balls’ so they’ve already got 2 books worth to work with. can’t remember if calculus had an important role in those or if he was just there for the sake of being there
