feel guilty abt falling so hard for this fn hipster apple
in a word, yes
its so crisp!
Never had it!
it’s no arkansas black but
i learned in the new yorker its cause it has larger than average cella so rather than slicing between the cells u bite right through them producing explosions of crisp
*cells
yes
no still golden delicious all the way.
When the ripeness is off they are not so good imo
feel like all other apples are like chewing on a coco leaf and honey crisp is 20 lines to the dome
its like the first time u saw mtv
i dont think we get honeycrisp in the uk + ive gotta say that new yorker article made me curious
macoun 4 life
theres apparently some other new honey crisp type apple out, there was a times article abt it cant recall what its called

lol no wait im just thinking of the nyer article and its the sweetango apple
Sometimes they are too crisp, like the are overcompensating.
Then they taste like engineered apples, it’s odd.
I heard about this recently, just had my first, good to know its a hipster apple, thanks
they’re tart
and crisp
and juicy
they’re everything i ever wanted from an apple and when they disappear, i feel bereft
HONEYCRIIIIIISP
don’t ever leave me
yah mr farmer thats what makes me guilty and provoked the cocaine comparison yr like this is a fabricated experience but ITS SO MUCH BETTER THAN REALITY
Ah
Apt
these are the favorite apples of the evil queen on abc’s /once upon a time/
They are the only apples my eleven year old niece will eat.
man sweettango is a dumb ass name so is honey crisp, feel really taken advantage of by this marketing tsunami i am powerless against
Remy OTM — it’s all about the Black Ark.
the apple really is THAT GOOD though
it’s awful
they’re even good when they have bruises
you are all applebrainwashed
is that because i have eaten one of these ambrosia fruits every day for months?
am i dying to stay alive?
i like these but no, i still enjoy other apples
winter 2010–2011 was my winter of Pink Lady apples
this winter is honeycrisp mania
this thread is a vision
so i need to go back and read that new yorker article, huh
my mouth feels explody when i eat one
i like honeycrisps but the huge ones they get at my grocery store sometimes are like softballs. mushy globes.
WE STARTED THIS HONEYCRISP SHIT
THIS THE MUTHAFUCKIN THANKS WE GET?
Minnesota all day—put the apple game on BLAST
real talk, wait till you see the other flavorful shit we got cookin’ up in the lab, you be up on it in like 5 years
Honeycrisps are too big, IMO.
Still prefer Galas for my snackin’ apples.

I feel like on this subject the opinion of Mr. Farmer should be trusted tbh
i find a wide variety of sizes of honeycrisps. still like other apples too.
but no matter how crisp honeycrisps get, they are not to be outcrisped by a good FUJI
that is just pure delusion
gala, guys.
actually now that I’ve thought about it I dont buy that they’re hipster apples because I heard about it from some old ladies
were they pink
also honeycrisp is an oxymoron when you think about it honey can’t be crisp it’s gooey it’s liquid it’s viscous & amorphous hellOOOOO was anybody thinking at all when they came up with this name??
The Excelsior Experiment Station of the University of Minnesota has, since the 1930s, introduced a steady progression of important hardy apples that are widely grown, both commercially and by backyard orchardists, throughout Minnesota and Wisconsin. Its most important introductions have included ‘Haralson’ (which is the most widely cultivated apple in Minnesota), ‘Wealthy’, ‘Honeygold’, and ‘Honeycrisp’.
would like to try Haralson and Wealthy
the name is based on 90s cereal nostalgia
Just glad no one is repping for Jazz apples on this thread.
ONLY KARL MALONE could pull that off
pick and troll
Jazz are great, like a better version of a Pink Lady, but i don’t see them in shops very much around here. Never seen a Honeycrisp, probably never will :(
the name is based on 90s 60s cereal nostalgia

Jazz apples have a hint of acetone flavor, I think.
We happened to be in Sebastopol (CA) once during the short Gravenstein season, and got a few at the farmer’s market — those were some game-changing apples right there.
big honeycrisps are too big — it’s the little ones i can’t quit
jazz apples are second best but they’re usually not on sale

^^gets it
Not sure I’ve noticed small Honeycrisps. Usually I just make a beeline for the Galas, though. I’m a man of habit.
they are in big bags of little apples just like the galas, only they taste AWESOME
nothing that comes out of the u of m is ‘hipster’ come on now
gala, jazz, pink lady, braeburn, i’m not picky, i’m a big apple skank
nothing with ‘delicious’ in the name tho thx, i’m eating it not cursing a princess.
honeycripss are really good but not quite worth the extra money #shotsfired
I like the McIntoshes when I can find them.
cortlands are good when they are ripe and the flesh is firm yet pillowy
there’s a starchiness about a good cortland that’s hard to replicate imo
i eat at least two of these bad boys a day. the big ones are where the money is. i like it when i go for a bite and half the side fractures off and i’m chewing on way too much apple. best.

I like honeycrisp a lot but prefer something more tart like northern spy.
what about....a prairie spy?
northern spy is the best apple for pies (and can be kinda hard to find sometimes)
I used northern spy for my apple pie for thanksgiving, it was good
seemed pretty mushy when I was cutting it up though, I hate mushy apples
it’s no arkansas black but

Cox’s Orange Pippin
Egremont Russet
William Crump

pink lady pink lady pink lady
I hate sweet apples! They have to be tart-verging-on-sour for me to like them.
wait are Haralsons are MN only??????? NO WONDER I CAN’T FIND THEM
my dad has started eating SweeTangos like they are made out of The Stuff, I fully expect him to explode into a pile of apples around New Year’s
imna try out a sweeTango as soon as i can get my mitts on one
I had completely forgotten there was an apple variety named after me! Someday I’ll try to be in the UK from Oct-Dec to taste one.

We used to give our patients a pink enema that was called “Pink Lady Enema” and that’s how the MD’s would order it. The pharmacy would make it up with a mixture of things, like mineral oil, but I don’t know what made it pink!
ordered two of these last week iirc
and how do you feel now
asks the chucklebutt
they didn’t chuckle, they wept
“weepbutt” just sounds... awful

ok i just bought honeycrisp & arkansas black for apple thunderdome.
we’re sorting this out!
it’s not looking good for arkansas black...
ok they both tasted kind of bleagh after leaving them out for awhile. jazz apples still the best!
jazz apples are a neat lil apple package. maybe they wouldn’t be be such a good option if they were bigger, myabe the extra bites would expose some flaws, but they’re just right the way they are, a perfect little apply window in your day.
surprised FUJIs only got one mention in this thread, they are a market leader imo. i never ate a honeycrisp. i don’t like apples that look too much like cartoon apples, idk if i would be into arkansas black?
Ark Black has a thick peel which is sometimes a little bitter — I always peel mine. But the inside is wonderful, really tart but balanced, not a punch in the mouth like Granny Smith.
Honey Crisp is one of the better widely-available apples, but a bit big, sugary, wet, and, as said above, engineered-feeling. Imo, the best cultivars for eating include the Mcintosh, Paula Red, Cortland, Macoun, Stayman-Winesap (what Red Delicious should taste like), Golden Russet, and York, while the best for pie-making are tarter green apples like the Rhode Island Greening and Newtown Pippin. These are all American, and primarily Northeastern.
Stayman-Winesap
I forgot about these, they’re sooo good.
Pinata is my jam this week.
Fujis for all time. Whole Foods checkout lady asked if my apple was a Fuji or Honeycrisp and I thought of this thread.
But actually now I’m intrigued to try all these honeycrisps.
eating a dope fuji right now, dense crisp flavorfull a bit tart, they were out of honeycrisp
I finally had a honeycrisp this week. One expects the teeth to sink in palate deep, and then some resistance, but they glide right through a honeycrisp. Flavor was a bit less notable.
Wish I still lived in Madison, WI. There was a family orchard stand at the Saturday farmer’s market proferring obscure Japanese cultivars that were amazing. I can’t remember their names, but oh god were they good.
Nutrition nazi aside: Dr. Greger at nutritionfacts has some videos about apples. This one ranks apple cultivars for phenolic content:
Honeycrisp does suprisingly well, placing third among commercial varieties tested (after winner Idared and 2nd place Red Delicious).
Bought a small tasting selection from my local trendy grocers. Pink Lady: a new one to me, pleasingly crisp and fresh, basically sweet, but not overpoweringly so. I like. Russet: also crisp, skin can be a bit rough which gives a somewhat disconcerting mouthfeel, but tastewise it’s not predominantly sweet or tart—it just tastes like a fuckin’ apple. Quintessence of apple. Coxes: always my favourite. Crisp again—fuck a soft apple imo—and a perfect balance of sweet and tart.
One of the best things about being in the UK vs the US is being able to get proper apples really easily and cheaply. It’s been all about Windsor/Cox/Russet apples this autumn so far.
“proper apples”
I think when I lived in the UK I bought Fijis.
proper apples jolly good cup o tea governor *pumps cocked arm jauntily*
