It’s friends who say to me “jesus, you have an elephant’s hide when it comes to dealing with internet crap, and *you* have trouble there? What is gonna happen to someone like me, who is actually sensitive and quite self conscious about getting blasted for saying the wrong thing?”
This almost exactly mimics my experience with trying to get smart people with interesting opinions to post to ILX. They may well be all wrong, but it’s certainly what they experience. It could be that ILX only wants internet hardmen on the board in which case it’s not an issue, but assuming that we actually want a more diverse spread of views on here, then we’re gonna have to take another look.
+1 for name change to “Flag Post” or similar, that would be a good start, it makes it sound significantly less aggressive. SM OTM.
xxxxps
We’re talking about something that has had an impact on a v small number of people who needed to change their behavior.
tell us more about the “model poster” we should all aspire to
‘flog poster’ even better

flag sitta post
Flag obv. short for flagellate
You mean this was a semantic argument all along? Good lord. (agreed that FP sounds better tho, and knowing there is no magic 51=autoban lessens my ire considerably)
The fact is that some (very very few) comedy bans are unearned, and a few posters in the past probabably shouldn’t’ve been hounded off the board. But if you go into a community (message board) and manage to piss off 51 people, you’re probably not in the right place and should leave, and if you need the incentive of 51 irriated posters clicking GET YE GONE to push you over an edge, you likely lack the social graces to respond to a gentler push.
Call it “FLAG POST” or “WHIP” or “FLING POOP” or “SUGGEST BAN” and it’s all the same thing, although it might seem a little more pleasant.
the thing i don’t get about SBs is why the mods etc seem so determined to defend and maintain a system
tbf I don’t think they are. Some are, but some also dislike it just as much. I personally am for it on balance (obv) but don’t pretend it’s anything like perfect or doesn’t have problems.
(one thing I think could maybe appeal specifically to a mod about it is that’s it’s at least more democratic than just banning on a single mod’s opinion, which means the common and easy “x was just banned because a mod hates them personally, the board adores their roguish ways and telling of truth to fools” mod attack is harder to sustain.) xp
Remy otm. Rolo—obv there’s no model poster but if 51 ppl think you’re doing something wrong and/or offensive then there’s probably something up that you should take a look at.
Who are these scared people getting their info about ILX or the SB from? I’ve certainly shared some unpopular opinions over the years and have never had more than 10 SBs at any one time as far as I know. Could it be that they’re not getting a very balanced view of how the whole thing works?
If this is about semantics I’ll rep for a button that says SHAME, SHAME and displays to the idiot a cartoon .gif of Newman in Jurassic Park locking out the computer system.
where are all these vicious attacks on the lone & reasonable dissenters taking place? Should i be even more glad than i am that i don’t post to ilm?
fwiw i have also had the exact same response many many times re: getting people to post here
That is so very strange. I’d still like to know where they’re getting their info from.
This almost exactly mimics my experience with trying to get smart people with interesting opinions to post to ILX. They may well be all wrong, but it’s certainly what they experience.
Yes, mine too, and I get mail to this end, and this problem is part of the thinking behind SB — posters shouldn’t have to be internet hardmen to post on ILX. But I don’t think many people would argue that ILX is actually cuddlestein, and these posters are somehow confused.
What FT seems to be saying, though, that it’s not the need to be an internet hardman that her potential posters are scared of, but SB itself. Which I don’t fully understand. It might be happening, but I don’t think it’s half as common as people getting put off by the rambunctiousness.
Anybody I’ve directed to the board who doesn’t post cites the ridiculous number of in-jokes and pervasive meta-metaness and cliqueyness. I’ve never had anybody say anything about the HARD MAN CULTURE because for fuckssakes, I post on here and I am giant wuss.
I’d still like to know where they’re getting their info from.
from reading the boards?
SB has no impact on people being internet dicks! it clamps down on the LOUDEST posters, not the meanest ones
yeah the cliqueyness seems like more of a barrier, you sorta have to have a loud personality to be noticed xp
very in favor of ‘FLING POOP’
yeah but lex thats an important distinction from what stet was arguing against, which was the idea that SB was preemptively thwarting people from coming here to post.
Idk what to do about the meanness in this world
xxp
when did this turn into an encounter group
What FT seems to be saying, though, that it’s not the need to be an internet hardman that her potential posters are scared of, but SB itself.
Yes, can’t agree with this. SB had been up and running for like a month before i even knew what it was.
more than that I think ILX’s culture of piling on the “undesirables” and the really nasty/personal attacks are what makes the message board suck.
where are the threads where we do this, i want in
Remy otm. Rolo—obv there’s no model poster but if 51 ppl think you’re doing something wrong and/or offensive then there’s probably something up that you should take a look at.
I really don’t agree with that since there’s a real junior high mentality around here and you see posters just openly saying “everybody, you need to sb this guy”
I don’t think these challops that get people banned are that indefensible, just that most posters who agree are probably afraid to say so
srsly
The SB functionality isn’t so much the problem as the culture around it, obviously, or there’d be no thread.
I seriously have a hard time believing that people would be afraid to post to ILX for fear of being SB’d when only a handful of people (all of whom deserved it in one way or another) have ever acutally been SBd. That is just ridiculous and makes me think people are exaggerating the SB system and what it entails/results in.

Flagged post for excellence and otm’ness
you see posters just openly saying “everybody, you need to sb this guy”
As a joke surely
there are some ‘challenging opinions’ itt that make me miss sb thats for sure
What FT seems to be saying, though, that it’s not the need to be an internet hardman that her potential posters are scared of, but SB itself. Which I don’t fully understand. It might be happening, but I don’t think it’s half as common as people getting put off by the rambunctiousness.
there are like a zillion factors that make ilx what it is & the delicate engineering & interlacing of each is part of what makes ilx—i am sure there is some sort of balanced interplay even between ilx as hardman central & ilx as sb-haven that give it some kind of character or suggest an appropriate degree of leeway. there are a million things that would or wouldn’t make ilx a desirable place to post to—privacy, aesthetics of taste, aesthetics of message boards, dominant posting style, &c&c&c—& so speculating on those that are lost or deterred by the occurrence of some of these traits feel weird—i’m sure others would be deterred or attracted by some other alternate-universe slight-variation on ilx. ilx is real good to read, a lot of good discussion happens on it, i’m sure some of that is down to what it’s like.
you see posters just openly saying “everybody, you need to sb this guy”
As a joke surely
yeah seriously this is like almost exclusively aerosmith when someone talks shit about rice or something, i can’t really remember a lot of sincere, indignant “please suggest ban this awful man” going on
he really does like rice
suggest basmati
Flag pasta
I really don’t agree with that since there’s a real junior high mentality around here and you see posters just openly saying “everybody, you need to sb this guy”
Yes. And it never happens that people actually all freak out and run to the SB. I’m sure other mods will back me up on this, but I’ve never ever seen this happen, except in the unfortunate (?) instance of Whiney and the Big Bottom Birds. The most flags I’ve ever seen for a single post are, like 4 or 5, and that has happened v, v, v, rarely.
Nearly every single instance of awful piling on that I can recall occurs b/w board regulars, and escalates slowly over time; not as the result of a single trigger-happy SB culture.
i like rice
and pasta
also if anybody wants to come see my one new band, Whiney and the Big Bottom Birds, we’ll be playing a benefit gig next week for victims of unnecessary SBing
haha I was gonna say, at least this thread created a great bandname
the unfortunate (?) instance of Whiney and the Big Bottom Birds
how is this not a childrens book
xp lol

you see posters just openly saying “everybody, you need to sb this guy”
As a joke surely
Yeah I have never, ever seen this happen seriously.
Unless I’ve got it all wrong and everytime someone posts “SB’d you for that” they are actually SB’ing people.
Blah blah blah SB is an infringement of my human rights blah blah
i am not really gonna retroactively sb carnitas just for the record
there are like a zillion factors that make ilx what it is & the delicate engineering & interlacing of each is part of what makes ilx
otm. I think some of the things that prevent people posting are desirable, in that they keep out the type of posts that make other forums so insufferable, while otoh some of them keep out the type of posts ILX wants.
The real challenge is finding the balance. I’ve said before that ILX shouldn’t be 4chan, but nor should it be Metafilter.
ilx: the best parts of 4chan and metafilter
they keep out the type of posts that make other forums so insufferable,
I’ve never been on another forum!
metafilter: the garrison keillor of the internet

Why do you think ILX has such a large lurking contingent, while there only seem to be a couple of dozen regular posters? Hint: it’s not the lolcat threads. ILX is great for intellectual tussling, but you guys hit hard, and unless you’re v.good at standing on your own two feet right off the bat, it’s intimidating, scary and nasty.
this is so sad!
just came to 77 and hang ten if someone doesn’t like your opinion on the weeknd or whatever, it’s such a bummer that people are afraid to contribute!
i think the internet has created this tendency for people to always have to feel “right” or that they are offering an opinion that seems correct or whatever. people worry too much about looking like they are “wrong,” they also worry too much about what other people think.
lurkers worry about sb, apparently
Lurkers come forth, y’all can’t be as bad as whiney and he survived four sbullets
yeah the average posters will never get more than 10 sbs during his/her duration as a poster
seriously, if you’re a lurker and then you bravely come forth and offer your opinions, and they are so bad and hated that you get SB’d purely because you’re so wrong all the time (and not because of a combative posting style or because you’re actually insane), then i salute you. that would be amazing.
fu i’m permanently on 12
yeah I think the #1 stumbling block over getting new people to post is not fear of SB but fear of standing out among noted internet personalities!
I mean I think even lurkers understand why somebody like frogsbs gets SB’d, repeatedly, just mashed into the ground, over and over
I am unexpectedly missing the ilx thread where we ask a mod how many suggest bans we have. I don’t feel right that we currently inhabit a world where that’s an impossibility.
there was a time when I was at 11, but last I checked I was @ 9
I don’t know much about frogsbs or most of the other ‘victims’ of the SB tbh, apart from Dom and Geir, they haven’t really made much impression on me either way
But I suppose that’s down to the threads you chose to post in

ILX is great for intellectual tussling, but you guys hit hard, and unless you’re v.good at standing on your own two feet right off the bat, it’s intimidating, scary and nasty. Fold that into the fact that not everyone has skin made of iron and can shrug off mean, nasty, ad hominem attacks, and I don’t think it’s too much of a stretch to say that ILX’s success is despite of SB, not because of it.

and his name was gabneb
haha otm
hahaha, ok but that was a rare exception, no regrets
yup
He’s back though.
do we know that for a fact?
ya I guessed the same thing but was just spectulating
i support letting everyone ever banned back in, sb modban or whatever, we can always ban them again right
Oh, and hi guys. :)

i just really dislike the whole literally casting people out aspect of it all—if i were SB’d it would suck but i know i could definitely handle it, but it seems to hit others harder. i’m glad we’ve done away with permabans but i really think we ought to reconsider 30 day SBs as well, it just seems really cruel and unnecessary given the offenses most have gotten it for, and it seems to me like a temp mod-thread ban would suffice in most cases. i’d actually be a lot more OK with SB if it were like for a week instead of 30 days, i think that seems much more fair; all of us post here every damn day as it is so it’s not like a week would be a slap on the risk.
as for improving the SB experience, many of us have suggested various reasonable things that could be implemented, none of which have been put into place or even seriously considered, such as a running SB count that you could check on the ‘boards’ page or something (to his credit forks and maybe iirc WmC have taken it upon themselves to email people who’ve amassed at least 40 (no, i haven’t gotten one of these, lol)), or a notification when you are SB’d, and a way to see the post for which you were SB’d. another idea could be for the SB’ers to leave a comment of some kind, either to the SB’ee or to the mods, or both. i realize this would entail some more coding for the admins who i’m sure are busy as it is. i also strongly dislike the anonymity of SB, but that’s kind of a personal thing i guess. it seems really cowardly to me—it seems like the person being SB’d should know who is accusing him or her of ruining the board for someone else, and why
for the most part i think ppl itt are kinda of the mind that it won’t happen to them, other ppl should just get over it, which is kinda sad and pretty much counter to the way most ppl on this board ime go about thinking about other (admittedly more macro and important) issues
nothin but love
i still want to see these threads where ppl ‘hit hard’ feel like im missing all the good stuff rn
stfu jerk!
lol pwn
deal w/it (-B
kev k, ime, carries challenging opinions but does it pretty well
The reason a lot of ppl think sb won’t ever happen to them is because it won’t. I’m a dick but i’ve avoided it, for instance. There is a major behavioural input from the individual racking up 51 sb’s and even if it came as a surprise to them, from any reasonable POV it shouldn’t have
That’s obv just a ~dude’s~ theory though and we’re just callous brutes telling ppl how to feel so y’know caveat emptor
just came to 77 and hang ten
i still think of 77 as the place where the cliquier ilxors go to bitch about others behind their back
if only
there are no cliques on ilx anymore
Some real great stuff on 88, before real ilx crashed—lots of bitching and complaining and zinging.
does that happen tho? (xp at lex)
it’s mainly people talking about their mornings or posting fb stuff
i like the idea of being able to include a message when you sb someone, feel like this could be the ultimate secret board
haha ok finally figured out who p much resigned to deems is, sup dmac
sb chatz
excellent concept
Suggest ban anyone who fucks with Cary Grant’s name in The Philadelphia Story.

sb anyone who outs ilxors on this board

no kidding there were some pretty disgusting things posted there especially from people I thought were respectible otherwise
Again, I don’t know what 77 is. I’m just not paying sufficient attention here.
x-post Oh come on now, that’s just horseshit.
Not just horseshit—that’s p much a flat out lie unless there are a whole bunch of 77 threads that I haven’t read but I don’t think that’s actually the case.
WHO R U ROLO TONY?
(ps wb orangey)
I have no idea what your DN is referring to but that sounds like a cru whose membership criteria I would surely meet. :)
Honestly we mostly talk about tits on 77 tbh
cf. atm machine
test
there was some shit on 77 early on, but i mean it is now the love-in zone of cuddlestein
btw if Rolo T is who I suspect he is then I think I know which thread he’s referring to and would like to point out that it was not a 77 thread. If he’s not then I apologize and pls carry on etc.
I have no idea what your DN is referring to but that sounds like a cru whose membership criteria I would surely meet. :)
ha just oblique for olbique’s sake, mostly inspired by you and DJP chumming around in the brony thread.
Not just horseshit—that’s p much a flat out lie unless there are a whole bunch of 77 threads that I haven’t read but I don’t think that’s actually the case.
maybe i’m thinking of the wrong board but the fact is that things get pretty nasty
some ilxors initially took the opportunity to use 77 to snark on other ilxors who weren’t yet on there didn’t they? certain people (all since long gone whether mod-banished or sb’d into reform) in a place with that ‘secretive’ context would inevitably do this. a bit like what happened on noise for a while. once enough regulars joined it and warnings about what was/wasn’t acceptable were in place this died out soon enough. that is my recollection.
also there’s a rule that you can’t talk about posters not on 77, on 77.
our recollection of the past is so faint. we must consult the ILX griot about the happenings in the before-time of the never-world.
RT—It’s true—that thread that I think you’re referring to isn’t the nicest but it’s not on 77. It happens. I just don’t like when ppl think 77 is like some elite bitch fest. It’s more so ppl can post details about their jobs and stuff without worrying about them getting found. Also, tits and Mark Ruffalo.
noise bord enemies list was hilar
also there’s a rule that you can’t talk about posters not on 77, on 77
True!
I want to know what thread curious and rolo are talking about now, that’s what I want to know.
noise bord enemies list was hilar
Yes.
mid 00s noize bord revival
good times
laughter
also there’s a rule that you can’t talk about posters not on 77, on 77.
mmm and why was this rule needed
Because like 5 guys talked about dudes in the first few weeks of 77.
and hatched devious plots like posting snoopheadshack.gif in your threads. it had to be stopped!
lol at lex, no offense.
- 77 is where everyone talks behind everyone’s back
- but there’s a rule that says you can’t do this.
- that’s right! and why was that rule put in place?
lol @ lex worrying about people dissing him behind his back as if anyone ever holds their tongue in front of him
- USA where no one lets women vote.
- actually, there’s a rule now that says they can.
- that’s right! and why was that rule put in place?
ah he’s just sniffing at elitist scum.
but 77 has been request invite for a while so no need, dude!
rip ask chaki
were you around for Ask Chaki?
the whole ask chaki/77/dont be a dick thing was just starting when i discovered ilx, i never posted to ask chaki but i read a few of the threads after the giant 1000+ thread where tombot and british mods laid down the new law
sb discussion ... in my sandbox?
i thought 77 only existed to talk about deathdr0ne
ah here now
I do think that curtailing the 77 secret missions was a mod step too far.
That was all me, and it happened after JJJ and LJ had their real names given to the psycho rapey guy, and I’d prob do it again.
No, I think I’m thinking of something that way preceded that incident.
√
I just don’t like when ppl think 77 is like some elite bitch fest. It’s more so ppl can post details about their jobs and stuff without worrying about them getting found.
^^this!
why would people talk about other people on 77 when so many people are on 77? that would be disastrous! i mean, i’m sure it happens sometimes when someone’s just being an ass, but in general that would be a pretty stupid move
yeah at this point it would be pretty much the same as talking about someone on any other board
yeah I just assumed everyone was on 77
I did too until I started noticing ppl occasionally making comments about how they don’t want any part of 77 or something and realized that there are people out there who think it’s a secret club in a sneaky and malicious way which it is definitely not imo.
your average lurker might not be on there but who the hell is talking about them? xp
most of the time I don’t even notice which threads are 77 and which aren’t
fuck lurkers
all you lurkers reading this
fuck you
it’s best they don’t come around unless they want to get sb’d
Also, these people often seem to have intentionally not asked to be invited as if they’re taking some moral stance on the matter said secretiveness which is pretty LOL if you actually know how silly and meaningless most of the stuff on 77 really is.
