y’all, i’ve waded into this wonderful world. wait, did i say wonderful?

hang in there, you’re bound to find someone special!

Todd

probably gonna take down my profile

at some point

maybe

thankig u, todd

def a very cool website, but everyone in the world is an awful person?

for some reason i feel like these sites attract super earnest ppl w/ no or bad senses of humor, but i might just be in a bad mood

Straight women who kiss or fondle each other in clubs in the hopes of attracting men are...

the fuck kinda question is this

...not bothering w/ok cupid!

xp i think that’s mostly true but no harm in giving it a shot anyway. worst case scenario you meet someone and they’re lame and you (probably) never see them again. i have met some cool ppl off it.

love when they ask gay ppl about whether they’re ok with same-sex relationships

they’re super into questions about flag burning

just weeding out the commies nbd

yeah don’t look at it if you’re in a bad mood

i only joined the site cuz i’m in a bad mood, this prob isn’t gonna end well

hmm. i’m decently matched with the guitarist from 4be vig0da

Lotta the q’s are suggested by users, which is jackshit. I skip a heap of them.

Hanging out with me is like riding a roller coaster through a hurricane on a school night. Some people dream in black and white. I dream in awesome. The sound of my voice is the thumping bass that sets the tempo for your wildest fantasies...

the fuck

oh wait lol

...if any of the above description appealed to you, then I may not be your guy.

i think my matches improved after i answered that sarcasm is very important & mandatory to me

wish i dreamt in awesome

I’ve been listening to a lot of dub step.

think this guy is serious, tho

I am sure there are a great many people who are honing their talent for satire on okcupid.

OK Cupid is great. I’ve had some bad dates, but I’ve had some good times through there too. Now in a LTR so don’t need it anymore, but would recommend it if you find the whole dating “thing” a bit daunting. Don’t be put off by user-generated lameness, it’s not all terrible. And not everyone is as adept at creating a likable online persona as people who regularly frequent message-boards.

LTR didn’t come though OKCupid btw, but I’m sure it helps put your head in the right place. There’s nothing like a few good dates to make you feel not-physically-gruesome.

I may have messed up the double negatives there.

not everyone is as adept at creating a likable online persona as people who regularly frequent message-boards.

lol @ this concept ty <3

I meant “not good at crafting online personas” rather than “not good at crafting the persona of a likable guy on a messageboard”. Although that might be true too.

It’s better than match.com

Waiting for date. Am neurotic about being late, so am always on time!

Any queens folks ever been to terrazza 7 in elmhurst/Jackson heights? My whiskey was more $$$ than the places near my work in manhattan!

Did your date ever show up?

He did — it was a pretty bad date though.

Luckily I live 5 min away by walking, so not a huge loss.

could have been worse, i guess

I’m both an investment manager and a philosopher/writer I’m both an investment manager and a philosopher/writer I’m both an investment manager and a philosopher/writer I’m both an investment manager and a philosopher/writer I’m both an investment manager and a philosopher/writer

People don’t grow on trees.

I wouldn’t be seriously involved with a woman if she didn’t like classical music.

omg

According to the internet, you’re 33 or 32, so, at least from my point of view, we’re a good match in terms of age.

ACCORDING TO THE INTERNET

omg. what a letter!

“When a woman plays with her hair, she is preening.”

the guy last night was so put out that i wasn’t interested (when he was the one who postponed our date by 2 hours and then was 20 min late to the newly scheduled time) that he couldn’t even be bothered to say nice to meet you when i left. maybe he was afraid he would lead me on.

“I assume that you find me physically attractive. If you didn’t find me physically attractive, then it would have been irrational for you to go out with me in the first place. After all, our first date was not a blind date. You already knew what I looked like before our date.”

philosophers.

hahaha

this might turn out okay for me, we’ll see

date on friday. we are going to hear wallace shawn read shakespeare. how bad could it be?

don’t you fucking say inconceivable.

well you won’t have to say anything to her, so low risk

naw we doing dinner before.

bump

I guess I can just wait for real-ILX to come back up; wish I’d c&ped that whole thread for the wisdom/advice I assume it contained.

things are still going well with the gal I met on okcupid

girl i met more than a year ago on okc has started runnin w/me again

life is good

Those not entirely satisfied with OKC might consider looking into Hot Tech Startup! HowAboutWe, on which I met without too much difficulty someone very nice and reasonably well-matched (though I have removed myself from the dating pool for someone else). I can’t really compare the two sites’ populations, and note that OKC will probably tell you more about someone upfront, but there may be advantages to a little more mystery and the lighter tone of the pick-a-date focus.

“My insecurities are generally of type XR-81, which is compatible with several common reassurance models”

I met more people IRL from OKCupid (1) than from eHarmony and match.com combined.

my personal life has always been more successful when I avoid those sites altogether!

Guys I have a boyfriend and I met him on OKCupid!!

Yay! :-D

Yay, the official boyfriend word has been bestowed! :-)))

congrats stevie!!

Yay! Now both of you get your cute asses back to DC for a visit :)

me 2

x-post—:D

met a girl through this recently. went for a drink on friday where scrabble, snogging* and handsiness happened. no word from her since.

well done stevie.

*only word for it. apologies if not to ur taste.

okc #1—1 date, went okay, got a “thanks but no thanks” email, returned with a “cool, have a nice life” email

okc #2—1 date, went really nice, meeting for second date tonight, this one has potential legs methinks

okc #3—1 date, spent four hours talking at a patisserie. I had stomach flu. She has kids. Made plans to meet after holidays. We are likely gonna be friends.

okc #4—meeting on friday at a bar

okc #5—making plans over holiday

seeing two other women somewhat more seriously and ongoing on the irl tip; i need to probably not look at okc anymore.

though being told that i am officially hot (and now “eligible to meet hotter people!” by the standards of an impartial computer program was nice. can i assume they do this with everyone?

^also feeling good that this is a two week okc history

good god, forks

yah gj

congrats on y’alls respective bfs btw

godspeed, bruh

wallace shawn date was the “have a good life” chick so i got the one rejection out the way quick luckily

Finding a good match is a totally random act, so the stated premise of okcupid that it can sort out good matches from bad matches is so much shite. But it stands to reason that a wider exposure to random people will increase your odds of finding someone you like who likes you, and obv okcupid can increase your exposure to random people. Voila!

i hate how every other woman in the world complains about how many messages they get on this site, because it makes me feel like i must be a total loser.

Aimless otm. My learning how to project my humor into cyberworld has been the trickiest of exercises the last fourteen years.

one friend “i don’t even have pictures up and still get like 80 messages a day!”

OKC is like a singles bar where it’s always five minutes to closing

there’s a strange mix of interesting and insane

it rewards prep, good writing, thought and careful approach

i think i should totally get a job helping people create their OKC profiles

only if you’re a bigamist

PROTIP: do not answer the questions about anal sex, marriage or if you want to have kids unless you can honestly say no, yes, yes.

Otherwise, it is the equivalent of coming up to a person at a club and saying “Hi, I’m interested in fucking you in the ass but never marrying you. You will die alone. Can I buy you a drink?”

hmm i’ll have to check what i answered to those questions but p. sure that answering in that order would only help my chances.

PROTIP #2: Make a simple “nice to meet you” letter that you can c+p for minimum rejection damage to your soul. Being clever online or answering/quoting info in someone’s profile is creepy and the chances that they’ll remember what you’re referencing is slim. A simple “Hi, I read your profile and I think we’d get along well. Drop me a line if you’d like to talk” should be fine as long as you add a few light human touches so as to not sound spammy. ANYONE would respond to that by looking at your profile. Then if they like what they see they’ll respond. They won’t if they don’t.

i can always spot the form letters and don’t reply to those!!

PROTIP #3: Make sure there’s at least one picture that shows your full body and one shot of your face, smiling. People wanna see that, duh. Don’t post the picture if it doesn’t look like you on a regular day. Otherwise they’re gonna flinch when you meet them.

Well, I usually find a way to allude to an album or a book the other guy mentioned. If I’m responding to his profile, it’s because he’s cute, reads, and listens to music. He should remember what his favorite novel or movie is; most times he’s flattered I went through the trouble of mentioning it!

bene: probably not good form letters i’d guess

i really only reply to people who write me asking a question about something in profile, never the generic ones, or the ones it’s obvious they have just plugged a random interest in “so, i see you like ___eating food__. i also like _eating food__. here is my phone number hope to hear from you!”

i did a lot of specific question asking and clever conversation starters or whatever and got zero response. Then I just said “hi, you look good and you seem neat; let’s talk” and got good response. Go figure.

The semicolon = instant hard-on.

you just forgot protip #1

idk how universally applicable this is

i will totally cop to that being a STRAIGHT MALE PROTIP

coincidentally my fave hardcore band from weehawken is STRAIGHT MALE PROTIP

Generalizations from personal experience always problematic. Forks is merely being more confident/assertive in his second approach, rather than trying to persuade why he fits the bill. What’s going to work better depends on the recipient.

Oh, and not all girls want to have kids or even get married.

in my experience, all girls want to have kids and get married.

ALL OF THEM

no of course not. I’m just saying it’s a bad opening line to say that you’re not into any of those things at all as it broadcasts a degree of unavailability that can put people off

I don’t want to have kids and/or get married.

Congrats Stevie! :)

I disabled my account so as to fully dedicate my attention between an age-appropriate someone who I met in real life and my youthful workplace crush.

having a pet dog someday is the biggest responsibility i aspire to. and even that is many years away!

V_P any update on the work crush situation?

We spent a magical night at the mall and he bought me a book on men’s fashion. Maybe I’ll get lucky at the children’s Christmas party? :)

and the irl older personage?

is it a ‘notable’ author of books who thinks libraries are immoral?

We spent a magical night at the mall and he bought me a book on men’s fashion

the perfect Go-Go’s lyric.

Ahaha, MP, give me some credit:) The elder personage (he’s actually a few months younger than me) is a musician who accompanies me wherever I desire: libraries, rockabilly nights, shopping, you name it.

Decisions, decisions...

MP, I think your late-night ghost text was instrumental in announcing my intentions to the young coworker, so . . . kudos.

second date tonight went v v well

opted not to do the home thing in favor of taking it slow but that’s where we at so

The semicolon = instant hard-on.

^^^^^ also correct use of apostrophes seem to cause instant attraction, but maybe that’s just the kind of girls I message.

also you were late for your next date

you laugh but that’s actually kind of accurate: i was meeting with my ex to pick up my pottery and see her work

i was meeting with my ex to pick up my pottery and see her work

show us some pictures of these broads, forks. i want to see what you’re getting.

“broads”

are u a ’50s gumshoe

i might be a 50’s gumshoe

i will not show you pictures of these “broads” but i will start a pottery thread

broads are ok. it’s the dames you have to watch out for.

^ real talk

ahma wait till we’re realilx for that pottery thread i think

yeah, can’t have that one lost in the sandbox

okay wiseguy: i have about forty finished pieces. I’ve been practicing on the wheel for the past year and am getting a bit better.

i thought you said you answered no to the anal sex question

haaaa

fair zing: that is referred to around the studio as “the bloody asshole vase”

somewhat less asshole related:

Are those fired raku style, forks?

I like that last one

no raku, regular kiln. May try raku some time?

i got loads more of these as i say.

Your stuff looks pretty good to me. What kind of glazes do you use for that effect? Once or twice fired?

Raku can be very fun, though I think techniques vary.

that’s really nice ^^

i told someone ‘ceramicist’ was one of my favourite words once & they said “psoriasis?”, which kinda took the shine off it

thanks. that particular piece is a mix of hamada green and buttermilk and then reduction fired. the accents are done in wax prior to firing.

^^you can’t make fun of the man after this post imo; he’s clearly for real

The heartbreak of ceramicist?

okay, fuck it, i’m gonna sandbox it and take over the okc thread

(just came back from another okc date now btw, went pretty well)

have i never mentioned anywhere on ilx that i’ve been doing wheel pottery since like January? weird. I sometimes forget that I don’t talk about everything i do on this site.

and to take it full circle, I will be giving at least two pieces of pottery to women i met on okc

ugh. trying this again. turns out someone actually messaged me today. his profile says “Black nerds are especially encouraged to apply. :)”. ehhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh.

i’ve also decided to try this again

smh why do i do this to myself

I looked at that Why Don’t We site. It sounds good, but after looking at it, I dunno.

See also: OKC, dating.

Yesterday I was relieved to discover that I did not have an OKC account. One of my phobias is that someone I know will find my profile.

I have one now, but I haven’t filled it out b/c I would have to kill myself if any of my friends, co-workers, or ILX people found it.

Why would you have to kill yourself if anyone you knew found it? OKC is alright, you get to meet cool people, maybe sleep with them, maybe more. Why is this is source of embarrassment again?

more = fisting?

OTOH, if your profile makes it clear that your idea of a better relationship = more fisting, then yeh, you might want to keep your profile on the downlow.

Not embarrassed at having a profile, but I really really don’t want friends reading it!

It would be like having friends listening in on a first date.

on a fist date?

xp Oh yeh, you wouldn’t want your friends reading it, but that’s different from them knowing it exists, surely? And if they do find it, kinda so what? I’ve let friends read my OKC profile before (from when I was single) and it really wasn’t a problem, for them or for me. But yeh, letting it all hang on on a dating profile is a scary experience.

Oh yeh, I don’t care if someone knows it’s there, but I really don’t want them reading it.

Though TBH, I’m sort of here wanting help and support making a profile (I’ve done it a million times before, but I would like input), but I don’t want any of you to actually see it once it’s up.

I sort of wonder if creating a profile with privacy concerns on one’s mind affects the content, and if so, does it make it better, worse, or just different.

Every time I see OKC on this thread I think of Oklahoma City.

deactivated my profile last week RIP

Did you ever use Manhunt? If so, what would you say the differences are?

nah, only other site i used was a4a, which is just totally awful

deactivated my profile last week RIP

Keep it open and check it periodically. You never know.

pretty sure an ilxor just hit me up on this

awwwwwkkkkwarrrrrrrrrrrdddddd

ha

lately i keep finding myself in occupy DC committees with girls i’ve had back-and-forths with on here.

okc #2—spent the night with her on nye; we worked out the particulars for a casual relationship and will be keeping in touch

okc #3—1 friendly email, think we’re gonna be rare communicators... though she made a big show of putting my name in her phone on first date. just think she’s too busy to do anything halfway.

okc #4—turned out that, though we never met, we lived on the same street (two doors down!) when i was with my ex and that led to an amazingly awkward conversation about my old block and the frustrations I have with it and jc in general. did not work well. One drink apiece and a plate of deviled eggs later we went different ways, salute.

okc #5—we are maybe doing yoga together today and then getting dinner. she wrote this morning saying she may have to cancel the yoga portion of our show, some ill-defined personal drama on her end.

okc #6—friendly online chat turned pretty filthy after an hour; we spent a fair amount of time editing and critiquing each others profiles. very meta. she gave me her number but i think i’d rather keep this online for the moment.

okc #7—brunch cancelled, lunch midweek is a go. we apparently work on the same block. this small world shit is creepy.
