sandbox thread for Ken Russell

Mentioned in the obituaries thread, but not a bad idea to give him his own. A friend lent me Fall of the Louse of Usher to watch a while ago but I still haven’t got around to it yet.

quite liked his Kathleen Turner-Tony Perkins wtf comedy-porn-thriller

He was as clueless about sex as D.H. Lawrence.

much love for The Devils, Tommy, Altered States, and especially Lisztomania. RIP you lunatic.

RIP

He was as clueless about sex as D.H. Lawrence

Hardly fair, and Ken was a lot funnier about it.

I’m sad he won’t be around any more and I’m sadder the culture won’t replace him now.

I’ve never seen WiL, since I got 50 pages into the novel a couple years ago aaaaaand that was all.

WIL is a great book but you wouldn’t know it from the movie. Alan Bates was more than solid though.

a great book that’s clueless about sex? does not compute.

But wise about male-male friendship, filial ties, and wrestling.

Valentino one of the better gay panic movies.

RIP

Savage Messiah is stunning, probably one of the best relatively obscure films of the 70s.

I am so sad about this.

Someone posted a bunch of his movies on YouTube. I watched The Devils on Thanksgiving.

didn’t russell hit a critic on TV once?

anyway, RIP! he made some crazy movies. (that’s a compliment.)

Sure, he went against Townshend’s suggestions — casting Elton John instead of Stevie Wonder, and Eric Clapton instead of Charles Mingus — but Tommy was so perfectly and wonderfully batshit. RIP.

casting Elton John instead of Stevie Wonder,

lol @ Stevie Wonder complaining about being beaten by a deaf dumb and blind kid

such a monumentally stupid casting suggestion. Russell = 1, Townsend = 0

xp Was that what happened? I thought Wonder was up for it, but Russell nixed him for some reason.

i just watched tommy a few days ago actually...iirc, elton doesnt play vs tommy, hes more like the emcee in that scene

No, Elton was the reigning champ, hence the crowd booing him/carrying him out at the end.

Russell using “shrill” to refer to a woman.

fine w/ me
