hey what’s up?
hey
great thread.
hey harbl
tra-la
hey estela
sup harbl?
how should a wise attorney pose for his/her website portrait? sitting at the desk leafing through a law book and looking thoughtful? meeting with a client (seated, back facing camera) and looking thoughful? laying a hand on blind lady justice’s shoulder and looking thoughtful?
I appreciate your input!
~unreg

that is very thoughtful, thx
harbl, do you think that wise attorney has got something concealed in her mouth?

harbl, is it snowing where you are?
estela, she always looks like that. it’s funny!
jaq, not yet. but we’re supposed to get 10–20 inches tonight and tomorrow! it’s really messy here.
jergins, i don’t get it
justice isn’t really blind because the mob threatened to bust her knees if she didn’t rule in their favor?
maybe the point is that some fans of lady justice aren’t very good at drawing knees.
harbl r u a lawyer now or whatt
yeah, sorta
hey harbs,
i am trying to compare crime statistics between two census tracts but i’m not sure how to get more exact. a course every census tract is different, and i’m sure the populations of these two are quite different (one’s a residential neighborhood, the other is a mix of industrial and residential), and so i don’t know how to best compare them. are there databases that could break this stuff down better than what i’m using? (city of seattle crime stats, ytd 2007, from here http://www.cityofseattle.net/police/crime/stats/pur170/200712y.htm ). thanks for any help or insight you can give!
hmm. i am not an expert on this but sometimes i like to look at independent sites that track this stuff like spotcrime.com. try http://spotcrime.com/wa/seattle. or maybe there is another site someone has set up for seattle. i don’t think those are more exact, but it helps to look at things marked on a map. they could be even less useful to you, especially over a long period. do you mean you are looking for crime rates (e.g., burglaries per 1000 residents) rather than number of incidents?
hope this helps

jergins how you posted about that islands and the law thing, i got assigned part of this case that is a couple who were living on a boat in a river and had to be rescued because they got iced in and they had a whole family living in squalor on the boat so it was child neglect. it’s my first seafaring case. i thought you’d like that.
ok here: http://www.sendspace.com/file/45n0yt
(it’s just a pdf)
thanks, friend <3

I read an article about this! Unless there’s another family living in squalor on a boat.
it was in my state? case was dropped already :)
harbl do you have birthday plans
not really :/
well
i wish you an early happy one and bashful hugs from kitties and maybe a trip to 47°36′35″n 122°19′59″w
the ATM of the home st bank?

oh thank you mookie. i’ve got a horrible cold and was home from work yesterday. whenever i get a cold (not often) it lasts for 2 weeks of coughing. so i will be contaminating everyone. also how is it i make a lot of money for one person but every paycheck it seems to just disappear? srsly i have like $100 for the next 12 days. i paid my mortgage kind of early, but if i wait to be paid again it will be late. i can’t afford to go to those coordinates for a while! i might have to settle for participating in a courthouse trivia competition for my birthday
i’m making a nice fall meal of chili and roasted pie pumpkins though :)
that sounds very nice, harbl. i wish you a happy day.
happy birthday harbl, though i think i’m maybe a day or even two days late (i just checked your other thread for last year’s one but dates are always confusing because i’m so many hours ahead so the check was a bit futile.)
thank you, my star
Happy belated, harbly!
thanks teh
harbl what do you think baout http://www.nybooks.com/articles/archives/2014/nov/20/why-innocent-people-plead-guilty
schwwww im tired
i read this last week and can’t really remember what it said but it pertained mainly to federal court, while the vast majority of crimes are prosecuted in state court. i only have experience in state courts of one county of one state. however i do agree the penalty for trial is great. it sucks. we have some great cases that have to be pleas because if you get in front of the wrong judge or there is a mandatory minimum or whatever hoo boy. so dependent on the judge. some judges are really terrible.
ty
i read that article
while i read it i thought it was written by the husband of the ‘tiger mother’ author who is an academic lawyer but then i realised i had got jed r(akoff) and jed r(ubenfeld) confused
i thought his suggestions were reasonable anyway, without knowing anything more about the subject matter
what proprortion of federal trials are drug trade related?
@naxuu
the flipside of legalization: now establishment white men will make billions doing exactly what countless black ppls’ lives were ruined over
how do we get you on the supreme court
possibly there are other intermediate steps we might look into
i do not want to be a judge! maybe an administrative judge would be ok
you be the judge but only if you want to
