it’s difficult to travel between island groups. you’d think there’d be ships but they are either infrequent (and weather-dependent) or cargo-only. and you’d think there’d be lots of flights betweeen islands. only there’s not. lack of demand? mixed with poor locals? not much trade (they all sell the same things?) crossed with not much inter-island immigration, i bet. that i was able to getfrom fiji to vanuatu is rare. i heard a bunch of stories of travelers wanting to go from fiji to the cooks or from tahiti to fiji or a bunch of other combinations. in almost every case people hadto fly through auckalnd (and in one case sydney). out of the way, expensive.

all over fiji i looked for a yacht to get on. nothing. then i got to vanuatu and saw three yachts recruiting crews, going on to new caledonia and new zealand. but my plans had already been made.

i would love to go back to fiji and also hit up the cook islands and maybe tuvalu and kiribati. want to see all the south pacific.

i never commented or anything but it was the best thing in my google reader for a few weeks
