sorry for run-on thread title, but basically, I don’t watch a lot of movies on dvd, so some *important* films from a while ago—thinking about DEAD RINGERS and NAKED. I always wonder if i’ll be disappointed when I see them again, i almost prefer to remember them as they affected me, not as they “are”
anyone else feel this way?
like those 2 films i mentioned—will the misanthropy/misogyny so casually portrayed annoy me now that i’m middle-aged and have less patience for that kind of worldview, even if the films aren’t advocating that kind of thinking.
This is different from the movies you loved as a kid and see 20 years later and laugh your ass off at how silly they are (OMEGA MAN for me). More like the movies that made a big impact on you as a young(ish) adult, but now seem, or you fear they may seem, horribly dated, corny, simplistic etc.....

Actually, I remember really liking Dead Ringers too as a teen, and I’m not sure if I would today. Any stuff that’s praised as “dark” and “disturbing” is less likely to have an big impact on me today.
Then again, even as a teen I didn’t like other Cronenberg films as much Dead Ringers, because Dead Ringers was more coherent and less shocking, which I thought was good.
Suburbia—the Penelope Spheris one with all the non actor punk and goth cute kids in it, I loved that film so much. Saw it in 1987 or 88—have only seen it maybe once since and it felt dated and awkward but still kind of sweet. It left a big dint in my head though, I was only 17 at the time. I cut half my hair off and bleached the shit out of it after watching it.
When I re-watched The Seven Faces of Dr Lao last year I was a bit disappointed.
The opening scene in the Spheeris Suburbia may be the best thing ever, when the wild dogs attack and carry off the baby!
Oh, and then there’s Flea talking about how his parents wrestled him to the ground and he was NOOOOD!
