have you ever noticed this? it’s hilarious. then you think “what’s the point of my meaningless existence”
on the other hand I shouldn’t grumble. my dad knew a man who was paraplegic.
I knew him too, his wife left him for his brother. BEFORE the accident!!
i think i heard a song about this
my dad always told me growing up that he thinks the biggest crime he ever brought committed was bringing me into this meaningless world, cursing me with existence. i think it had a profound impact on my worldview.
he’s probably right.
my dad has a philosophy phd so i trust his opinion!!! its all over my head!!
i do think about this sometimes and sometimes it does get me down

how come you always find cheap ballpoint pens, but you lose your expensive pens!
don’t let it get you down hun
that’s a shame hm, have you ever attempted to conceal these negative feelings under a veneer of happy go lucky observations and clichés.
if not, oh well, swings and roundabouts!
if you saw someone drowning, and it was only 55 minutes after you had eaten, would you have to wait 5 minutes before diving in to save them?
usually i don’t think about it. i’m getting ready to go to the store and trying to figure out what brand of toilet paper is best!!!
often you both die and that is a worse tragedy :-(
we all know who painted the ceiling of the sistine chapel, but who did
the floor?
i like the mountain goats because i can relate to the songs about abusive families, john darnielle is good at that! but then again neko case makes pretty good music too!!!!
dying...not good.
unless it is adolf hitler
I hung out with a bunch of people born in 1985 this weekend and didn’t feel at all depressed by their seeming lack of real cynicism. they were all humanities majors about to graduate from NYU. I was just a drunk old man who hated his job. I should probably have felt MUCH worse than I did, but I didn’t. It was an odd sort of epiphany, that I didn’t get all down about it, that I’ve accepted that I’m about to hit 30 and not had two kids and bought a lovely home and written a screenplay and started my own record label and toured japan as part of a two-man noise unit. I was never going to pull that off anyway. I have mostly what I really want, if I wanted the rest so bad I would have gone and gotten it.
Forget the floor, the walls are covered in fabulous paintings by very well-known artists and nobody even looks at them. (x-p)
at these times we are happy with our lot
The forest behind my house is by a well-known “artist,” too. :)
forildo whenever i get depressed about not being 20 any more all i have to do is be in the same place as a bunch of 20-year-olds and i am cured quicklike
Nothing we can do about it dudes! I listen to this Buddhist CD I bought when I feel this way, about living in the present moment and accepting stuff, it’s good advice.
I’ve accepted that I’m soon gonna be 31 and am still excited about a Transformers film coming out.

September reverses & the equinoxes flip
winter slides into fall
when glimpsed in leaps of nine months or more
the seasons reverse
they spring back & fall forward
they reshuffle when you touch down after long intervals
September reverses & the equinoxes flip
summer becomes spring
the seasons reshuffle
at a span of a year & a half
September reverses and the equinoxes flip
they reshuffle when you touch down after long intervals
September reverses & the equinoxes flip
winter slides into fall
they shuffle because it’s been more than two years
first seeing you in a snowbank
then a sweater
then a swelter
they reshuffle with leaps of some time
or reshuffle with leaps of distance
xpost, whoa! is that a song or just a poem?
i was born in 1985 and i constantly have the feeling that time is running out, i’m getting older, what if it’s too late to do all these things i want to do or feel i should do already because the time for those decisions is past...OLD! OLD!
it would really be nice to hold onto a sense of the ultimate tragedy of life instead of feeling like i’m to blame if i don’t make the most of it. i don’t really think it can be fully satisfying to live only one life for only 70 years. i want another! we should not be resigned to having only ONE meaningless short existence!
what buddhist cd is it, jel?
maria, you’re right! i was born in 1984... it’s too late!
there’s a joke somewhere and it’s on me
Maria, it’s a song called “September Reverses” by Gastr del Sol.
I JUST GOT ID THEFTED WTF
hey maria i’m the same age as you and i’m pretty much always convinced that i’ve boxed myself into some shitty corner due to poor decision making back when i shouldn’t have even been allowed to make decisions that would impact the rest of my life, but i’ve found that gin helps quite a lot.

Someone (Martin Amis?) once savaged a nice nature-essayist by calling him “a trivialist, whose job it is to remind the New Yorker’s mostly urban audience that spring follows winter, and summer follows spring, and so on.” Or something like that, I paraphrase. I think it was unfair, personally — and in any case it’s not nice to beat up on the less talented — but there you go.
