I’ve got that sombrero galaxy as my desktop. It’s awesome. The distances with this kind of thing stagger me. That galaxy is 30 million light years away. A light year is about 6 TRILLION miles. That’s a long, long way, my brain can barely imagine how big 1000 miles is, let alone 6 trillion * 30 million miles.
yeah, see this is the thing with astronomy, the distances *are* staggering.
(This is a common criticism of RTD Who-writing, that he uses these comically large numbers for effect—thing is, when dealing with astronomy, the numbers really are so large you can’t adequately get your head around them.)
I really want to nick those star nurseries for an album cover or something.

My APOD. I actually made this one. I are serious astrophysicist. It’s supposed to be the gas in a galaxy. Note galaxies do not look like this, which is part of the reason my PhD is overrunning. It does look cool though.
